J.E. Sawyer adds a short entry to the New Vegas dev diaries, on NavMeshes.
I enjoy talking about our work and I have the good fortune to be able to do so to the press and fans, but I worry that it obfuscates the immense volume of human time, headaches, frustration, and creative passion that goes into making something of this scale. This is not the result of one person's ideas, the fruit of one person's labor. And though the press and fans have emphasized the connection between the Obsidian of today and Black Isle of days gone by, I believe it diminishes the role of both Bethesda, in developing Fallout 3, and the myriad developers at Obsidian who are coming to Fallout for the first time. Without their creativity and drive, this game could never have been made.

Trust me, they are doing a fine job themselves.
Honestly, Bethesda did barely anything for Fallout in general or its fans, we could have lived without the idea that they would bring the series back into production.

Yeah, someone else might have picked it up. That could have been for better or for worse, however.

this is also ignoring the fact that myself and many others wouldn't be looking as forward to this game if it was Bethesda's Fallout 4.

the ONLY reason some of us even perked up our ears with a "R-really?" was because of WHO picked it up. the existing bits courtesy of Bethesda are the shit taste in our mouths which we're hoping Obsidian can cover up with flavor. we still know we're eating shit to a certain extent though.

Fallout POS could have become the main series gameplay.

Good one. I played the board-game house on the hill, and I have to say it could do with a bit of balancing.

For some reason the associated text for the Benny image on the blog reads "Mr. House".

Sloppy formatting on a rushed piece. Bethesda's PR in general ramping up to release has seemed a bit rushed.

If rush was taking care of the pr everyone and there drunk uncle would be running out to buy this game.

I accept that you are allowed your opinion, and agree with you, I would personally like it if they could bring back the blues brothers to do the PR for NV QQ

The mere fact that Sawyer and Avellone got another crack at the series has to be a good consequence of Beth buying the licence. It could've been far far worse...like a whole series of BoS' type of game, or a Popcap interpretation, or a Facebook game, or...

Plus, with the series coming back into production it's introduced many people - like me - to the originals, and surely more people getting into it and loving it has to be a good thing.

If only it were Tim and Boyarsky getting another crack at the series instead :(

Indeed. Whatever happened there when those two left, by the way? All I've ever read is that Interplay were changing up their management during production of FO2, Tim Cain was programming, and then next thing you know there was an exodus of many of the founding members. Was it ever made public what happened there? Was it because of the tight schedule they had to make FO2 after FO1? Creative differences?

From the wikipedia article on Troika
In 1997 Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky and Jason D. Anderson were working on the Fallout sequel at Interplay. Finishing the initial design for Fallout 2, they were unable to come to an agreement with Interplay about the future team structure. They decide to leave Interplay to form a company that felt more like the old Interplay, producing computer role-playing games for PC in 1997.
So basically Interplay wasn't letting them do things their way so they up and left. On the one hand I get the feeling that things regarding the Fallout franchise would have probably been better if they had stayed and put up with Interplay's bullshit, but on the other hand Arcanum would never have existed if they had stayed.

Yeah, that's a tricky one... what would have happened if they stayed? Who would Van Buren have changed? Would it have been released?

I like to think Bethsoft never would have gotten their greasy hands on Fallout and ruin it.

It wouldn't. There would be differences in the games maybe. But Interplay would have gone into ruin anyway. I don't see how these two could have changed that or influenced it.
