Fallout 2: Missing red Skilldex button

About the black square Skilldex button

Definitely related to "too many files in Pipboy" Even if you store your various items on a blank map (like the DOck of SF), the bug still occur. I thinks (in my not so humble opinions  ) it's not related to "too many items". then again, maybe I'm wrong. Not the first time. In my game I didnt notice any corrupted.

Cure: restart the game (exit to windows then restart). From now on if you dont view the status windows you will be fine

Morals of the story:

1. Curiousity about prewar holodisk is a SIN. You will be punished if you read all the trash things in those disks
2. Read and obey the Guide of Perl. It's good, It's thorough and It's accurate.

I'm a little Mox, short and stout
Tap me for white mana and... take the garbage out
Or something

So called "too many items bug" had never happened to me and I don't know anything (except what I have read somewhere) about it. But the missing skilldex button is something I cant complete the game without. I am completely sure that this happens to me always after reading the holodiscs from MB and then reading them in my PipBoy. Maybe the holodiscs from MB are bugged in this way, or maybe it happens when you have too many downloaded holodiscs in your PipBoy and read them there. I am not sure because the holodiscs from MB are always the last ones (except the ones from Enclave) I read.
There is one simply way how you can handle it. Just don't open your list of quests in your PipBoy or, if you really must, restart the game immediately after that. I tried this several times and it really works.

PipBoy Entries

As far as from what I can tell, I only get the missing skilldex button bug when I read too many holodisks.
I don't see how it could be from too many items since I've horded tons more crap then I have now (besides the fact that I've emptied out half a maps worth of items into the wastes and came back to the same map only to have it happen immediately after reading a new holodisk).

Now that I said that, is there any possible way to "remove" holodisk entries from the PipBoy? or am i simply condemned to never upload a holodisk entry to the PipBoy again? :(

It really has nothing to do with your holodisk entries. You can read as many as you want.

It actually does, you can only have a certain amount of entries in the pipboy status screen ( locations + holodisks).
21 entries for Fallout 2 us 1.0
22 entries for Fallout 2 patch 1.2
Any more then that will mess up the skilldex button.

If you suffer from the black box bug and want to get rid of it. Use DAT Explorer to open Master.dat, grab holodisk.txt from the data folder in there and put it in your fallout folder\data\data. Open it up in notepad and remove as many holodisks you need to get under the limit, then save. Restart the game.

And don't forget to delete that file once your done with the game.

cheers
