Fallout Portable

Grin

Still Mildly Glowing
I'm the proud owner of a Sony® PSP, and I've been toying with several emulators, NES, SNES, N64, PS, Sega, and so forth and so forth.

I know of several Computer emulators, and I've been playing with the idea of converting such a emulator to the PSP, in order to play Fallout ON the PSP.

Hence; Fallout Portable.

If anyone has any ideas or contributions to make to these visions and dreams, please do so.

A respond of any kind would be great.

All I can say is that it would be sweet if Fallout and PSP worked together. I got a PSP for christmas and havent used it since. Lacking a proper memorycard still...However for the sake of Fallout I would go and buy a new MemoryStick Pro Duo!

Personally, I think the best way to make Fallout portable is to port it to a DS, if it's possible. I think some guys are working on porting another PC classic, Command and Conquer, onto the DS as well.

Care to elaborate?

I don't see how porting Fallout to a DS has _anything_ to do with the PSP topic. Why would it be easier to port Fallout to DS first? And how would this influence a PSP port. And why couldn't a PSP port be done earlier?

Seriously: I don't get it :-/

I think the DS with the stick makes it easier to play Fallout. But I don't the the DS would be powerfull enough.

I just figured that instead of taking the time to make an emulator for Fallout on the PSP, it would be a wiser choice to use a portable system that functions more closely to a computer, like a DS (touchscreen = mouse). Of course, it would be hard to make it right click. And, I gave an example of a game that is older than Fallout, has a bigger fanbase, and just happens to be getting a homebrew port onto the DS. Just figured it'd be an easier endeavor as well, UMDs are expensive, PSPs have horrible battery life, and the DS has a touchscreen that would make it easier to copy the Fallout Portable design, without needing to create a slapped-together control scheme with the buttons on the PSP.

Edit: And, actually, the DS is able to handle full-3D graphics, I mthink it could take 2D sprites.

So your suggestion is to go buy a DS rather than use the PSP that I already have? Come on man... The first question very clearly states that we are trying to get Fallout running in PSP, so why are you babbling about DS?

The PSP is a powerful device, and if anything, functions the closest like a computer.
Also it is capable of many, many, many applications, and it has also already proven to be genuinely capable of running emulators (PS, NES, SNES, SEGA, ATARI etc.), AND it has a very active and large modding community.

Besides if we are discussing controls, it wouldn’t be hard to use the analog controller for the mouse pointer and the left and right trigger as the corresponding mouse buttons. You also can't use UMD's with homebrew games so that's not really an argument.

Considering all of this and the fact that I own one, made me come up with the before mentioned question.

Also I want to actually port the original games F1&F2 to the PSP. Or at least make them playable with an emulator or virtual Windows/ DOS-like environment.

And I did take a look at this Fallout PPC concept which seems promising, perhaps there is hope. However it wasn’t the original F1&F2 games though, which is a shame considering the fact that they did mention that with the Fallout PPC engine you could port the original F1&F2 games.

If that could be done, AND it could somehow be ported to the PSP my prayers would be answered.

Well, then congrats to the PSP modding community, just throwing my .02 in that I think a DS would be easier to do it for, but since I haven't done any reasearch on the subject, I could be talking out my ass on this one. However, good luck to you in trying to get this to work, if you do. No real offense meant in my argument. :)

No real offense meant in my argument.

None taken.

I'm just trying to make you see that the PSP is better suited for a F1&F2 port.

Some ass came on Gamespot/GameFAQ's and said he had done it and never said another word.

Perhaps he thought it would be humorous. Luckily he did not get that much attention.

But none of this is bringing Fallout Portable any closer. And since I have NO experience with porting/emulating...

IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE?!?!?!?!?!

look at these two links, they will tell yo how to put windows 95 on your psp it's the best place to start.

The psp has a 333MHz CPU 32ram+4mb vid mem

Fallout 1 Minimum System Requirements:
System: Pentium-90 or equivalent
RAM: 16 MB
Video Memory: 1 MB

Windows 95 run on a PC 100MHz Processor 16MB of RAM and a 521KB of grathix

The specks add up.

the slim version of the PSP coming out in in August of 2007 will have 8GB of internal flash memory, that should help with things.

one thing, the psp cpu speed is capped at 222MHz, but theres a app that lets it run the full 333, that would be a plus in all this.

OK, I'll try it out. It certainly sounds promising, thank you.
If I could burn an ISO of F1&F2 and put it on the memory stick. MAYBE, if it would be recognized by Windows 95, I'll be able to "install" F1&F2

And my PSP runs with custom firmware 3.40 OE-A. AND runs at 333MHz.
So I already maximized the customizable aspects of the device.

Thak you for your effort and I'll see what I can find out.

I dont thing a ISO is the way to go, I think it be better and save room (cause you only have 1gb, right?) if you just copyed the who game over to the mem stick along with windows and did a manual installation when you got it running.

Oh and keep us updated with your progress.

You're probably right. More chance of succeeding that way. IF I can get Windows 95 to work.

OK, I WILL try it out as soon as I've finished Ratchet & Clank - Size Matters. I'm just really into that game right now - CURSE my short attention span!!

I’ll keep you updated.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Well, I TRIED.

And FAILED. Miserably I might add.

SOMEHOW, while ignoring all the warnings and dangers on the path to true righteousness, I managed to BRICK my PSP.

That’s right I BRICKED/DESTROYED my PSP while trying to create Fallout Portable, so I guess my research will be postponed for the moment, or, worst case scenario, brought to a complete standstill.

I got Windows 95 to work though, but Windows 95, writes constantly to the flash memory of your PSP. My guess is that THAT is what brought my PSP to stop working.

SO, if anyone wishes to continue this crusade, I recommend NOT to take the Windows 95 path.

At least I sacrificed my PSP for a righteous cause, RIGHT?

Hopefully Fallout 3 will attend to these wounds inflicted and diminish the pain.

I have to say that thinking shit like that is what caused Brian Fargo to reach out from beyond the grave of obscurity and strike your psp down into fucking hell.

You had it coming.

(Note, DS is only $99, chummer. Comon over to Fallout DS and brick away, brick away, brick away.)

Damn, Grin, sorry to hear about your PSP turning into an expensive brick. Did you even get to run the game? (Oh, and why your PSP probably bricked is that Sony and Microsoft hate each other, so you're trying to make two Japanese fighting fish play together in the same tank there)

I"m really sorry to here that man i really am....you say you got windows to run tho? thats something, but running how? and why do you think it got bricked?
