FO1: Putting armor on Ian/Tycho

First time out of the vault
Hello, I just started playing FO1 this past week and was wondering if it was possible to put armor on Ian or Tycho....or the dog would be cool too! If not....how long do most people keep Ian or Tycho around, do they just let them die after a certain point of the game and solo, or try to keep them around. They always seem to get slaughtered by the super mutants. Oh ya, another quick question...what level do people usually beat the game. Thanks!!!

Yeah, you can put Power Armour on Dogmeat.
And it's frigging' cool!

Jeez.

No, you can NOT put armour on any of the NPCs in Fallout 1. Sorry. Blame God.

And how long should you keep them around? Until you feel like shooting them. That simple. :P

I beat the game at level 5, but then again: I'm a pro. 8)

As for armour it's not until Fallout 2. You can give them armour if you want to, but they'll just carry it n the inventory. In Fallout thay just have to stay out of the line of fire. NPC's are useful for the mid-game, they help a lot in early combat and they are useful as pack mules (e.g. in the Glow) carrying gear to be sold later. You may want to leave them anywhere, or just in a safe area before you enter combat (outside the Military Base etc.)

Oh, and good luck keeping Dogmeat alive in late game :( It's HARD

The maximum level is 21, but it;'s likely you won't attain it at all, unless you stop to gather addtional experience from combat. I'd say that you should expect to be anywhere between 13-16 as you finish the game, depending on how many quests you complete.

The NPC's you can pick up in fallout 1 do not have a lengthy life space in terms of usefulness. When you start fighting super mutants, the NPC's have a tendancy to get cut down in one hit. I just let them get blown to bits or I tell them to stay behind before marching off to some extremely hazardous locations.

Try taking out the BoS, keeping Dogmeat alive. Dam that was hard, even in hadened power armour. Painful too. A lot of reloads due to sawing in half by gatling gun.

NPC turn into pack mules/cannon fodder around the military base. (and even earlier)

ive never even had the guts to try keeping dogmeat alive...but this time....im gonna make it.....im also playing with an evil character for the first time...

1. In Fallout 1, I recently learned the best way to use NPCs as packmules. There's no "trade" option as in F2, but if you "barter" and just give stuff to them, there is ZERO encumberance factor. You can have Ian alone carrying all the booty from the military base and nothing bad happens.

Of course, the Gunrunner's shop has gattling lasers and miniguns sprayed all over the floor, and I've got two sacks at the Hub with almost 99999 caps in each.

2. The only way I've been able to easily keep Dogmeat alive to the end is to never get him until after I've done all the heavy work. Then, the odds of him getting killed off as you travel about is pretty much nil.

How did you manage to get so many caps? Is it from blackmailing bob from bob's iguana bits?
If your good you can get like 2k everytime you press him and thats not waiting 3 days each time.

heehee, I love blackmailing bob

"I got bigger needs, wich means I need more money"

Meh, Dogmeat's easy to keepo alive once you know the tricks.

And if you give Ian a .223 pistol, he's murder to super muties, even Deathclaws (if you keep their attention.)

It'd be cool if someone did FO in the FO2 engine.

You cant get more than 1 Hardend PwrArmr, 1 PwrdArmr, and one Bhood armor, so you'd still have to play it safe aginst muties.

Still, I think it fits the pliot better to have the NPCs have limited usefullness, since it's the VAULT DWELLER who's the badass mofo, not his group. (well, Dogmeat's basass.)

I believe you can get 3+ power armours, providing you get one from Talus, repair the damaged one and raid the storeroom on the 1st floor of the bunker (opposite to the training hall). I remember that you need el lockpick and high Skills for this one. Plus, you have to battle the guards, so it's not an option for getting your first Power Armour. You'd have to consult Per's guide, I believe it has the details.

You mean, by taking out the Cathedral, cleansing the Military Base, picking up Dogmeat in Junktown, and returning to Mariposa to finish the job and blow it up?

I always finish the Master off last, so that he knows that he's failed ;) and odds are that Dogmeat wouldn't survive the Cathedral battle.

On the PwrArmr issue, I stand corrected Silencer. I havent botherd to massacre the brotherhood yet.

Battle ? Cathedral ?

You can do it w/o fighting.

The stealth approaches are best for dogmeat.

For the Cathedral I really like the "sneak in & arm the nuke" method.

My worst problem with dogmeat is the Military Base. I tried to pen him between forcefields, but when I go down to the next level, he still gets off the elevator with me.

I've been reading the forums here and at Gamefaqs for a while, and today I finally decided to point something out that may or may not have been said before (yes, I did the good thing, and ran a search first, but only on this board, and couldn't find this being brought up).

When it comes to keeping Dogmeat alive... you can use stimpacks on other characters, you know.

I was able to keep him alive through the Military Base, but got tired of being a vet by the time I got underneath the Cathedral.

(The next topic I didn't run a search on.)

Need a butt-length of money? As long as your gambling skill is at least 60, find a roulette table and tape the '1' key down. Yes, it's cheap, but if you don't want to spend the time actually doing quests, or even random encounters, to get the caps you need, then what do you care?
