Game Revolution previews Fallout 3

I disagree. I always liked the Fallout character creation system and how it allowed to create a decent character.

Meh, it was a good system, but a bit imbalanced. I don't see how nerfing characteristics would be the best solutions, since high HP-count and high skills and Gifted were the biggest problems, but we'll see what they do.

If I wanted to change something in SPECIAL it would be removing HP increase per level.
It allows creating monstrous characters. For example I noticed when I played F1 with FDM that a mid level character in CA could survive a burst from minigun (about 40-60 points of damage on average), just because of high HP.

I like Gifted, because it allows me to choice between skills and stats - I often create non Gifted characters.
As for the high skills - I like them too - it allows to create characters that are interesting to play in opposition to very limited characters from Arcanum.

The 3rd person part is good news even if it isn't isometric.
I remember one of the Beth designers talking about how none of the creatures he creates are evil, they're all there for a reason and they all have a right to exist and blah blah blah, that was the case in F/F2 while on these screens the mutants look like they exist to rip your nuts off.

Just noticed that everyone in that vault 101 has a pipboy on their arm.

I'm sorry, does everyone have selective memories or something?

Yes, the Unity had a backstory and its leaders had rational reasons for doing what they were doing, but the supermutants themselves were dumb, brute force creatures intent on doing whatever they were told. They weren't some kind of deep philosophical army with major human overtones.

Yes, Fallout has graytones, that doesn't mean some animals walk straight into being such a nuisance that getting rid of them is ok (killing all the radscorpions or deathclaws) or that certain mutants were just mindless killers (centaurs, floaters, most supermutants)

I like the idea that each NPC has his own personal schedule, but I'll believe that when I see it.

Still unclear about viewpoint - typical game journalism really.

Bridge between FPS and RPG is extremely, extremely worrying, but again, this is from the mouth of a games journalist who has already shown he's not entirely sure on what's going on, so we'll see.

Also, I miss being able to target the eyes and groin. Those were the two best areas in the called shots. Without them, the exercise seems too technical and not that much fun.

I was talking about the way they look... (he was some kind of character designer remember? it's on your site)

No its not?

Yes, it is, considering that until now it looked like it had only first person and gears of war type close 3rd person. We only knew that those two would be in F3, now we hear that we can zoom out, therefore, good news. Whether it's well done or not is another story, the fact that its there is good.

Fallout Intro a Fan Favorite

A couple months back, GameSpy presented their list of the 25 most cinematic moments in gaming history. If you’ll remember, Ron Perlman’s famous “War. War Never Changes” narration from the Fallout intro rank #1 on the list.

Typical game ""URNAL-ism" by Bethesda, (fire, flush, and forget), or did I miss something in translation?
All Community Manager gstaff has to do to change history, the editorial content at Gamespy, is to write FO #1 on the Bethesda Blogg instead of the Nex Gen Wunderkind de jour Gears Of War?

Perhaps I should be careful what I wish for, .... a cure for cancer .. that American medicine would make too expensive to afford,
or maybe 40 dollar a barrel ... oil, but then I am a selfish American-centric and got to drive a Toyota to work ,
Or maybe FO3 be an actual* [*God's own Truth(tm)] RPG, not a vapid Oblivion 'action rpg', and not the nex' GEARS OF WAR wannabe.

Guess in this American Century I'll have to settle with ""probably"" *absolute* truths.

Well oil is at 70, and Gears Of War was top of the pop's at GAmespy ... until FO3 payola ups. Then the NEX greatest pay to play' FPS is top of the pops.

What Don't I Understand About The Top .... List 25?

The fix is on.**

July 3, 2007 Edit.

gstaff comment on Beth Blog.

Did homework and discovered the #1 spot for FO was a THIRD, and different beauty show for best of the gaming QUOTES.

Gamespy Top 25 cinema ... FO not mentioned.
Gamespy Fan Top 10 cinema ... FO #7.
Best game quotes ... ""War. War never changes .."". FO #1.

My mistake. Sorry.

gstaff crowing like a rooster about FO's pedigree,
The classic RPG tone of the FO IP implies that Beth's shooter in making will be different from the rest of the Big Shiny.
Pardon. Allow me to NOT to find a reference. But.
Established shooter franchises on console tend to sell 500 k plus on the top sales per year tallies.
On all platforms. Beth appears to have possible million seller. Not including the Bobble Heads.

Name recognition combination dynamic possible FO RPG and Bethesda Softworks action rpg.

gstaff crowing like a rooster about FO's pedigree,

Adding to the buzz like a 'Community Manger' can, can.

I wished they'd just invite like DAC and NMA top guys to preview it for'em maybe some motion in action would be better.

Were all reading the same stuff. Written by people that probably have zero to little understanding of Fallout to begin with and probably wanted to go cover the (then) Apple Iphone Upcomming-Tech story, then go to a bethesda preview session.

Invite previewer's who know the game and let them tell there thoughts and tell us whats REALLY changed. I'd read what they have to say religiously.

It is a new type of super mutant that Bethesda has invented.

You're right, I had totally forgotten about that. Just the thought it could use Tactics' Behemots had me choking on coke.

But the Swamp Thing is OK?

Not that I'm against new critters, this one just seems to be an ϋber version of the Super Mutants.

Man i really hate the new fallout fans. Those based on Oblivion. Damn.

I don't consider them Fallout fans. I consider them people that like the PA game from Bethesda, that borrowed a few ideas from FO.

Good Lord, I totally forgot about that one. Saw the movie 20+ years ago, it was somewhat funny, I must admit. Wouldn't be surprised if Dethesda trows in something like that... After all.

Oh my God! We are going to be replaced! I know 70% of Bethesda's budget goes to PR, but daaaaaaaaamn that PR department is good.

Really now, about the mutants and swamp things, you noticed how in every damn preview super mutants get listed as the primary enemy? In Fallout 2, I don't know if I even killed a super mutant, other than that bastard Lenny in NCR.

There were "remnants of the Master's Army" random encounters and the hostile second generation mutants at Mariposa in FO2, so I killed those.

What if I don't *want* to kill supermutants, hmm? I think Beth wants mutants to be critters like radscorpions or giant ants.

And, except the damn al quaida attack on Megaton or something ordered by Osama himself, I still don't see any raiders, slavers, rangers or anything else human to shoot at, maim or kill.

Taking 7 points off, 33, is a weird number unless they had status effects or new traits (traits have been mentioned several times). Taking off 5 to have averages of 5 might make sense, but then it is all in the formulae and quest design.

Sadly, if they are just made up numbers then it means that they haven't really got a good on their system. I am a tiny bit of a PnP mechanics fiend so I am concerned to hear tidbits about automated character generation based on gimmicky dialogue options with ugly numbers. I like a reasonable level of abstraction.
