Fast Travel

First time out of the vault
Yeah, so in at least one of those previews it was confirmed that there will be a fast travel system in Fallout 3 but that they haven't yet figured out how they would implement it. Here is my suggestion on how not to fuck it up.

Instead of having an absurd instant teleportation system like in Oblivion, they should have the screen display the old school "Vault-Tec Maps" travel screen, complete with iron cross marker and Indiana Jones dotted line showing your movement from point A to point B. Also I think a system of random encounters should be implemented to prevent overuse, although with a decressed frequency of violent encounters so that it is still a better option than traditional travel.

Assuming they implement a Morrowind style fast travel system, they could use Caravans (suggested by Blinzler on the official forums) very much in the way they used Silt Strider platforms.

Personally I think in the absolute least they should use the Vault-Tec map as the loading screen showing the line crossing from your current location to your travel destination as a "load bar".

Discuss.

And, that way, you could still have 'special encounters'. I want to get randomly jumped by raiders, so I can turn around with an assault rifle and Bloody Mess their asses with VATS, so I can recreate a Fallout 2 scene on one of my saves.

Why aren't you on the F3 development team?? That would be a good idea to do, and a little more Fallout orginal. But Bethesda doesn't care about Fallout fans. Let's face facts: They want to get the youngsters who haven't played Fallout to play this game. It isn't going to be like that, or they would have said more to sooth the fallout uproar.
However, I am sure that it will be somewhat of a good fps.

Just don't even think about calling it Fallout.

As I can take from your nickname - you are a youngster yourself^^

Many thanks, DS.

Alright, so Random Encounters have been confirmed by Pete, just not the method they are using. While I very highly doubt they will do anything resembling the original Fallout Travel or Random Encounters I guess I can always keep my fingers crossed.

The game is in first person and there is actually a world in between islands of civilization so actual travel is possible. In other words it is a completely different kind of game, so why would you assume anything to the contrary?
