Fallout: The Frontier - Released!

It's what I find even worse ... so much time and work spend on it and then the story is as lame as it gets. :p What a waste.

Like taking seven years to make the mod somehow exempts it from criticism, and that applies to any other for that matter. Just the fact they are focusing on the worst part of New Vegas, the shooting, shows how misguided they are.

It seems so far the isometric Fallouts get actual well made mods like Fallout Nevada and Fallout Sonora.

Alright, put few hours into it, mostly doing sidequests and such and I think I had enough. I didn't even get to vehicles as the world, the emphasis on combat and few other things just frustrated me to no end. Here are my personal impressions of around 2 hours of gameplay. A few minor spoilers, nothing else:

-The story is rather weird, why would NCR let exiles run off with tanks, vehicles and such? Really not making sense here.

-The Intro sequence, where you are one of the members of the NCR attacking BOS is bad. I killed like 3, before I decided to reload and skip it.

-Shooting course is the most dreadful thing I have experienced thus far. Fallout New Vegas FPS is meh at best, the traps still trigger even with light step. The final section with grenades was horrible. I did it for the bragging rights, but still, it sucked. It was a worse version of COD training course.

-Perks for doing nothing. Did the course? +3 critical chance. Saved a patient? +2% healing efficiency.

-Network Eyebots? WTF?

-There are rabbits and more plants (tomatoes, pumpins, etc)

-Giving a prisoner Medx helps him? How? It’s temporary!

-Goose Hollow? What’s the point of it? A location that barely has anything, outside of few quests and some minor NPCs.

-So many pointless NPCs.

-The atmosphere is good, but the world, feels like a badly combined Fallout 3 city with a bit of open world of New Vegas.

-Sidequests were simple as hell, with few alternate solutions. You found out that a guy was forcing someone to stay? You can’t threaten him, only kill his ass after doing the quest. One was a massive trek across Frontier to find out one person.

-Fur Spiders, still poison you with heartless.

-Wendigos (aka Frozen Ghouls).
What the hell??? I had Remnants Power Armour, 50 DR and around 50 DT. They were able to almost break it with a couple of hits.

At this point, I decided to stop playing before I get a headache. The lore raping, the stupid emphasis on combat. Urgh.

I would have loved to have actual vehicles in New Vegas, but not if I have to go through the entirety of the mod.

Technical aspects look great. Map design, weapons and the vehicles look top notch for an NV mod.

I agree, it's the rest of the world and story that are the biggest issue with the world.

I will give Frontier credit, where it's due. It accomplished some truly amazing things, but writing is not one of them.

Shit, is it really that bad? I was excited for it. Guess I will just go back to waiting for the Sonora translation

It's a mixed bag. Lore wise, story wise, meh at best. Too much focus was put on combat.

Exploration wise, decent.

Enemies wise? Mixed bag.

I would give it 6/10 at best, as of right now.

i'll play it once i get to the recommended level in my next vanilla playthrough of fallout new vegas. can't really load up an old save since i delete them once i'm finished. but as of right now gotta finish wasteland 3.

Jesus Christ, I just played a mission where you need to get going through the streets of post apocalyptic Portland, defending a tank from anti tank fire. If the tank gets too much damaged and it is destroyed, you fail. They give you something for you to fix the tank when it gets damaged.

Ok, typical CoD nonsense right? Yes but it gets even better. The tank actually is very resistant and can kill all enemies fine on its own, independent of your input, actually trying to help is really discouraged because the tank is a bigger threat to you than the enemies as his big gun hits have a big area of effect and you have zero control over what it is aiming. It gets even better, loads of enemies with area of effect guns and while the tank blocks hit, it doesnt block the AoE they cause, so when you go fix the tank, you blow up.

It gets even better, on the begining of the game, you have the options of choosing a weapon, if you dont choose a rifle, you are fucked until you find one as pretty much most enemies on this scripted sequence have AoE guns and are firing from high ground, outside your guns range and if you didnt pick a rifle, you will only have access to peashooters that do nothing and trying to shoot the enemies will only get you killed.

It gets even better, there are plenty of places on the streets where you dont even have cover to flank and do something, after you finally reach the end, then, plot twist, the legion attacks and you are captured.

It gets even better, the levels of tardation keep going until reaching a climax, not even Fallout 3 manage that but I will get there, the legion captures you and everybody on the legion knows you are the legendary courier just by looking at you on a world where there are no cameras pratically everywhere. The retardation keeps getting better, the legion head honcho himself comes to torture you.

It gets even better, they didnt include the Enclave because it is a "facist fantasy" but the legion leader pretty much tortures you with a hammer and cut the arm and leg of some random NCR NPC with an axe and then just cut his head later, making the Enclave look like hippies in comparison. The legion leader looks like some comic book villain and decide to crucify you after you fail to give him any info about the NCR goals and how are you supposedly to know that when you were just recruited. Wouldnt be smarter he trying to recruit you into being a double agent?

But no, oh no, they are commited into showing how retardly evil the dude is, you are crucified.

Then, the retardation reaches it climax, some band of NCR deserters, have more Vertibirds than the entire NCR had on Hoover Dam and mount a complicated rescuing opperation behind enemy lines to... rescue you, yeah, just you, the legendary Courier that everyone and his mother knows about. I mean, woah... it is a pity because you see they actually tried hard to script all this bullshit, it is a pity that despite their work, it is still bullshit.

Motherfucking lol. From a post on the RPG Codex.

Is there actually a reason given why they're fighting tooth and nail (with more resources than the Mojave) over a frozen over Old World graveyard with no tactical benefit?

"It gets even better" ad infinitum.
Someones vocabulary needs to get better.

Yeah, I think I'll have a hard pass on this mod. Even the best ones are usually overrated as hell.

The over-emphasis on that was to point out how retarded the whole thing was, and it's actually not uncommon to do that when you point out how something just gets worse and worse. That poster is actually one of more prestigious on the forum.

I know the production of this mod started in 2013 since people are mentioning that it took seven years to make, but why not just restart everything in the Fallout 4's Gamebryo version of the engine? I know it sucks to start from scratch after putting a lot of work, but as i much as i rag on Fallout 4 for being piss poor, the overall gun gameplay was actually not bad. It's certainly far better than New Vegas in terms of gunplay feel and if they wanted to make it more like Call of Duty, then that would have been the best option.

The writing in these mods is usually shit. Mods like this are good to tear apart and LARP about in the world they spent 7 years on for nothing.
