Ausir sent us some info extracted from a cover-page article on Fallout 3 from the Polish play magazine. Some bits are new:
* Same pics as in other magazines lately
* This cover
* Summary of the BoS article
* Super mutants kidnap local people and found a way to turn them into mutants
* You'll be able to issue commands to Dogmeat, e.g. tell him to bring you some items like ammo
* They use "active pause" instead of "VATS"
* The main statistic of weapons will be DPS or Damage Per Second. E.g. a shotgun has 20-40 DPS
* There will be addictions and diseases
* The world will have no invisible walls or other artificial barriers, instead of using the main entrance, you'll be able to climb over a wall or use another alternative way in
* The developers are considering making the player able to complete the game without killing anyone, using only dialogues, sneaking and hacking
* Conclusion: Despite the complaints of orthodox fans, hey're convinced that Fallout 3 is the future of RPG and will be great, but they're worried that while having awesome gameplay and atmosphere, the game will lack black humor
Bethesda sure is economical. Not only do they release only a handful of new screenshots but they actually get multiple magazines to do "exclusives" with the same screenshots. It's like a huge desert with a single oasis.

Yes, that's it. It's not removing the P&P "thing" and many other things, it's black humor, like killing some old woman, placing her head on the table on talking to it.
Hahaha, hilarious.
Except nobody's laughing.

Umm what. I thought DPS was an abstraction people like to use when comparing weapons in MMORPGs. You put some legitimate weapon stats like damage, to hit and speed in and get an average DPS result. It makes no sense to have DPS as an actual weapon stat.

Unless of course you have already abstracted combat all the way to hell.

Nope, DPS it is. That's mentioned in-depth in our NMA preview as well (fixing weapons raising DPS etc.)

DPS is normally a hack 'n slash or MMO stat, games like Diablo and Titan's Quest use it. Should we really be surprised Fallout 3 uses it? Nah.

We levele'd up.

Super mutants kidnap local people and found a way to turn them into mutants

Does this mean, the Super mutants could be the main enemy? So no (more or less) friendly super mutants or something like this?

but even in diablo, you had a stat for how much damage the weapon did with one blow..

you had to multiply the damage per hit by some abstract number that represented the base attack rate (+ whatever attack rate bonuses you had on other items) to get a true DPS stat, which is rather useless anyway.

You'd only ever achieve that DPS if you were standing still and attacking at the maximum rate you were capable of, whilst holding down the attack key ala diablo and diablo 2 and hoping none of those 'hits' were misses.

I'm really dissapointed by this news.

They've managed to take a great system with per hit damage and damage resistance and threshold and turn it into a combat system slightly less intricate than that of an old hack and slash and lootgrab game that was a total clickfest w/ stats.

That is totally pitiful.

REALLY? FUCKING REALLY?

Finally these idijits realized that Fallout can be completed going all-diplo! That's why Fallout is so awesome - Both games can be completed by a cowardly diplomat.

No, it doesn't. Fallout 1 and 2 super mutants weren't exactly an all friendly race and still there was Marcus. It doesn't say anywhere that *all* of the mutants in F3 will be people-jacking SOB's. No need to jump into unnecessary conclusions...

I wouldn't be surprised if Marcus himself showed up.

It's Beth, so let's be crazy, you can count on the Master for a cameo

I've seen it in RTS games lately.

It seems to be a way to break info down to the best representation for reasons of competitive success. In that case in makes perfect sense in a MMORPG where you fight other players or a RTS where your units fight other players units. Such a stat could be really handy for determining just what does how much in so much time.

For example I remember in Warcraft 3 knowing from the unit stats how much damage they did per attack however I didn't realise the speed at which they attacked and once made a huge mistake of building only ballistas. You see they did the most damage of all my troops however their rate of attack was also the slowest and hence they weren't any better at dealing damage than a mixed force except that their long range made them great at buildings and having an all ranged army made me weak to melee.

I'd say this is just a move by Bethesda to make it seem more combat oriented...measuring damage by DPS instead of telling you the damage of an attack and the rate of an attack is simpler and more understandable from the perspective of someone considering actual overall effectiveness.

Surprised to see that in a single player RPG I must say.

Wow...considering that winning through dialogue is something that would make a hack 'n' slash and/or FPS player very unhappy with the game I'd say if they implemented it that would definitely make RPG purists (us) very happy. Of course it only says considering.

Also I would love to see diseases added to the game. They would add significant realism and would also be fitting to the very despairing world that is Fallout.

Sincerely,

So basically, you're stealing the storyline of Fallout 1.

Yes, it will be new, for all of those who have never played Fallout before.

Cholera from drinking foetid toilet water?

(Shitting yourself inside-out is probably worse than obtaining a rad-count high enough to make your cock fall off.)

You remember when they said that Fallout 1 would be the reference point...?

I liked how you could get "Poisoned" after fucking pron stars in New Reno. Of course, there won't be any sex in Fallout 3, because Bethesda said so. ;)

Yeah, well, I'll be touching myself when I play it, and e-mailing them them the pictures to prove it; how will they like them apples?!

(Don't worry: I won't be enjoying myself - I'll be crying as I finger my own arsehole...)
