Fan Made Fallout Officially DBA

Frankly, I can't understand why there are so many talented modders on seperate projects instead of concentrating efforts within one TC. If we had all big-time modders working on one project (FMF people, Nuclear Winter, Forgotten Knight, FO 1.5 Ressurection devs, Lexx and others), I think we would be playing a TC already.
Because world just does not work so simple.

Amen to that!

Nice idea, but will only ever happen if one group completes their project and then joins another group.

No group would give up on their own project to join another.

That FMF post-mortem on the first page of the site is very informative and touches on a number of issues that we've been dealing with during Shelter development.

In a way it's like having someone from the future bring warnings about what not to do and why.

Mind you, some of them we've already worked out. For instance, that similar-wall-texture-finding thing hit us too, but we upgraded the editor to group similar tiles.

I always knew that being stuck with the Fallout engine and it's hardcoded crap was hard, but the article gave me a new appreciation for the Fallout mod community and horrible things they have to deal with to get anything working.

The talking head of the fisherman is pretty cool, I have to say.

Also I have to agree on the words from Mister Jesterka. Anyway, the one body known as Lisac2k and the one body known as me is working on some other project together, so maybe other great names want to join too... :P

Or if project will die ;)

And what project you're working on together with Lisac2k? SD? Or maybe that FOnline thing?

Anyway, I'm starting my own TC, not sure what this will be yet. Anyone wants to join to this holy crusade? :ugly:

The plan at the moment is to incorporate City on the coast into MR as it is a stand alone area.

Is there anyother (finished) content that could be used ?
I mean 7 years down the drain would be a big waste..

Don't let it die like Fallout Yurop..

Not that I'm aware of. ASAIK, COTC was the only area with significant work done and even that wasn't finished.

That sounds pretty depressing... I've seen a lot of talking on the forums, so I expected the content to be somewhere (FTP).

After reading the FMF post-mortem, it almost seems like with how inefficient the Fallout 2 map editor is and how fickle the scripting is within Fallout 2, it would be for the best if the all the great modders just finish up the total conversions of Fallout 2 (if they can), and then move on to FIFE or some other more flexible and user-friendly option (Note: I'm not sure that FIFE currently fits that bill as it is a work in progress, but since it is open source the potential is there to become what the community needs).

Making a mod is hard work...
I learnt to script using the tuto from Fmf, their disparition make me sad...
I guess they planned too much and too far, instead of going on progressively. My condoleance to the team anyway.

But I never really checked FIFE. Is it really more simple?
With fallout, you have the game as a basis (graphics, dialogue, maps, etc, etc), but with Fife you have to start almost from nothing no?

Yeah, I have seen some pretty nice laser pistols and other inventory/ ground item stuff, I sure would like to grab some of them... (especially the wood boat!)
Is there any chance that someone make them all available, so we can upload them in the fallout repository ?

I'm really sorry, guys. I know how much work you put into this and It's sad to see another promising project come to an end. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

I'll stay cautiously optimistic with the MR mod; maybe a small part of the retro Fallout glory can still be salvaged. Until then, all we can do is wait and watch what Bethesda will do with this beloved franchise.

I'm obviously not going to open the FTP directory up to everyone but Chris Parks has access. If someone else wants to poke around in there as well and pinch some things to be uploaded elsewhere, I'll consider it.

I had thought of making one fat ass dump of everything and just uploading it to one of those free file servers or here at NMA. The FMF site doesn't have the bandwidth to allow everyone to download it.

Lets start the bidding...

Do I hear five bucks? :D

...four? :)

...ok three bucks and a bottle of Rad-X?

Oh well...I tried...well I didn't really but I pretended to...

...hum I wonder if that is what the problem has been this whole time?

I'm all for that idea! I'm sure that it will serve some use for other mods that are in progress!

In the long run, FIFE would be a good option for Fallout modding. I already wrote about it at falloutnow.de what needs to be done in order to start a FIFE based Fallout emulator. If somebody is interested in details, I can translate the FAQ I compiled about this topic. In short, the biggest part which needs to be done is to reintroduce the Fallout data format. After this is done, the engine can handle *.frms and *.acms. In terms of sustainability, I´d personally not recommend to bother about writing a FO script converter, as python or any other scripting language is more powerful and easier to handle then the Fallout scripting language is. Surely, this whole process isn´t a one week approach but one year with the proper team should do the trick.

Speaking about editor tools, we @FIFE are currently rewrite the editor to make it fit into a modular design which enables FIFE projects to use the editor as base and add everything else as plugin. Asset management is already improved in the current trunk version, as we provide a incremental search feature for assets.

You can see an example in this screencapture.

So, a potential FIFE Fallout can benefit from the basic editor right from the start, and extend it later. If you are interested in details about the editor improvements, we have some documents available at the fife forums / wiki:

FIFE Wiki, editor category
