It's a list.
7. Gears of War (series)

6. Wasteland

The original post-apocalyptic game, first released in 1988, Wasteland is a turn based roleplaying game where you take command of a squad of Desert Rangers who police the Wasteland, solving problems and bringing about justice. Set after a nuclear war punch up between the US and the Soviet Union. Survival is paramount in this world and the game itself is pretty difficult too. It was also one of the first games to feature a persistent world where it would save the changes you as the player enacted upon it. It also allowed multiple solutions to challenges that would arise. Due to technical limitations, instead of having all the dialogue and descriptions on the disk it came with a printed book and would tell you what paragraphs to read at a given point in the game. It allowed for a lot of detail and information and at the same time enough blanks space for one’s imagination to fill in the gaps.

2. Last of Us

1. Fallout (series)

This is the big enchilada of all post-apocalyptic games. With six titles to its credit, and 5 of them actually good, it shows us the future as the 1950s imagined it and that we all did in fact drop the bomb. The role-playing game series is not just about survival, but being able to move forward as a society. To rebuild in the aftermath of total annihilation, in the face of power hungry group, in the face of the repercussion of an unconscionable corporation, in the face of being lied to, in the face of running out of supplies. In the face of all this, you choose who you will be.

A game that has been out for 5 days is the #2 post apoc. game of all time? Wonder how much they were paid off to do that.

about Gears of War he said:
A world that has devolved to a point where destroying large chunks of a planet are A-OK, I think counts as post-apocalyptic. No matter where Marcus and crew seem to go it’s always in ruins.

Dear god this list is lazy. Surprised they didn't add Battlefield and COD on account of large chunks of stuff being blown up in those games.

Borderlands is not post-apocalyptic, even aside from the fact that it's not set on Earth. They should have narrowed their definition a bit. Maybe there aren't enough games that fit the bill, but it seems like there must be others.

This whole article is probably just an ad for the Last of Us, anyway, but I'm trying to think of better options.

Sonic CD should totally be on there, since you can travel into the bad future to a world where Robotnik has taken over. Seems as legitimate as some of the stuff on here.

Why are such lists posted as news? I saw that one in another forum already and couldn't find kind words for it.

Although I agree that the list is dumb (I love the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. "expansion packs") Gears of War does have a solid post-apoc vibe to some levels and so. It's not post-nuclear, but it's apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic depending on the level/game which you're playing.

I've finished the first game, and there are some interesting places to see there. Haven't played the rest of the series, but from what I've seen, there too.

However, looking at the list, one could easily add Mass Effect or whatever...

I always thougt FO:POS was bad too...

...

Besides of Lone Survivor and Metro as candidates for the list, what I would have definitely put into it are Fallen Earth, the MMO and The Fall.

Of course both are not perfect games. Fallen Earth has quality issues in post Release content imho but offers like 100-200h of solid post apocalyptic gameplay at least before the bad parts show.

The Fall might not have the best combat and character system but provides a great story and a very good atmosphere.

What would I throw out of the list? To open two spots I'd probably throw out Borderlands and Fuel.

Because people like commenting on lists. Nobody ever agrees with any list, even "good" ones, so they will want to leave a comment on why they don't like the list/which things should have been included/which entries should be higher or lower than others. So I guess the reason is: it drives traffic.

Because I enjoy the discussions they engender.
