Fallout Tactics crashes while initializing

Realmstalker

First time out of the vault
Hi, I'm new to the forum and the main reason I joined was because I have a slight problem. I just recently got into a Fallout retrofest and decided to go back through each of the games and having gone through Fallout, and Fallout 2, it was time for tactics. Now, I had never had any problems in the past with FOT, however now, after a brand new install (2 in fact) it crashes before it even gets to the intro movie. The screen flickers as though going into the video mode for the game, then the little windows xp crash window comes up saying that BOS.exe has caused an error and will be shut down.

As I mentioned before, I have never had problems with the game running, howeverthat was on another system. My current system should be more than capable of handling the program. Here are specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2.0 ghz
1 gig RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 XT (128 megs video ram)

Running Windows XP SP2
Direct X 9.0c
ATI Omega Drivers v 2.6.05a

I've tried the game patched and unpatched, using different compatibility modes, windowed and not, it just doesn't seem to want to let me play.

Thanks in advance.

Try, opening your C:\bos.cfg file in notepad and changing/adding the line {sound.provider} = {No 3D Sound}.

There's also a file C:\bos_log.txt, see if there has been any error messages generated in there and if so post them here. Though that's mainly prints errors once you've started the game.

There's another in your core folder, if changing the first doesn't work change that one as well.

I tried looking for the files that you said to look for but I cannot find bos.cfg or bos_log.txt... perhaps there are different names for these files? I did a search on the .cfg file and came up with nothing... I'll continue looking though...

Hmm perhaps the game generates them after being first run, sorry such a long time since I first installed FOT.

In that case try renaming/moving two files from the miles directory.

Mssa3d.m3d

&

Mssa3d2.m3d.

If the game starts then change the sound option from miles fast 2d positional audio to something more appropriate for your set up or the No 3D Sound option.

FOT crashes on startup.

I've installed the game today, and I can't get the game to launch properly! It just hangs in a black screen when I double click on BOS.exe, and when I ctr+alt+del, it shows that the bos.exe is not responding, and I have to exit it manually.

I HAVE installed the 1.27 patch.
I HAVE the latest DirectX. (DX9c)
I HAVE the latest video drivers.
I HAVE tried making images from the cd's and using them from the HD.
I HAVE tried all three installation methods, small, medium, and full.
I HAVE tried the game without installing the patch.
I HAVE tried compatability mode.

Any ideas?

Oh, and another thing, I tried using the no-cd crack, to see if it will solve my problem, but whenever I try to crack it using the cd-check remover, it says the CRC is invalid! It's strange cause I havn't modified the exe in any way. And yes, I patched the game to 1.27. and used the 1.27 crack.
Is there an actual cracked exe on the internet available to download? All I found was the exe modifiers.

I would say no, because you haven't told us what your system is!

But it's most likely the known black screen problem.

Search the forum in future, and no warez talk!

Merged.

I have! I must've missed this one while searching.

Anyway, the symptoms are very similar, and I've tried those both things, and still no anvil. The funny thing is, I can run FT Tools.exe perfectly fine, and audio works fine an all under all settings. It's just BOS.exe that refuses to work.

My specs are as follows:
axp 3000 @ 2.2
GA-v7ax rev 1.1
Sapphire Radeon 9700np softmod to Pro
256+256+512 pc2700 Samsung
ALS4000 Soundcard

Also, I do not see other *.cfg files under /core besides the cdcheck and keys.

The Log file under C:/ is also empty.

The log file is IIRC for the editor. If you can run the editor change the options to no sound and then copy the cfg file from C:\ to your FOT directory and then see if that helps.

If not try some of the solutions in this thread.

Sounds like you're having compatability issues with your sound card. Once you've started the game change the sound settings under the options and then retry starting it without the -s.

When I run the game with -s, there's no options under sound, like shown here;

I tried tinkering with the hardware acceleration slider under dxdiag, but nothing seems to help.

BUT, I was able to FIX the problem, and now able to run the game with sound by deleting the /miles directory. What exactly does that folder do? It looked like software audio effects to me, like EAX.

Miles

The only reason I can think of that the editor worked and not the main game is the intro movies. You can try putting the folder back and pasting in the sound provider line as above or try some different codecs.

I just installed FoT and when i start it up it stays at a black screen. You can hear the music ( i haven't played the fallouts in years but i think it sounds like a fallout theme of music) but then it just goes into more of a buzzing sound. I've tried basically everything there was on this forum and none of it helped... I have the latest patch (1.27) as far as i know... perhaps i'll do another download and reinstall just in case. Anyways... after the black screen, if i hit alt-tab, start, or ctrl-alt-delete on my keyboard, it will goto the blue screen of death... or at least close enough. It's not the 'press a key to continue', it flashes, can't read it, then reboots the computer. Rather annoying... Any help would be fantastic. Here's my system:

Athlon AMD 64 3400+
1 GB DDR400 Dual Channel RAM (corsair if that matters)
Geforce 6800GT 256mb
the regular on board sound card
windows XP SP2

I tried running the game in compatability mode too... didn't do anything.

You've tried moving the two files out of the miles folder, after you've run the patch?

Try starting up the editor, then copy the cfg file it generates directly under c: to your core folder.

Check your sound card support for known conflicts with the Miles system.

never mind... i got it to work... i feel so dumb, all id id was find the latest video driver:)

Hello and trouble with crashes

Decided to reinstall after quite a while, had 2 new systems since last time i played, anyway after about 5 minutes of playing, my entire system freezes up and i have to turn it off on the tower to restart.

system specs

Windows xp pro
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (2.2ghz)
1024mb ram
Radeon 9600 pro

latest drivers and direct x installed.

Monitor currently running in 1280 by 1024 on a 19" TFT monitor

After searching the forums ive tried the following:

Updating to latest version
Closing all other programs
reinstalling drivers
reinistalling game

any ideas?....games unplayable like this :(

Either conflict with xp pro or your graphics card? Or it might be the sound, try changing the sound settings or running it with out sound.

Make a shortcut to the bos.exe and then add a space and then -s to the path.

Tried the sound thing, thought it had worked but then it froze, i had this problem before and eventually gave up when i was using xp home.

any more suggestions?

You can try these other options in the shortcut,

-3 use direct x 3
-7 use direct x 7
-g use windows gdi

Otherwise I'm out of suggestions, but from reading other threads it might be your graphics card. A couple of other people with Radeon cards have had problems running FOT.

Perhaps try some older drivers for your card instead of the latest?
