Fallout: New Vegas previews

Scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit as some sites I never heard of get their hands on Fallout: New Vegas and play the same demo as everyone else did. I4U.
Fallout III: New Vegas is just more of the same. Thankfully, “the same” is pretty damn incredible. New Vegas is a glowing neon wonderland of casinos, strippers, giant buildings and battered statues. It falls under the purview of the New California Republic, the first organized government we've encountered in Fallout that isn't outright evil.
PSXExtreme.
Yes, it’s quite the environment, and fans of Fallout 3 should feel right at home in the post-apocalyptic atmosphere. But this time around, that atmosphere has a definite attitude; a flash and panache most decidedly lacking in the previous series entry. And although Obsidian’s last effort (Alpha Protocol) turned out badly, we have faith that Bethesda isn’t about to release a sub-par Fallout and besides, the upgrades and enhancements are intriguing. Remember the melee combat mechanic in Fallout 3? Wasn’t much to it, was there? Well, maybe that’s why the’re implementing a special melee attack in New Vegas; every weapon has at least one such attack, and this infuses more strategy into up-close-and-personal combat. For instance, if you check the screenshots, you’ll see a golf club and what appear to be futuristic boxing gloves; with the former, there’s a “Fore” option and with the latter, there’s an effective spike gauntlet. Oh…the pain.
Gaming Excellence.
Wanted a larger variety of weapons? Well now you have grenade launchers, the plasma rifle from the first two games and even a heavy machine gun. Thought that the aiming felt a bit too loose? That's what the updated iron sights are for. Now when you aim with the gun you look straight down the top of the gun, trying to take your shots while dealing with the wavering of the gun. They've even added more enemies; some that will be familiar to those who played the previous games (damn those geckos!).
Icrontic.
The two main differences that I saw in the game from Fallout 3 was the control you have over your companions and new melee moves depending on your melee skill. If you have a high enough melee skill you can do customized moves in VATS based on the weapon. The one that they mentioned was a move called Fore! using the golf club— you basically line up like a normal golf shot and swing your club at them. If it hits it pops the enemy into the air and they fall down on the ground and are stunned for a short time.

The E3 preview blitz. It's a shame there's not more depth to these, but I guess you can't really expect that from an event like this. If everyone's playing (or seeing) the same bits of gameplay you can only retell it so many ways.

IGN's video is up, by the way.

And although Obsidian’s last effort (Alpha Protocol) turned out badly

This sounds as if Fallout 3 was better than Alpha Protocol... (Which it was absolutly not, in my opinion. Hurr durr.)

So what's to stop me from going into the casino and just looting it? 'Cause Fallout's all about; heavily amoured guards and having a lot of weapons. What's gonna stop me from just blowing the hell out of every casino?
True definition of what the Fallout series is about right here.

Also, that bug(?) with them not getting the weapons back must have been pretty embarrassing. :)

Alpha Protocol is a very good game... for these times at least. Don't know how it's "turned out badly", it was much much more than I expected it to be.
And Bethesda already released a sub-par Fallout... I'd rather play Tactics 10 more times than play FO3 again.

What kind of an idiot you need be to read and trust in these reviews? Cause we know who writes these.... orangutans on crack.

Fallout III: New Vegas?! ...

Yes, Alpha Protocol was pretty damn good. I played it a lot, with a few playthroughs. Plus most of those bugs could be fixed by messing with the .ini file. And I was never a fan of Fallout 3 or how, IMHO, raped the canon of the game.

It is, but it's also clunky. Bethesda may be allowed to get away with that, but Obsidian isn't.

A lot of journalists refer to it as that, not completely sure why. It's like how they rarely refer to Oblivion as The Elder Scrolls IV, and some even already refer to The Elder Scrolls V as Oblivion II. Bad long-term memory, I guess.

Ughh, way too much previews. Are you people working on some kind of round-up on the important stuff? Maybe at The Vault?

Having to see previews which repeat the same stuff over and over again, only to hunt for something new... That's definitely the job of the NMA news team. ;)

EDIT: I mean, like this article, but rounding up the videos too, if they have something useful of course.

So long as people are being super objective about journalist credibility and Alpha Protocol, I'd like to point out that Fallout 3 was far more optimized for PC than AP was. The PipBoy wasn't ideal, but navigating AP's menus is painful.

Navigation in Fallout 3's menus was and is a pain as well. Except of F1, F2 and F3 buttons, there have been not other shortcut for any of the menus. Compare to AP: There we can have shortcuts for every menu.

Also in Fallout 3 you couldn't change a lot of the shortcuts. And we got funny stuff like "press R long enough to put away the weapon", which was totally unimaginative... same with activating pipboy light, etc. I needed a while to find out about this stuff, as it wasn't written down anywhere, if I remember correct.

Opinions are the product of the intellect. The higher the intellect, the better the opinion.
If you have a medical problem, you could have 10 guys off the street tell you their opinion about it. But chances are all 10 are crap. Even after you see a doctor, if it's not a very good one, you could still have the wrong "opinion". And you could probably be convinced that he's not wrong til much later... so yeah... let's increase the dosage a bit.

Anyway, those guys can have their opinion all they want, but it does not make it any good. Usually, they're just some guys who took someone else's crap as fact because they were either incapable/lazy to come up with thoughts of their own, or too afraid to go against the grain, and kept repeating that bullcrap until it became "the truth". Then they made some "Top 100 best crap of [insert month, year, of all time, ever]" lists to give their own claims more basis and there's your foundation for mass imbecility...

Just my opinion :D
