Fallout 2: Saving Arroyo or doing all quests? Or both?

First time out of the vault
Great forum, great game :D

I've decided to play F2 again after a long time, and now I don't remember exactly how the end works. I remember the first time I played I walked around every city, doing everthing I could to get more money and in the end, I think that when I finally arrived to Arroyo, it was too late and all the villagers had died... it was so long ago lol. Did I dream this?

Now I am only doing some quests, only got Sulik, Vic and Cassidy and I am even skipping some cities. I finally got the GECK and when I returned to Arroyo I've found out they have been kidnapped and so I have to go to San Francisco, etc., etc.

Now I feel that I should be some levels higher... but then I would have been wasting a lot of time. What a dilemma! :D
So, my question is, is it possible to do a lot of quests, and go to every city? Or do I have limited time to end the game?

I am not sure about it, but seems the best way to keep Arroyo running is to NOT look for the GECK.

You realize you are asking for spoilers right?
The villagers get attacked and abducted. It's part of the story. You did not fail. You just got a new objective now, and it's not possible to find the Geck "in time"

I just found out yesterday on the internet the complete Fallout 2 map. Obviously, I didn't play Fallout 2 when it came out long enough...
It's a huge map. I've read some threads in this forum, I don't know if I got this right, is it possible to continue playing and gain experience after ending the game? If not, it's kind of impossible to go to every city in 13 years like King_Rocket said, right? (sometimes I feel like I'm playing this game for the first time...)

In Fo1&Fo2 I am someone who like to take his time, and do all quest, talk to every npc, steal every item available, and i never spent 13 years ingame. I didn't even know there was a time limit before reading it somewhere.

If you fear that you may lose some time travelling, get the highwayman as soon as possible, and travel won't pose any issue.

PS: The 13 years is not related to finishing the main quest. It seems an engine issue, that you can't have an infinite number of days in the Fo Calendar. I bet there is also a limit in every other Fallout. Some mods may extend it if needed. But i don't think it would be needed except if you intend to reach the maximum character level. But even for that, i think you have time. (when you done everything, better restart and play an other way as good/bad guy, smart/idiot, charismatic/ugly, male/female, Good/bad, in bed etc...)

Far, far from it! Far from it! :D
With the Restoration Project installed (which adds even more locations) I will still explore every single place in the game, calmly, thoroughly, in some 2-3 in-game years. The 13 year limit is so that you can REALLY drag it out if you want to, such as driving around the wasteland in big circles, and just... waste time like a pro :D
I've encountered the time-limit ending only once ever, and that took some heroic time-wasting

Lol thank you guys for your answers... New Reno was making me anxious. So much to do!
I'm going to play calmly and be nice and talk to everyone :D
