Fallout 3 screenshots galore

It appears that Bethesda held a press demonstration of Fallout 3 in Taiwan, following which a number of Chinese and/or Taiwanese gaming sites have posted a report. This in itself is not remarkable from what can be gleaned (and I hesitate to quote from a Google translation), but the assortment of accompanying screenshots is. Among many other things you can see dialogue with Mr Burke, a talkative ghoul called Roy Phillips, and a balcony scene following the Megaton explosion. If you don't want spoilers, you should probably steer clear of these. It's been suggested that they violate the NDA a tad, so if you want to, look at them while they're there.

Here's a handful. There's a total of 145 screenshots available at the links below.

To be honest, 'alien' doesn't mean it has to be extraterrestrial.

Hmm... Dialogue isn't great, but it's good to see that there's not a 12-year-old remark for every other choice.
Another friendly ghoul? Good.

This game's still an abomination in my book, but at least they are trying to make the gameplay a little different than Oblivion.

Translation

From underone:

(It's really funny. The chinese direct translation of "Fallout 3" is "Radioactive 3" in underone, and "Dust Particles Survival (or something close) 3" in catchplay)

I'll list out quotes here:

"...limited to Washington DC..."

"...if without any combat, can complete the main quest in 15-20 hours..."

"...but with sidequest, can easily rake up hundreds of hours..."

"...presenter had played more than 80 hours and still have yet finished a fraction of the main quest..."

"...more than 500k words in dialogue..."

"...14k - 15k of voice acted words..."

"...impressive content..."

"...freedom of choice..."

"...different reactions to different dialogue choices..."

"...if act like a jerk, might get attacked by the NPC..."

"...sandbox world..."

"...megaton as an example..."

"...first person, third person or VATS..."

"...attacking different body parts will have different effects..."

"...uses bottlecaps as currency..."

"...accurately follows FO1 and FO2's artistic styles..."

"...better AI than Oblivion..."

"...reacts differently to player's actions..."

"...can choose to interact or blow the NPC's head off..."

"...chinese version will be shipped much later due to time constraints..."

Basically, nothing we don't already know. It's more of a introductory article detailing all the features of the game, without the over-hyped language used by most american game journalists. It's like a murder report - clean, surgical and to the point. Okay, maybe that's a bad example.

But it's nothing much - just a collection of facts we know so far, minus the hype.

hahaha, id say your comparison is pretty sly :D

Was the 'nerd rage' perk known about already? The first I've seen it anyway. I guess 'adrenaline rush' is just too vanilla for them-- they've got to put some of their ass-spice on it.

What is "Crew" in the main menu?

Also, I would be happier if they included some kickass power armor picture in the menu, as in FO1 & 2.

Also, what teh hell? Alien Blaster is in?

Seems like it's a more varied version of the demo Suaside and BN saw.

Also, I didn't figure Mr. Burke was so sly-looking heh
I like

Yeah, now that I've seen him, Mr.Burke seems like exactly the sort of person who would calmly shoot the sheriff in the back and then resume sipping his drink.

Well, I've liked these "screenshots" a lot more than every official screenshot unveiled so far. Why ? Mainly because it seems that even though their game is far from being what I've expected of a Fallout 3, despite the poor graphics, despite the idiotic gameplay modifications, it looks like Fallout 3 has a bit of personnality after all ( something that official screenshots failed to illustrate in my opinion ). That's cool !

Heh, Mr. Burke is quite cool-looking. Lucas Simms looks pretty good, too. Also, we met Allistar Tenpenny. He looks... I dunno, like a 1800 British Gentleman... strange. I can't understand one thing, though: Why he wanted to detonate that nuke? For the mere sake of Fireworks?

Also, if I detonate that nuke in Megaton, I hope almost anyone in Washington DC becomes MIGHTLY PISSED. It's A BOMB. In the small area of DC. Everyone should be getting into their houses due to the Fallout. Many should die, too.

EDIT: DIALOGUE!! LOOK! LOOK! Like MrBrumble said, these screenshots are much better than official screenshots.

Look at the Ghoul. Pretty good. I like how he talks about how people mistake the normal Ghouls and the Ferals... If they develop that, it would be quite interesting.

Wow they really lowered the detail level on the characters....

I remember the first shots of the sheriff actually looked decent, and now he just looks like a toon from Oblivion that they put in wasteland clothes...

Glad to see some variety in these screenshots.. It's about time someone had the balls and the guile to get some captures from the presentations and display them. I think this is going to be a pretty good game. It's going to have it's warts for sure.. I won't deny that, but I have to admit that I have already pre-ordered the collector's edidtion from Amazon..

As for the Alien Blaster.. I am glad they put it in. I think it's more a homage to the original Fallout. I know it might not be "canon", but how many of us didn't run around blasting people with it in Fallout. I hope it has a sutably different death animation than the other energy weapons (though I guess it was the same as the pulse weapons in Fallout 2, right?). Since we have everything else from the first game we might as well include that too.

Or have they seriously cut the detail levels back a ton?

I am thinking different platforms... I think the screen caps are from a XB0X360.

But I would be willing to bet the one you linked to is the PC version. I think they are more memory limited on the XBOX360 for the texture space, so use lower res textures which wash out the detail. I think the geometry looks the same.

I could be totally wrong about the platform thought, because these screen caps are pretty washed out, looks like they were using a projector with too much ambient light so that's going suppress alot of the contrast anyway. Most of what looks better on first screenshot is the addition of contrast. If you lower the contrast on it and lighten it a bit it would look similar I think.

IIRC the alien blaster just made the victim crumble into a pile of soot.

Speaking of - I really hope they modeled the specific plasma rifle deaths; it'd be a shame if they just incinerated you like the laser rifles.
