Fallout Online

First time out of the vault
After carefull condiseration ive decided to make a 32bit MMORPG fallout. It will have all of the same tiles/sprites etc because i want to keep everything as close to fallout as possible, i dont think i have to explain the story here because... this is a fallout fourm and anyone who dosent already know shouldent be here. The game will use the Konfuze mmorpg engine, ive just got to finish converting and skewing/prospectiveing the tiles for use with konfuze and i can start work on the actuall game.

Main Menu guis:

the text "aftermath" is temporary untill i convert the fallout fonts.

You can download the Fallout font from the files section of NMA.

Good luck with the game mate, just be carefull about calling it Fallout Online as Interplay still have the rights to that (other wise known as FOOL)

i thought interplay was out of buisness

It's not, and even if it was, that doesn't make Fallout public domain. The risk that the "real" Fo:Ol will exist seems negligible though.

Be that as it may, a MMORPG is a massive undertaking, or so I understand. If you want anyone to believe you'll actually pull it off (many more well-staffed and less complex projects have fallen by the roadside around here) maybe you should present something other than nondescript menu screens. That's the part that requires no commitment and planning, just playing around. Never mind converting fonts - whip up some placeholders and make a working MMO envinronment with balanced and functioning skill and combat rulesets. Make sure you'll be including enough substance - maps, enemies, incentives, player interaction - to produce a game people will actually play. Have you done any other piece of modding/programming before to make you believe you can do this? Do you have a hidden, dedicated, well-coordinated team of abject slaves who excel in game design?

Also a hint on forum usage: don't triple post, use the edit button.

That being said, you could use the 'pen and paper' version of fallout to get the rules from

Per, i understand what youre saying and its a compleatly valid point, but most of the work has been done for me considering im using an already compleated engine (www.konfuze.com) and as for the slave labor, i have the konfuze community of experienced VB6 programmers to help me with that although very little new programming will actually be needed. It all comes down to my creating new sprites, converting tiles, and possibly a little code tinkering. I do know how to do all of this although i have not actually undertaken anything of this scale to prove that i can do it. Everyone will just have to wait for the beta release and that will be your proof.

www.konfuze.com

Interesting site, every time I clicked on something I was told my security level was too low. Wouldn't want anyone making away with their super secret screenshots, I guess.

In any case, good luck.

lol, you have to regester before you can look at anything, i dont believe they have screenshots though, you would have to downlaod konfuze ME to see how it works

and thanks

If you need a few pointers on converting sprites from Fallout to a differerent formate let me know, I can probably help you out a little bit. I converted all the critters from Fallout Tactics into critters for Fallout 2 :)

Anyway if you want to use existing art from the fallout games, then you will need to decide how many directions you want a person to be able to face.

Fallout 1 & 2 - 6 Orientations on a hex based game board
FOT - 8 Orientations on an Octagon? based game board

Anyway, if you go for a 6 direction system then you may be able to use a resized version of all the critters from FO1, FO2 and FOT

That is all :)

Lookie here! :o
I must admit I'm surprised! Can't wait to see such thing... After two released mods, one unsuccesful MMORPG, and bunch of other projects, I must confirm Per's statements. But I wish you good luck nonetheless.

thanks, and wild qwerty, basically its a 4 direction board, there squares :P but only for the time being, after i get everything stable and going smoothly i plan on doing some work on the engine to make it run well with fallouts style then i will have hexigonal.

I took a look at the engine also... its ok. I hope this mod comes out, im looking forward to it already

This project sounds interesing and may be good if one manages to pull it off. But one question, if a character was to use sneak, would you make them shaded or invisable like so that other players will not be able to see them?

Good luck, if this comes to fruition it could be really incredible.

Also, if you need any Java coding done, hit me up and I'll put my pathetic skills to the test.

interesting project!

Maybe this is to early to ask, but how will combat be handled? Will it be turn based as in the original fallouts or will it be some form of realtime? Also will there be instanced worlds or a big continuous world?

edit: btw, check this out: www.interplay.com

Hmm, a bold move and though from the time I hear Fallout Online, I have this feeling Roshambo will come out from behind some hydrofoil barrel ready to sodomize anyone who mentions Fallout Online with a super cattle prod.

But I like your approach and would be happy to play:D

Well, the PNP games have a nice set of rules and who knows, dreams do come true.

Good luck and may Server be your Guide, Drakey.

hatchen, i havent put any thought to skills as of yet, im just trying to get damage calculation and statistics and derived statistics done right now, but ill prob. make the player invisible to everyother player and a kind of off grey see through to the player.
callehe, i was wondering how i was going to do that myself, but i cant realisticly put turn based combat into an mmo, it would be impratical, everytime someone entered the same map as a player in combat, there combat would have to automatically enter because we wouldent know who was going to attack who when.
"instanced" i dont know what that word is :P i assume its supposed to mean segmented, when you get to the edge of a map it will load the new one, or that means like in fallout where you travel from place to place by a world map, but either way i havent decieded yet, it could go either way, but the world map might be tricky.
And before anyone asks, no, you will not be able to steal from other players :P.

Does anyone on these fourms know any VB6? Ive gotten to the limit of my skills and desperatly need help.

*edit* Ive decided to name the game Fallout:Aftermath aka FOAM :P
and can someone give me a link or something to the rules for that pen and paper game, all i found was a tatical BOS one, unless that was it?
