FallOut: Source

Lodle

First time out of the vault
Hey,

I had no idea that there was such a cult following to fallout.

Ok heres the idea. To convert Fallout 2 to the source engine (half life 2 any one?).

Now this is no easy feat and still a pipe dream but i loved fallout 2 so much when first played it and i think it will re spark interest in it.

I have been modding the source engine since Jan this year and im pretty skilled with it. But what i will need is some help in the form of:

* molders to make weapons / items/ characters
* mapers to make towns and so on
* 2d artists to make skins and 2d stuff
* sound crew (for new music and sound effects)

I have many ideas which could see this come to light but it will take alot of work and time.

This weekend ill write up a full detailed plan.

So please post ideas and suggestions.

Some people were going to do a post-apoc RPG in the source engine two years ago, posted some concept art, then quickly faded away and were never heard from again.

Because ;
*i know the source engine
*i can make it do what i want
*all ways been improved on
*has a wide comunity support base
*can do every thing i want out of it plus more
*lots of tools to support mod making
*free for no profit mods and allows access to alot of asserts.

Why you think its terrible?
What would you suggest?

Well the thing is that this is no easy task and i would need alot of help from others if this was ever to take off. So thats why im getting suggestions now before i even start.

I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but most of the modding teams tend to, as Per said, fade away. In the past few years I've been hanging around, there were tons of announcements... Guess how many finished what they've announced.

Frankly, I think you're posting this in the wrong forum. Most of the people here are not XSI professionals nor HL2 mapper makers. And you need such people. Maybe someone suitable appears in the time to come, till then try to work on the concept and post a real challenge, like:

* modelers - XSI knowledge, animation and rigging experience, exporting to HL2 models format, blah-blah... needed

Wish you luck, as always.

FIFE does look nice but i figured it's just for testing at this stage, couldn't test D3d.Actually i can only view maps and all animations gone crazy. FIFE is fallout like "engine", i hope they would finish it after (<2 years?) So Lodle, how do you intend to start making this engine, what graphic formats, scripting C++?

Source refers to the source engine that the current series of valve games run on. More info --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_engine

Im not going to be making the engine. The engine is source (as above) and if you own a copy of half life 2 on steam you get to use the source sdk (which allows you to change every thing in the game but any thing to do with the engine you cant). The sdk comes with tools to build maps (hammer), compile models, lip sync and alot more.

Well, atm im working on golden eye source (http://goldeneyesource.com) and have become vary familiar with the source engine.

Im thinking of a 1st / 3rd person hybrid (like dues ex) so the world seems more real.

I am aware of the size of fallout 2 and im gonna make the trial map and other bits before i start looking at getting people on board so that every one can see that im serious about this.

I know alot of people arnt skilled with the tools required and i do talk to alot of people who are. But that doesnt mean they are interested in making this mod (and hence i posted here). And to add to this i know how to do alot of this and will be looking at teaching any one who wants to help out.

Some more info on formats:
Maps in the form of bsp made using hammer (comes with hl2)
Models in the form of mdl. Exporters for 3ds max, xsi (and others)
Textures in the for of vtm. Plugins for photoshop and paint.net plus many converter programs.
Sounds in the form of waves (yey simple :P)

Programing will be in c++ using ONLY visual studio 2003 (other wise big problems) and i will be doing most of it.

Ill be writing up the general plan in a day or to.

Why Fallout in Source? I Want Fallout(s) in Fallout Engine. :>

Because fallout engine is old and shows its age. And the source engine will allow it to be full 3d and very high detail.

I do not want to make your idea bad or discourage you, but...

...I (personally) want pixel-detailed graphic and not 3D detailed-whatsoever. :>

Indeed. The "old" aspect is what makes fallout awesome.

If it was shiny (like FOT  ) no one would like it (talking about fallout fans not the mainstream gamer community)

Yeah, the video above sparked a large thread in the 'news' section of the forums a couple months back.

You do relise that the source engine can make games that are not 1st person, you could use it to make a 3d game with an isometric perspective.

If you could show us some more (like that detailed plan you suggested) I think people could consider it. But as it is now it's just like all the fallout online attempts... doomed to be flamed to death.

lisac2k is very right. Though most people here are fallout enthusiasts the major part has no useful skills what so eva', so look at specific forums instead. And narrowing the tasks to smaller portions that can be done in days rather than years is often better so that the project don't die when a key talent leaves for thailand and gets stuck in customs with unreasonable amounts of acid in his newly bought bongo drum. Just saying that unpaid work is often easy to put aside.

I would love to see a small "demo" of what you can do with the engine. Use the old assets and put together something small.. Like how you would handle dialogue, combat and all that. Don't have to be fancy. Just flesh it out some more

Cheers

It would be nice to see some sort of project like this to succeed in some way. Because there has been some FPS projects before, but none of them have become anything really. Even if it was some sort of demo, I for one, would love to try it out. As far as having a commersial Fallout FPS-game, that I would not like, well I dont like the idea. But as far as fan-made content goes, if you believe you can deliver something faloutish, I would love to see do something. I mean lets face it, internet is full of people like me who do abslutely nothing except look into message boards and/or write to them, it would be great to see someone do something, even if were a Fallout-FPS project or Fallout-RTS or anything.

Best of luck to your idea, hope it tuns into a project that will deliver something for all of us.

Sadly, I can only think of two words to fit your project: Cease, and Desist.

You're going to use a registered trademark belonging to Bethesda, at the same time they're developing a sequel to that trademark. It doesn't help your case one iota you'll be using a game engine designed by a competitor to Bethesda.

With that said, I wish you good luck. You're gonna need it...

hl2

At first: I like Source engine, but I am not a modeler. I know technic of making mod (source, models, maps) but I'm missing that essential artistic part.
Also I think that recreating F2 to Source engine is impossible plan. Even Fallout 1 is too sophisticated and complicated.
For me - the greatest thing we can do - recreation of textures and 3D models from original fallout games (e.g. chairs and tables from vault - models, walls - textures etc). And then release it to everybody who wants it. That would be an acceleration for mods like this.
After doing such a thing collection of objects from game - we can start thinking about engine we will use for game (models are universal and they can be imported to any 3D engine)
