"Fallout-Core" films

Let's discuss/list films that are tonally similar with Fallout. Not just post-apocalyptic films in general, but movies that specifically gel well with the tone, aesthetic or themes of Fallout as a series. Off the top of my head:

  • Dr. Strangelove
  • Failsafe
  • A Boy and his Dog
  • Mad Max (All four films)
  • Six-String Samurai
  • For A Few Dollars More
 
I'd actually say that Fury Road doesn't really fit in with Fallout - it's without a doubt the best Mad Max movie, but it represents a heightening of the Road Warrior aesthetic to a level far beyond what's represented in Fallout.

There's a movie called The Afterman which deals with a guy leaving his bunker after the nuclear exchange and having bad adventures in the new world. Maybe?

The Domestics?
The Road?
Molly?

These three might be far too 'Post-Apoc' however.

Road Warrior is the best for me. While Fury Road is the better made action movie, Max took quite a bit of a backseat most of the time, it felt like Furiosa is the actual protagonist.

I can actually agree, and I was literally thinking this as I added Mad Max. Fury Road is too high-octane and "modern" in its presentation I think. It's very 2010s in a way that Fallout isn't. You can picture Toe Cutter, Lord Humungus, Blaster-Master/Barter Town in Fallout, Immortan Joe and the Warboys I can't really.

Ehhhh I would say Eli and the Road are just post-apoc films. I never really got Fallout vibes from either of them.

As potential additions to the list:

  • Damnation Alley (An apparent inspiration for Lonesome Road)
  • The Postman
 
I'd say Eli fits in pretty well - Western vibe, the cobbled together semi-steampunk aesthetic of the town, and that the plot is centered around the rebuilding of society - even featuring an isolated organization dedicated to the preservation of old world knowledge (though it has more in common with the Abbey of Fo2 then the Brotherhood). The only place it really diverges from Fallout is the fact that it's centered upon religion, something which IMO has been unfortunately lacking from the series until Honest Hearts.

I'd agree that the Road doesn't really fit, though it probably is a pretty good description for the first ~25 years after the war.
 
I still think that Todd Howard watched Radioactive Dreams and thought that it was the basis of Fallout.
Colossus - The Forbin Project has some similar aesthetics.

I've never heard of Colossus, just gave it a google and that looks very cool. I'll absolutely check that out.

I think a boy and his dog definetly is one of the biggest influences for fallout. From the name of the dog 'dogmeat' to the underground retro-ish society that clearly inspired the vaults.
 
Just heard of this:

"The Starlost", a SciFi TV show that basically did the whole "Vault Experiment" thing (but IN SPAAACE on a generation ship) back in the 70s, written by Harlan Ellison.

I'm definitely checking this out, I'm a sucker for this style of SciFi.
