First Dead Money review out

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
GamerLimit has put up a review on the first New Vegas DLC, the first of many most likely. They give it a 7.0, arguing that while it's far from bad it probably doesn't live up to the price tag. Here's a snippet:
In spite of some mechanics issues, the writing for Dead Money is on par with the quality of New Vegas. All of the characters have their own demons to deal with, and I really enjoyed talking to them at great length, as well as dealing with their fates at the end of the package. While your team’s backstory and narrative is fleshed out, the actual quest isn’t as engaging – like the Resident Evil series, the bulk of your information is going to come from various notes and computer logs – not from the events of the main story.

While there are a few key tidbits here and there that really bring the story together at the end, a lot of players will most likely glance over them. Personally, I also felt like the buildup to get into the casino itself was too long, and the surrounding areas housed too many drab looking locales – I know that you’re supposed to get the feeling that poisonous gas has overrun the area, but it could have looked a little more detailed.
Thanks to cunningandvalor for spotting it.

Hey Innawerkz - this is the author of the Gamer Limit article.

Thanks for the feedback! For whatever reason, a few paragraphs regarding the quality of the writing/narrative weren't added into the full review (server rollback or what have you) - additionally, due to your comment, I clarified my position on "super loot", stating that it doesn't make or break a package for me, but others may have come to expect it, considering the pedigree of Fallout 3's various packs and gadgets.

My overall take on Dead Money is that it feels a lot like The Pitt, but the locales aren't as inspiring or original, and it doesn't contain enough "wow" moments like The Pitt did (such as the arena fight). I reviewed every bit of Fallout 3 DLC, and I gave The Pitt an 8.5.

No worries. Don't change it on my account. :D I don't venture onto too many game sites, so your review could be perfectly informative for your target audience.

Despite the parts that I mentioned could use a little more elaboration to help me decide if Dead Money is a worthwhile purchase, it still managed to inform me of what to expect and helped to keep any overly optimistic expectations in check. I can't imagine it's easy being the first to review on anything. It would seem all-too-easy to wait for others to write their review, pick & choose what you agree with, then regurgitate it in your own words.

It's great to see that you are looking for feedback & adjusting/expanding your opinions to help others make an informed decision.

No "Thanks to cunningandvalor for spotting it"? I see how it is now.

You know what? I'm too pissed off for unrelated stuff to answer anyone calmly right now. I put that in the newspost anyway.

Maybe Obsidian might do the right thing and have Beth release all the DLC in one package akin to an expansion instead of the money leeching GOTY that is all the rage. Other than that, I highly doubt I'll ever play this thing. Still looks somewhat decent at least.

I can only ever dream....

I was kidding, but hey thanks.

I did watch it a bit and so far seemed ok. What did rise my eyebrow was the Hologram Rifle. First time I saw the name it though it was some kind EMP weapon against security holograms. But apparently it killed live things to. So any idea, is it a pulse weapon that just got an absurd name?

It's a weapon Elijah made from hologram emitters.

EDIT: Also, the developers got crafty when placing traps. They often place them where they are hard to see, or in the Cloud where you can't see at all. Damn you and bless you, Obsidian.

Wow.. I was ready to ignore this title but almost every negative he referenced sound more like positives or non-issues. I actually like what he terms the Resident Evil (or, what I call System Shock) style of building up tension and story through long discarded logs. There is something poignant in finding the abandoned detritus of a long dead civilization -- it was one of the few bright points in Bioshock 2.

Drab interiors are a non-issue (I just blame limited development times and Gamebryo). Never played The Pit, but I can't imagine it was really all that great.. it was Fallout 3 after all. ;)

The exteriors are really not that bad IMO. Though I will probably buy the DLC again for the PC Version. This is something that is entirly fixable with mods.

Personally, good article. I agree with some things and disagree with others though most of that comes down entirly to opinion/viewpoint. I'm not even kidding if I say I like the DLC more than the main game (Well, disregarding Fallouty feeling)

It's like reading an excellent short story. Combine that with really challenging combat and I'm game.

Also I love the kind of trial and error the Add-On provided. Never felt cheap for me, rather like a puzzle to solve. (I would love to see trial and error games get a revival sometimes. I just love em too much)

Yeah, I was kind of overreacting because of tiredness and other bullshit. Not that it's an excuse but hey, you've got dickishness in spades here already.

On the matter of the review mmmh.. I dunno, from what I've seen on Youtube mixed with what I read here it may be a love it/hate it for me. If nothing else story/setting/dialogue sound pretty cool, regardless of how "notary-verified Fallouty" (thanks Vince for the expression) they are.

In case someone doesn't mind spoilers, there is some gameplay stuff on youtube already. Dead Money so far (only watched the first part) looks at least interesting to me now.

Is it just me or are this guys (he and other "let's play"-guys who played and filmed Dead Money until now) really so hard to stand, because of their constant need to jabber some crap and their seemingly aversion against long dialogs?

No, it's not just you. They're really damn fucking annoying.
