Fallout 3 at E3 - IGN impressions

IGN said:
In all, Fallout 3 looks to be a great if somewhat modernized take on the franchise that's sure to please those who are new to the franchise as well as those old timers who don't mind the shift in perspective.
Shift in the perspective? WT fucking F?!? They shifted the whole game and its unique world, something that has been valued for all these years, the hard work and the exceptional innovations of the original designers...

Just to rape it and sell it to those who are new to the franchise as well as those old timers who don't mind the shift in perspective. The color of the money combined with the hilarious journalism.

Overruled.

To begin with, we learned a bit more about the Tunnel Snakes, the gang of bullies who inhabit the Vault, and the object of their attention, the young girl with whom you've had a lifelong friendship.

All the apologism about "that doesn't sound like a love-plot" asides (I don't care if it is or not), that has got to be some of the most spectacularly bad plot-writing I've seen since, well, since details of the Father plot started emerging. If these are examples of Bethesda's plot-writing abilities, then hand me a shovel grandma because this possum is dead 'n buried.

Honestly, a bunch of bullies want your high-school sweetheart? That's roughly the level of plot-writing of either a Sunday morning cartoon your kids watch or perhaps of a 50s/60s triple-B feature like Daddy-O or High School Bigshot. For a game like Fallout, it's a joke, at best.

We won't spoil the details of the story, but the connections definitely add some weight to the story.

..unfounded mumbling regarding railroading in a supposed RPG...

Details of THE story?!?!?
So I guess that they have every action that we can do in the game, under their thumb to insure that their precious ONE story comes thru as planned.

Does that sound like being immersed in a realistic sandbox style game, or having your arm twisted into following their predetermined plot all the way through the game without deviation?

does this also mean btw that you cant play a female in FO3?

either way, it's stupid. in FO you could be straight male/female, homosexual male/female or even bi...

It is rather worrying that they've stated this person to be a girl. If she is intended to be a love interest they're essentially saying "You shall be able to role play and it will be immersive, provided you role play a man and are immersed in the woman we tell you to. Or be a lesbian, because that's cool and will sell to 14 year olds"

No more pyromaniac gay men!

Quality writing was the only resort back in those early days of gaming, when RPGs were stuck on PCs. With the technical limitations of the time, developers were forced to flesh out the game-world in prose and plot. Now, with ultra-immersive first-person perspective in a detailed game world, those writing elements are purely superfluous, and can be discarded. Why spend the money on a person or two who can actually write quality material, when you could easily hire more artists to make the visuals even more impressive, or producers to manage them?

The logical thing to do if they simply must do this (which is debatable in itself) is give the player a choice on whether their friend is male or female, just as they pick their own gender.
The whole "growing up in the Vault" thing would fit perfectly with that.

But that's why Bethesda won't do it. Because it would be logical.

I still vote that blowing up Megaton is the worst plot element so far. Funny that nearly every bit of evidence they do give us in regard to story/setting really is negative. Showing almost exclusively mediocre plot devices is sure to allay the fears of a fan.

Picking one or the other would still be boring. Your love interest can't be a nerdy wimp, although disempowered female stereotypes are A OK. Again, some thought and writing would be involved so I think not.

Divine Divinity and BG: Tales of the Sword Coast both have pseudo-romances where the other party switches genders to be the opposite of yours. The DD one is so badly written it has to be intentional, but you get xp if you go through with it to the end.

Heh.. They've been showing off Megaton as an example of "choice and consequence" forever. And they've hardly said anything similar about the main quest.
Now, Megaton is basically a side-quest.. and all we hear of the main quest is that you're after your father.. who you love and adore. And now you have a friend. Who you love and adore.
And the plot will revolve around them.

Hello, intrusive and linear main quest!
After all, it's imershun damnit! You'll love and protect who Todd tells you to love and protect and thus be immersed.

Is she a daughter of Bhaal too?

I bet good money on her being the daughter of the Overseer, and the bully boys tell you to stay away from the Overseer's daughter.. or else!
But you see her anyway, because that's what bully-defying schoolboy heroes do!

Assuming you're railroaded into being a man.. which is looking worryingly likely.

To be fair, that is possible that Megaton is all that they have in the demo version they have been showing around. Every preview/impression so far has been from the same demo version, the only difference has been what the Bethesda developers in attendance have revealed about the game during each play-through.

I guess they've decided against letting us play a truly evil character who would probably say:
"Fuck this bitch and fuck that stupid dad of mine for leaving. I'm out of this hellhole."
and then leave the vault for a life of slaving, gratuitous sex and dug abuse in the wastes...

so much for moral choices..

True, but if there was any variety or freedom intended in the main quest, they'd say something like "of course, you can just forget all about your dad" or "you can shoot your dad in the face and work for the Overseer" or *something*

No, because it goes against 'who wouldn't want Liam Neeson as their dad?'

Both of the original Fallouts had you setting out on a quest to save your family/friends/people you probably didn't give a damn about etc... as well. While it's more than likely they'll follow the Oblivion method of having the killer assassin save the world from the forces of evil there may still be some hope there.

I was wondering, along with the unkillable children and the father figure that you obviously can't whack, why do we need yet another plot fixture that we can't sidestep and or violently murder in case we feel like being evil that day?

Fallout 3 dialogue:

Dad: here's a book, son, "You're Special!", learn from it.
} Ok
} I'd never do anything evil that you'd disapprove of, dad
} I love you, Qui-Gon
} You're the best dad ever!
} Rumors

Truly immersive Fallout-esque branching dialogue! Choices! Consequences! He'll like you slightly less if you call him Qui-Gon!

Both of Fallout's plots were non-involving McGuffin plots in which you'd save thousands of people, vs. one person being your whole motivation.

Do you understand the difference between an over-arching uninvolving McGuffin plot and the way Bethesda is presenting the Father plotline?

He'll probably be the bad boss at the end, so there's your chance...

This looks like a bad high school movie - a father figure, a love interest, and bullies. All it lacks are stupid sex jokes and it will be complete.
