Fallout Antics

Maverick

First time out of the vault
Post funny things you've done or stuff that's happened to you that you find amusing in Fallout.

Here's one:

I was playing Fallout and was deep inside the Cathedral. I was going to set the nuke off. I encountered the two gaurds in front of the door. I was in between them. The one on my left fired and missed. The Super Mutant to my right sort of exploded, and his body fell to the floor. Aparently, the first Super Mutant was so incompetant, he missed me at point blank range WITH A MINIGUN and killed his friend behind me. How the hell that happened still amazes me.

A similar thing happened to me in Fallout 2. I was in the Den, the West side. I decided I didn't like Joey (the gang member in the lower portion of the screen, with two others), and pulled out my pistol and shot him. Unfortunatly, my small-arms skill left some to be desired. I fired the entire clip at him, and only hit him once. Out of ammunition, I proceeded to run towards Beckey's (the bar on the west side). I was persued by Joey and his cohorts. I entered the bar -still in combat mode- and ran towards Becky. Joey managed to enter the bar, he fired his pistol at me. He missed, and it hit one of the armored men in the corner, who then shot at Joey, missed, and hit a villager, who pulled out a knife and charged the bodyguard. The OTHER bodyguard fired, missed and hit another villager. The villager pull some ranged weapon (I don't remember what) and attacked the other bodyguard. In a stunning array of incompetence, he missed and hit one of Joey's men (Who was running towards me). After about ten minutes of this, I escape the bar. A few minutes later, everyone inside it is dead. I looted their corpses and bought me a set of leather armor.

En route to the Cathedral, clad in Hardened Power Armour, I encountered a group of rats among the ruins of LA. Rather than wasting my energy cells on the little creatures, I decided to punch them into oblivion. With a hit chance of 58%, I critically missed and knocked myself out for a few turns. Luckily I survived, and proceeded to try out my Turbo Plasma Rifle on the furry pests. Aiming for the eyes of the furthest one, I critically missed again and dropped my weapon. The shame, oh the shame!

hahha got to love fallouts physics, im sure theres a fallout hell some where jam packed with people who have critically missed hitting a brahman and instead punched a hole through there torso.

In one of my favorite times i've played fallout 2, for some strange reason after me and dogmeat tussled against a group of slavers dogmeat started barking out insults when he would attack someone... from then on in that game I had a bad ass talking dog who would scream out "whos your daddy!" when going for some poor guys genitalia...

got to love crazy ass glitches.. i've never got it to do it in any of my other games, id be interested to know if anyone else has had this happen..[/quote]

ok, them you awaken, because you was slepping and was dreaming with fallout. Great!
uahauahuahu, man, all the city fighting with each other... ahhhh, if fallout could record that to put for download, could be a fun video!

Ooops sorry the english

Once when my brother played Fallout 2 he tried long and hard to kill the guy at the end of Temple of Trials when he initiates the fight. Never succeeded. His other project was to become the boxing champ by killing all the other contestants in the ring. That went through with some effort.

While playing Fallout 1 with a character with LK 1, I had the forture/misfortune of stumbling into one of the more rare random encounters - A patrol of super mutants getting set to square off against a patrol from the Brotherhood of Steel.

Since it was the first time I had seen the encounter, I stayed out of it for the first couple rounds or so. Then I got brave and jumped in. I'd shot two mutants and was shooting at a third, when I hit one of the Paladins by mistake - then I had the mutants and the Brotherhood after my sorry ass.

After that, the encounter didn't last long. One turn later, I was wasteland dust.

The game might not show it, but in real life your character would've probably ducked just in time to avoid the minigun spray.

HOOOWEEE that's some tough shit. Shoulda waited, hopefully the Brotherhood would have won.

That happened to me and I was already on good terms with them.
I looted them and got great stuff!

Man you musta pulled the short straw, how did you get luck of 1?

Oh, man. The problem with this thread is I don't know which experience to choose :D.

I had an incident similar to the first one posted in this thread in Fallout 2 where Marcus had an enemy in between him and me and he managed to waste me and let the enemy escape with nary a wound.

I don't know how "funny" this one is, but in Fallout: Tactics I've found the "invincible Farsight" bug to be quite odd:

For those who haven't played the game, you start with a character called Farsight in your party. I usually leave her in for almost the entire game if not the whole game. In the first mission where you fight super-mutants, there are a bunch in the upper-left corner (where you're not supposed to go for any objectives) that fire depleted uranium .50 cal ammo. This sells for a TON of cash, so I usually try to kill the guys up there before they fire all of their valuable ammo at me :). It's tough, though, because that ammo is ridiculously powerful and will quickly splatter your character if you're not careful. Enter the "invincible Farsight" glitch. For some reason, if you equip Farsight (and this works ONLY with farsight, as far as I can tell) with the only sniper rifle that you can acquire at that point in the game, she becomes basically impossible to hit. Everyone else in your party will get slaughtered in a second if you put them anywhere near those mutants in the corner, but farsight can take her sweet time, snipe away, and never, EVER get hit at all. It's almost funny the way you can have her sitting there not taking any damage, bring your party up near her, then on the next burst of fire from a super-mutant, EVERYONE except Farsight dies. I have yet to figure out exactly why the game does this.

Although I'm sure this has been done a few times by many others, I created a character with both the Bloody Mess and Jinxed traits tagged in Fallout 2.

The comedy of this is astounding.

Wow, jinxed and bloody mess. KABOOM. haha. I have to try that one.

I know this one's fairly common, but I still giggle when someone critically misses with super sledge and knocks themselves out.

Now I know what I'm going to try out next....
(now let's hope sulik doesn't blow up his .223 like last time I had jinxed)

Well, I hate to be the one to bring you this news, but: there is no such thing as the invincible Farsight bug. What you mention is just one of the oddities of the game and it must have 'happened' to practically everyone who ever played FOT. The thing is: if you only have one sniper and you attack, let's say, supermutants with bad eyesight and burstfire, than this burstfire will (practically) never hit your lone sniper! If you attack them spermutants with more than one member of your squad, their uncontrolled burstfire will ALWAYS hit the other squadmember(s)! I know it sounds stupid, but it has been mentioned before. So: a sniper works best when he's alone (or she).

The same thing happens in close combat (CTB), but it is harder to notice. I just think it's due to the poor combat engine.

Basically, the problem w/this is that a poor attack roll will mean that someone other than the intended target is hit. This works in FO/FO2, also, even though the mechanics aren't quite as drastic in the RPGs. The reason that characters other than the one an attacker is actually shooting at are hit is that once it has been determined that a target another target is hit, a target is simply randomly selected and they are hit and that's that. No attack roll is made against them, they simply have the damage applied. It would have been better if the stray fire were resolved against the random target as though it were a normal shot, perhaps w/a slight bonus, at best.

The reason I suspect that Farsight might seem invincible to Lord Frodo, is that a) she is firing, therefore likely to draw the attack, and b) even if the AI has no other reason to choose her as a target she doesn't have the best AG, so other people standing near her will be harder to hit, and the AI will go for the easiest target.

The stray fire mechanics in FoT are indeed brutal, and they can be exploited by a player if multiple targets are present. I've used this trick to all but clear the balcony in Junction City of Reaver snipers and grenadiers w/one or two bursts from a .50 cal., fired at a target which Stein had a 0% chance to hit due to darkness, elevation difference, etc. (I don't like doing this, but in that case my squad was getting torn to pieces and I had to regroup and patch people up twice before I finally stooped to exploiting an imbalance in the mechanics.)

The sad thing about this imbalance is that actually encourages the "lone hero" approach in a squad-based tactical game. Something that I would personally like to have seen avoided.

Cheers,

OTB

Now you're a guy who understands game mechanics, OTB! I was kind of trying to say exactly the same thing, but I couldn't find the right words.

Yup, OTB is familiar with the bug as much as I am. You should have heard the swearing and yelling for the head of whomever wrote such unbelievably stupid combat mechanics, which was when I got the game first. I think that was one of the major things that pissed me off most about the game, because a single-character approach sometimes works better than your team, which is pretty misplaced in an S-BT, especially when it's due to a bug.

Then there's the one about being shot clearly behind cover. One of the hazards of RT mechanics and layering the combat engine to act subservient to the movement engine, which is a bad thing to have as the combat engine should take over nearly everything in combat.

Hmmm. Well, thanks for the info. I never thought of things that way, but it makes sense.

I still like Fallout Tactics, even with all of its flaws. The death animations keep me satisfied to no end.

While we're on the soloing note, I usually use only one character now in F:T. He's got 4 ST, 9 PE, 3 EN, 10 AG, 10 IN, 3 LK, and 8 CH. An odd mix, but as soon as you get him through the first couple missions he's remarkably effective. I tagged small guns, big guns, and energy weapons so he can use 'em all. Basically you can let him stand back and unload on any enemy you encounter without fear of getting hit back (at least, not getting hit back very hard)... so yeah. Thus ends my unrelated tangent.
