Gatling Plasma mod

Blackened

I should set a cutom tite
I've done a simple mod that changes the Gatling Laser into Gatling Plasma - it affects the inventory art, and it also changes the damage type (but not the damage, or anything else).

It was done before a few days, but I wanted to playtest all the weapons to see if I can balance it, so that it becomes strong enough to be considered for the lategame. Unfortunately, due to RL issues, this had to be delayed. I don't know when will I be able to do modding again, but it won't be soon (from the last edit). And I'm not sure if I'll ever have the time.

Here's how does the new weapon looks (first pic), and how it was supposed to look (but I think the palette didn't allow it, it's still 8 bit):

And here's the readme:
[spoiler:e5d7dd3c14]GATLING PLASMA MOD v1.0

This mod converts Gatling Laser to a plasma weapon. It slightly changes its inventory art, and changes damage type to plasma.

Installation:
1: Place minilazr.FRM in Fallout2\data\Art\inven and overwrite if necessary
2: Place 00000028.pro in Fallout2\data\Proto\Items and overwrite if necessary

It should be compatable with any mod, also it doesn't require you starting a new savegame - any Gatling Laser weapons in your inventory are expected to be converted. Anyway, though the risk is very small (if there is any), better make a backup of your savegame(s).

Uninstallation:
Delete minilazr.FRM from Fallout2\data\Art\inven and 00000028.pro from Fallout2\data\Proto\Items then everything is going to get back as usual, and your savegames are supposed to be compatible with the savegames that you played using the mod.

Future plans: I'm planning to test the endgame weapons and increase the damage of the "Gatling Plasma"'s damage to be decent for the endgame - but it still won't be as good as the pulse weapons. However, I don't know when will I be able to work on modding again.

Any feedback is welcome. Feel free to PM me at NMA (my profile name is below), or to email me - my email is zari_potter@ abv.bg.

Here is the download link.

PM me if the download link isn't working, and I'll upload it again.

This would require mapping and such skills (to add the item to some various locations), and I'm yet to learn them. All it took to make this mod was some basic Photoshop skills, plus Cubik2k's item editor (I used some other tools too, but this editor is so epic that it was worth mentioning - without it I would), and some really basic Fallout modding skills, plus the idea. It would've took an experienced modder up to 5 minutes to make.

I am planning on a mod that could include this as a separate item (plus much more stuff), but it would take me at least an year, having in mind my RL, and there is a high chance that it would never come out.

I remeber some nice mod for FoT, which added plasma minigun (though it wasn't Gatling version), which looked quite unique.

I've seen some art around with a gun with 4 or 5 barrels of the plasma gun. Maybe that could be used on this?

This is a pretty interesting change, since laser damage is so useless in F2 it's good to get some variety into energy weapons, a burst weapon is nice.

Anyone tested? Is it bug proof?

Hope someday it will be a separate item, having both weapons (G. Laser and G. Plasma) would awesome.

Just tested by adding the minigun with an item editor. But since the mod is incredibly simple (edits the file for gatling laser and changes the image + the damage type), I don't think there is any chance for bugs.

Having both weapons in the game would be beyond my current modding "skills" (which are reeeeealy basic and can be learnt within a day). I have similar plans - keep all the Gatling Laser weapons as in vanilla, just replace one of them with Gatling Plasma, as a unique weapon. Also, resistances should be adjucted, so that laser weapons aren't pointless. But I plan to start this (and some more) for when I have the time, which is not likely to be any soon - it's absolutely possible to delay it until 2012, or even later.

@NoLostHope: I've read the post when you wrote it, but I forgot to finish my reply or something. Yes, having a burst energy weapon (with damage type different than laser) is supposed to add variety. In fact, I was even going to increase its damage a little bit, so that it's viable for the Enclave.

You could just map a single Special Encounter, add it there with some neat little goodie and that's it, if you want to make it as a seperate item. So you won't have to edit existing maps...

@Surf Solar: Special encounters are too rare. The player might never get that special encounter. I think the mod is okay as it is, and when I have the time (if that ever happens), I'll do many improvements.

@MaToX: Re-uploaded. This link is supposed to work for months. PM me if you have problems with the link.

Hey! I've been thinking... if you changed only the damage type and it's now effective... could it be possible to change the only the damage type of laser pistols/rifles but not the animations, damages, etc ?

That alone would make lasers worth it, and since plasma guns have higher damage anyway, scaling from lasers to plasma would still be worth it. Maybe change the damage type to fire? Right now only flamers have fire dam-type...

Yes, they will be effective this way. You can make your own mod with this change in just 5 minutes, if you use cubik2k's editor.

But there are already mods that balance the game (making the laser weapons useful). For example, Magnus's Weapons Redone. He reduces the laser resistance instead.

The main aim of this mod is the coolness of the Gatling Plasma - I personally love it, though I'm sure that many of you won't like it. The change of damage type matches its new description, it also adds some use to it - who needs a decorative weapon?

On the contrary, I already downloaded your mod and installed; I'm sure I'll love it ;)

Thanks for the tip on cubik's thingo, I will try it.
