Fallout 3 will be set on the US east coast, says Desslock

In his Alternate Lives column in a recent issue of PC Gamer, Desslock revelead new information about the upcoming sequel to everyone's favorite RPG. While wandering the gloomy halls of Bethesda headquarters, Desslock "accidentally" stumbled upon a wall covered in Fallout 3 concept art and discovered something interesting:

Judging by some of the landmarks I spied in the design art, Fallout 3 will not be set in Southern California like the first two games. Instead, it'll be set on the east coast of the US...

While many fans hoped to have an opportunity to revisit old locations and meet characters from previous games in Fallout 3, east coast may nonetheless be a sound choice on Bethesda's part, as it decreases potential for canon contradictions that plagued Fallout Tactics and occasionally occured in Fallout 2.

Hey, it's as if they can entirely forget about doing anything that is connected to canon.

It's going to be great to see them work in the dark ironies akin to Fallout 1's, of one remaining element of the world's destruction (nukes) being used to save the world from what was being developed to save the world from other weapons before the Great War (FEV).

I do wonder what they're going to pull from their ass, given the whole post-apocalyptic thing making regions remote, the locality of the FEV and super-mutants, and so much more.

Maybe they'll try zeppelins, too...

Mbwahahaha! Too funny.

That said, eh, this doesn't really change much, although it does relieve them from much of the burden of setting canon (plenty of room for fuck-ups still). I hope they'll be able to get it right.

You know besides the confusion about PipBoy and other stuff even he brings some good points to the discussion table. At least Beth will have to listen to him, they can't diss mainstream carbon mags like they do it with us these days, so at least they might understand the responsability of what they are doing now.

In the end they can still screw everything up, of course, and I'll wait and see his reaction then...

It ain't Fallout unless you can kick a rat in the groin

Heh, and it ain't a Fallout 'sequel' unless Rosh verbally kicks someone attached to the project in the groin.

sadly..

I have a feeling Bethesda is trying to make Fallout 3 more of a sequel to FO1 than FO2. And that's a good thing.

Yeah, Todd and Pete certainly give that feeling every time they open their uh...mouths..

It's not really a sequel if it's entirely seperated from established canon.

Maybe if The Master's Army migrated all the way to the Eastern Seabord there'd be enough to make it a sequel, but otherwise I just don't see how considering how isolated everything is.

Come to think of it. If it's so distant from the locations of the last games (a whole continent distant lawl) why even give it a sequential number? They could call it Fallout: NY, and it'd make it easier for anybody who makes a real Fallout 3 in the year 2078 to pretend that it doesn't exist.

I dunno...if I were a writer on the project, I could come up with a ton of ways to have supermutants and things like that. Afterall, if the game really is taking place just on the east coast, then you have things like the Pentagon, a bunch of military bases, DC, etc. Maybe FEV was being worked on at the Pentagon too? Bethesda has given themselves a very wide berth. They won't be raping things that have already been established. What they create on the east coast can be completely original.

While no doubt I may get flamed for this, I believe it deserves to be actually written, in that while Beth will in all likelihood create something incredibly stupid, holding the game in a different part of the continent would allow them to paint in a different area of the Fallout world and potentially give us a more complete picture of the wasteland and how different areas, with different geographies, demographies- etc reacted to the end of the world.

However, I do expect that they'll paint that part of the picture with an especially broad, but frayed brush.

"Now go out there and visit those fourteen villages filled with savages! Now go into these sectors and fight raiders, now go and fight these Beast Lords, now go fight some Supermutants, and now go fight some Robots! And Initiate... Please ignore the utter lack of believability in the game world and the artificial way that people get stronger the further you move west."

Oh well, here's to hoping.

Damn it. Is it the Dec. 2006 edition :?:

Agree with the 'east-coast' setting. Though I wonder if Harold can make his way there by himself. You know, he's kinda old.. :?

I think that this article not only shows some hope Bethsoft pulling off the game. It also shows hope that the mainstream gamming community isn’t a complete loss.

Having some VERY sound advice being given to Bethsoft from such a high profile, mainstream, gaming magazine can be nothing but beneficial.

I for one believe that this sort of thing is exactly what this community should be standing behind. I intend on righting a letter of kudos to the editor about this article and encourage the rest of you to do the same!

If righting a letter is not your style. Perhaps you might want to start a thread in their forum

I'm curious as to where on the east coast the game will be set.

King of Creation mentioned the Washington, DC area, but that would make no sense, as the nation's capitol would be a high-profile target for an enemy. And really, there are a lot of 'major target' cities on the east coast- New York, Baltimore, Annapolis, DC, etc.

I am going to guess that it will be set either in the far northern states (Maine, etc.) or the more southern states like Georgia and Florida.

Either way, I still expect Bethesda to FUBAR the whole thing with a bunch of "Ooh, SHINY" type of garbage, in an attempt to draw in both the console gamers and the younger gamers who have seen very little in the way of true quality gaming goodness.

Of course this is pessimistic thinking. This way, if FO3 doesn't totally suck I can be pleasantly surprised. If it does suck, I can happily join Rosh as he marches on Bethesda's main office, at the head of an angry mob wielding torches and pitchforks.

"Kill the monster!"
"Destroy that abomination!"
"I like toast!"

Great articel I must say.

But it would be teh grait if you could traverse all the way across America, and it actually took 3 months to get from the east, to the west coast!1

But we shall soon see how this game pans out, no matter who is actually developing it.
