Fallout Music

Still Mildly Glowing
I just found something interesting. Forgive me if it has already been said here before. I have been listening to a lot of Aphex Twin lately and I came across a startling discovery. It sounds like the person, Mark Morgan if I am not mistaken, that made the music for Fallout and Fallout 2 took some of Aphex twins music and changed it A LITTLE BIT and added it into the game.

Here are some examples of this:

Interview With Tim Cain said:
What are your favourite bands/artists (music) ?

I like to listen to ambient music most of the time, and my favourites are Brian Eno, Global Communication, Aphex Twin, Mystical Sun, Sephiroth, Boards of Canada, Synaesthesia, Stars of the Lid, and Dilate. I still listen to a lot of non-ambient music like Xymox, Dead Can Dance, VAST, Delerium, Front Line Assembly, BIS, and Depeche Mode. I also seem to have an unusual appreciation for Princess Superstar.

Interview With Tim Cain said:
Pop Culture played a big role in Fallout, what pop culture influences you?

Music is a big influence to me, leading me to pick the ambient music that Mark Morgan based his Fallout music upon. I don’t watch modern movies very much, but I know they were a big influence on other members of the team, especially the artists.

With that said, here are some comparisons between Aphex Twins songs and the songs in Fallout:

Listen to the song "Windowsill" by Aphex Twin and compare it to the "World Map" song in Fallout. They are VERY alike, almost exactly the same.

Other songs by Aphex Twin to listen to and compare are:

"Grey Stripe" Compare this song to the "Desert" song.
"Grass" Compare this song to the song played after you beat Fallout 2 and the credits are being displayed. The two songs are almost EXACTLY the same.
"Spots"
1.----------------------
"Tessels" Compare this song to the song "City of the Dead" (the song that plays while you are in Necropolis). Take out the repetitive background noise that plays constantly in the Aphex Twin song and compare the horn like noise that plays periodically. This song can also be found on the Aphex Twin album titled "Selected Ambient Works Volume II".
2.-----------------------
The intro song in the movie "The Stand" by Steven King sounds almost exactly like the song played in Redding. Thanks to Transfixion for this find.

While these might not sound nearly as close as "Windowsill" is to the "World Map" song I find these to be pretty close. Also, this is a incomplete list. Now before you go off and say something like "Duh, of course they sound alike." I know. I just think it is really cool.

Thanks!

Sure, I have about 27 of their albums, give or take a few, maybe I will search through all of them tonight if I have time. Did you compare the songs? All of the songs mentioned above are on just one of Aphex Twins albums titled "Selected Ambient Works Volume II". That album consists of two discs.

Edit: I updated the list.

Note: After every update I will separate the updated items with a line along with a number to state what update it is.

Edit 2: Updated the list stating my finding that the Aphex Twin song "Grass" that was previously on the list is almost EXACTLY the same song that plays when the Fallout 2 credits are being displayed after you beat the game.

Heh, the other way around, I know about a song with samples from Fallout 2. :)

Cant remember the name of it right now, though. My brother heard it first, he was quite excited, like "Hey, isnt that from Fallout 2? WTF?!", and I just pinpointed the samples after hearing it a few times.

The samples were of Hakunin saying something, and of Sulik saying "no way we be friends with childkiller" (cut down to just "we be friends with childkiller"). But samples were modified (different pitch, etc) but still audible.

Nice to know that musicans play Fallout too :P

Please show me. The songs that I mentioned above WERE taken from Aphex Twin's album titled "Selected Ambient Works Volume II" because the album was made in 1994, before Fallout came out if I am not mistaken.

Did you compare the songs?
I have absolutely no idea who the band is in the first place, and I'll probably never find out or recognize the music in the first place, but I think its good that you would actually find something like that.

Thats quite the find...it's gotta be more than a coincidence.

Great job!

Thank you, I agree. I think Tim Cain told Mark Morgan just to edit some of Aphex Twin's music and put it in the game. I would say it is a shame but Aphex Twin's music is just so good.

Id like to hear the song from the vault city and new reno. That music sucks u into that Fallout atmosphere.

I really liked the music in New Reno. It had good music but the main thing was the ambiance. The laughing and casino noises were a nice touch. That is one thing the Fallout series had that I do not think I have ever seen in any other game, unmatched and awesome ambient music and sounds.

Thats true. There are not many games with a unique atmosphere like in Fallout, and music and sounds are a big part of it, I can almost say that they create it. In fact, the only other game I ever liked for this and like this was Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 on Sega back when they came out. Although there were not many unique sounds in Vault City, the music totally worked there. That's what's cool about Fallout 2, every place had different but equally cool atmosphere.

I think the closest I've ever come to seeing a game with equal ambiance in the music and sounds would be Divine Divinity. :) That's the nice thing about RPGs, I feel the developers are much more aware of the fact that the "feel" of the game can be every bit as important as the gameplay or the graphics or the plot. In many genres, that realization (or need) simply doesn't exist.

I must say that the best Fallout music was the track from the Brotherhood in the original game, the sounds of the air raid sirens and drums made the hairs on my arms stand on end. You could close your eyes and just imagine the sirens going off and the panic that ensued when the vaults finally closed. That made that track the best imo.

The second one is the track from the Vault. With the typing and propaganda statements in the background you just get the feeling you are locked in a vault with the powers that be constantly bombarding you with subliminal propaganda. :D

Also noticed that Morgan ripped a tune from the intro song for the mini series "The Stand."

WOW! The Stand is one of my favorite movies so that makes this an AWESOME find! I had suspected that they at least sounded alike but did not know it was that close as I had never compared them one after the other like that. Thank you very much for sharing that with us and providing the files for us to listen to. It seems as though you are right.

Edit: Updated the list with Transfixion's find.

This is interesting - I've played Fallout a lot and listened to SAWII a lot and never made the connection, except thinking that the Fallout music could have been released as a SAW-like album. Few comments:

Some of the loans are more obvious, for instance "windowsill" where Morgan obviously nicked part of the comp (I got a little confused at first since there are two tunes that have been named "windowsill" at one point or another. Note to non-Aphex listeners: the songs on this album don't have names, so fans have made up various notations for them). That's sort of the "done thing" though in the music world, as long as you don't rip off the melody and all. The Necropolis music has a very similar structure to the SAW track but I think the feel is pretty distinct anyway. Tunes that are almost pure wind noise or synth sweeps are obviously going to sound similar. :)

Did anyone else notice the 23world song in Fallout 2? It doesn't seem to have been used.

Could the music played after Fallout 2 be 13carvrn from Fallout? I don't have the Fallout 2 cd at hand, but that song does sound very much like something out of SAWII.

The Stand is possibly the most brainless mini-series of all time. :)

A question about the music in Fallout 1 and 2

I was wondering if anyone has noticed similarities between Ry Cooder's music for Wim Wender's film, "Paris,Texas," and the music used as ambient sound in the Fallout 1 and 2 games?

The movie takes place in Texas, so many of the scenes are shot with desert landscapes with rusted out automobiles as props (just like Fallout). On Amazon you can hear some samples. But watch the movie or get the full soundtrack to see exactly what I mean.

On Amazon listen to the sample of the song entitled “On The Couch” and go to 19 seconds when you do. That’s a good Fallout moment right there.

Here's the page with the samples from the album:

You could have searched this little forum for a word like "music" and posted in one of the threads that is dedicated to this topic.

Merged.

You're right of course, but...

Would anyone have even noticed it among all the other discussions happening?

Oh and J.J., you're absolutely right, but that's just one example. If you actually listen to the whole soundtrack you'll notice that there are even more songs that sound A LOT like the stuff in Fallout.
