Getting Started. Extract the tiles, entites and sprites etc.

Rogue Hex

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
I've just D/L the Tactics 1.27 patch and with it came an editor. Well, i was playing around and thought i would try my luck in mapping. I'd been testing with the FO2 mapper for somtime and wanted to try the Tactics one.

Anyway, i can't seem to find any tiles, when i select the tiles tab the list is empty. I tryed loading a set of tiles but i couldn't find any.

Is there a specific place i have to go to find the tiles?

Thanks for any help that you guys could possibly give me...

Thanks, somthing as simple as that and i couldn't even figure it out.
Is there a specific file that i should put them into or just anywhere in the Fallout Tactics folder?

extract them into the CORE directory and it should create the tile directory by itself. If it doesn't then you'll have tons of tiles in the same directory and that'll be a pain in the ass - and won't work properly.

I extracted them to where you said and it seems to work. I dont have tiles everywhere so i assume it worked correctly.
Thanks once again for your help on this.

Well, basically, load a map and if the tiles show up (since I gather you've not extracted sprites and entities?) then you extracted them correctly.

.TSE in Fallout Tactics Editor

I wanted to start creating maps with the editor (just getting started), but i couldn't find any tilesets.
I extracted TILES_0.BOS, but this only contains .TIL files, wich i don't seem to be able to load in the level editor.
I've read an older topic, from which i understood the tiles would load automaticly, but no matter what, the tile list remains empty. What do i do to get the tiles working ??

Ignore the button that says load tileset, you have to create the tileset first and need the tiles to be able to do so.

If you press F2 or click on the tiles selection you should see a directory list on the left hand side of the screen, keep opening one of the folders until you see a preview of the tiles. If you don't see a directory or there are no tiles you've extracted them to the wrong place.

The tiles should be extracted to the core directory so you have the folders core\tiles\BOS etc.

thx, it works now

Ok, it works now, the folder's name was Tiles_0, documentation doesn't mention this or anything, i should be able to get started now. thx alot

Next question: If i place tiles, and then save, they turn black. My guess is this has something to do with tilesets, but how do i save a tileset ? Or is this something else. On another note, is there nowhere a good tutorial to be found ?
Also, placing all the floor tiles is an awfull lot of work, but for a fill floor tileset, what tileset would this be ? It seems awkward to me to save a specific theme as a tileset, as i would use tiles from a lot of different themes. Any help on this one ?

This problem has nothing to do w/tilesets. The problem is that those tiles which have turned black are outside of the Camera Boundary. (Go to the "Level" tab and you will see the controls for changing it. It is detailed in the ReadMe file.)

Go to the main page of NMA and look at the drop-down menu for FoT. There you will see links to JJ86's section on FoT tutorials.

No idea. I've never worked w/Tilesets, probably because they are buggy. There is a file around somewhere to add the necessary quote marks to the TSE files so they actually work w/the editors, though.

I'd forget about the tilesets, for one thing the fill tileset option when you go File New doesn't appear to do anything and two all you really need to do is select a tile hold down shift and select some more tiles then drag the bounding box to cover an area. Which is basically what the tilesets do.

Tilesets are only really handy if you want to save that selection of tiles for reuse if you're doing a lot of mapping.

If you really want to play around with tilsets do a search at DaC, Red has posted a couple of times about how to set them up, but basically once you've selected your tiles as above hit the save tileset button. Then open the .tse file in notepad and add quotes to the begining and end of every line but the first.

Ok, i got the camera boundaries set, but i read on jj86's site about using a tileset with floor tilesas a fill, and that you could get very good results with it if you added some tiles with, for example when you're making a desert, rocks on it.
He said you could add the regular floor tiles multiple times so you get the ratio at which they were used right. I get all that, and that you can edit the file and remove the quotes seems simple to me.
Only problem is, when i select the tiles i wanna use for a floor fill, and then press the save tileset button, that button simply does nothing, so how the heck do i save a tileset ?

Under core\editor make a new directory called tilesets, select a tile in the preview window then holding down shift select the other tiles you want to use (above the window you'll notice it says 'selected for placement :' this will go up accordingly) then hit the save tilset button and it should prompt for you to give the .tse a filename. Then you can go and open the file in notepad and add the quotes etc.

I followed you're instructions, and i have a tileset that doesn't give any errors anymore (when selecting it as fill), but that damn fill doesn't do a thing. I checked the DaC forums, but there's just one forum with some news :?: if i do a search no posts of interest show up.

The fill tileset function has never done anything to my knowledge, as I said earlier tilesets are only really helpful if you plan on using them over and over. Otherwise just select the tiles as and when you want to use them.

I can assure you there's a lot more to the DaC forums than just the news. Probably Kreegle has limited viewing of the forums to registered members only.

Ok, well I can get around the fill tileset thing, just selecting and dragging.
But i've got some more questions (i know, more :?).
First, why is there no delete button ? i have to remove tiles by cutting them !!!
Secondly when i place two tiles with their bounding boxes exactly over each other they turn red, while the readme says this would replace the first one. It would be handy if i could place a more appropraite floor over the default one.
And last, how do i create doors ? I haven't found the sprites for them anywhere, not in tiles, nor in entities.
And thx for all the help i've been getting here.

Ctrl-Del to delete or Ctrl-Z to undo and Ctrl-Y to redo, but using Ctrl-X is okay and I think easier than Ctrl-Del. :)

Did you click somewhere else afterwards? Or save and exit, sometimes the red highlighting is slow to disappear, and sometimes it won't go away at all even if a tile or sprite is overlapping anymore. :(

The sprites are under sprites\doors, if you've unpacked them. :) Though unless you are making a destroyable door with, edited door sprites, you might as well use the existing door entities.

Hmm, okay i think i've got everything i need to know now, loading tilesets still doesn't work, but i'll live without it. Thx for everything :D
