This press release reveals some details about FOnline: 2238, one of the games slated to make use of the FOnline engine.
The small indie development group, "Rotators", supported by the main developer of FOnline, A. Tsvetinsky "Cvet", are proud to present FOnline: 2238, the new massively multiplayer game, free of charge, based on the famous award-winning CRPG titles Fallout and Fallout 2.

The game adds several unique features regarding the players and their interactions, be it with other players, their respective groups or NPCs. First of all, there are groups: factions, gangs - call them whatever you like, which determine the fate of the world. Some of them are more powerful than others, some are cunning and treacherous, some even hideous. But they are there, conflicting with each other, or aligning with the policies of the greater powers - those who have technological advances, political power, are just plain bigger, or any other advantages over them. Choose your way: join your favorite group and spread their agenda throughout the wasteland. Decide for yourself how to handle the resistance - with good will or stubbornness. Respect the authorities or lead a revolution to throw them off the throne - it is your world, you decide.

From the technical point of view, the game will bring back the good old 2D isometric perspective. The engine supports several new features like object opacity and support for the PNG graphics format. The scripting language being used is the AngelCode Scripting Library (or simply AngelScript) created by Andreas Jonsson. The system requirements for the game can be considered minimal for today's mainstream computing: MS Windows 2000/XP/Vista, 56K or better internet connection and Fallout 2 CD. There are reports the game will run under Linux too (using WINE emulation), but generally we do not support it. English being the only supported language.
Not in direct competition with FOOL, it seems. Which could be a good thing, or is it etc. Note that the site seems to be a bit slow, so don't panic if the link doesn't work the first five or ten times.

That was fast, thanks Per.

Basically, we took the development of the old project and turned it into another direction. A small idea in the very beginning became kinda obsession during the last few months. Hopefully, the Fallout fanbase share our ideals and shall find our work amusing and refreshing.

I...don't get it.

Is it just a new title for FOnline ( same maps etc.. ) ?
Or is it yet another game ? Or did FOnline change completely and was canned...

It's the same FOnline as the one that had two open tests so far and for which the 3rd open test starts on August 15th, right ?

EDIT : oh ok. It's the same game but with a faction system and other new features. I'm reassured ( and was aware of that new factions system actually, that's why that press release was a bit confusing for me ).

Im pretty lost also!
Is this the same game or what?
I don't see any download client either?

It's the same game. It's just that it's now called FOnline 2238 because of the ( cool ) additional features.

No download client until 3rd open test : August 15th.

Cvet is providing us engine (FOnline), we're filling it with the content/features. It is one of two current projects, the other is also often referred to as "vanilla." I'm not sure if it sounds like a good analogy, but I'll try it anyway: it's something like Source Engine (FOnline Engine), Half-Life 2 ("Vanilla") and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (FOnline: 2238).

Aside from the numerous new features which are introduced since the last open beta test, we are proud to say that the whole content is written in English now. It is the same engine you remember of, but the overall experience... Drop by on 15.08.

Niiiiice...
FOnline is by far one of the greatest multiplayer experience I've ever had.
Despite massive PK, despite bugs...despite everything. Kudos to Cvet and team.

Got dammit was looking for my FO2 CD and now I realized that I left it behind in Baghdad when I moved.

A digital download works too if you have access to the critter.dat and master.dat files.

I'm almost sure there is. Try
/server irc.forestnet.org
And then - /join #fonline and /join #theunity
Or #unity, i can't remember :-x

"Rotators" ?

Does this have anything to do with the small group also called the "Rotators" of the last FOnline open beta test ?

Anyway, can't wait for the next beta.

Yes, the development team was later based on the rotators group from the game. That means, some of the (main) members are in the dev team.

May I ask if the Unity is an existing, joinable faction in FOnline 2238 now that there is that faction system ? Or do we have to create it and roleplay it ? ( I'm good with either options  praise the Master )
