God Fucking Damn It (or "Time Mistakes Make You Star Over" thread)

So, I'm sure we've all had our moments of spending so much time dedicated to a character, where suddenly something goes wrong, and we have to reload a much older save because fuck it, we don't wanna proceed any further with this mistake, right?

So whatever your tale, share it. Did you make this PERFECT game in FO2, only for the "too many items glitch" to screw up your save and force you to start all over from 2 ingame years back because you HAD to be sure the bug wasn't manifesting in the more recent saves? Did you go through all this trouble to avoid EVERY "free skill boost" until you spent all your points on a skill so that you'd save dozens of skill points, only to find out you can't get that item that gives you that free boost anymore, or the NPC who teaches you is gone, or you found a stockpile of skill books you couldn't use because your skills were too high now?

All kinds of fuck ups can happen, and sometimes- through mistakes on our parts in not making enough saves, or not planning ahead properly, or whatever -the only ways to resolve these fuck ups is to revert back to an older save. God it stings. But it can be the only way...

Recently, while playing FO2 with the RP installed, I was knocking out all the quests and unmarked opportunities without "wasting" any time, so I could use Buffout to beat Francis at arm wrestling then shovel shit at the caravan for a couple days while my stats dipped and recovered from the chem usage, and use skill books to advance the clock instead of waiting so I could do tasks while the shops were open, and use the time advancement to heal myself from the damage I took in the mine, and get the free refined uranium without needing to wait, etc etc... And I did EVERYTHING before I saw Bill to get the Expert Excrement Expeditor Perk, only to realize that now that Chad is in jail, I can't do any work for the caravan office. FUCK! Time to reload an older save.

Previously, before I found killap's patches, and I had to work with the game's official versions, I too suffered several lost games because of getting hit by the "too many items glitch" and not having enough saves to revert back to without losing... practically everything. So having to restart my travels in Broken Hills isn't THAT big of a deal next to having to start over from practically the beginning. But still..... God Fucking Damn It!

I managed to find the Geck and beat up Navarro as an unarmed stupid character, without using a single Mentat.

After I found the Geck I went to the Military Base and played tag with the Super Mutants for the Power armor. I then drove to Arroyo (I had tagged Repair so I had the car and installed the fuel injector myself) and got Hakunin's fantastic speech for stupid characters, and went to Navarro. I managed to piss off Chris so he put the whole base on alert, and I couldn't drop off my NPCs (Vic and Sulik) anyway, so it was killing time.

I had St, Ag and En at 10, Heavy Handed and Jinxed, all the three Bonus HtH Damage perks. A basic Haymaker did 30 damage, and I could land five of them a round with the Bonus HtH Attacks perk. We entered from the tunnel, and while my pals started shooting I ran to the quartermaster's office. I knew what was there. Then I had to fight the quartermaster of course, but he went down after a few criticals to the eyes.

Now I was suited up in Advanced Power Armor, and Vic had inherited my old one. By my calculations we had exactly two hours left to save the deathclaws from being genocided, so we went and killed Dr. Schreber (I used a Ripper for good sport) and the rest of his technicians.

Then we met Xarn. Since the base was on lockdown he couldn't escape, but he agreed to join us in fighting the rest of the base. I was excited, because I had modded Deathclaw attacks to play the "cut in half" animation when they kill someone with a critical hit, and I had also changed the Melee Damage stat to apply to the minimum as well as maximum damage. But I wasn't sure exactly how much melee damage Xarn had, or what his crit chance was.

We took the elevator upstairs. Funny how that animation looks on soldiers in Advanced Power Armor. But then he was stupid enough to run outside, and he simply had no chance against the Plasma Rifles and turrets waiting for him there. Xarn died a free Deathclaw.

I realized we were outnumbered here, so I headed back down the elevator, grabbing an HK G11E for Sulik along the way. We went to San Francisco snd struck a deal with Matthew from the BoS to go and fetch the vertibird plans. A few days later we returned to Navarro, with my buddies in Power Armor, a Gauss Rifle for Vic, Sulik with the HK G11E and a Mega Power Fist for myself. This was it. I pulled up at the gas station and saved the game.

I started up the game again, and tried to load the save. It didn't work. Previous save slot? Entering Vault 13.

Game Over.

Currently i make one save for each new location, and don't overwrite the previous one.

A thing that wasn't possible in the early 2000s in which the savegames, that where much bigger than the games, ate up all your hardrive memory.

Darion disappeared from the game during the battle at Vault 15 in Fallout 2, and I accidentally overwrote the save. I just couldn't handle getting the bad ending for both Vault 15 and the NCR.

Disappeared? Meaning he glitched? If that's the case, I wouldn't chalk that up to a "mistake" forcing you to start over, but that certainly is a pisser of a thing to happen that would ruin a save, regardless.

Before I became much more educated on the warning signs of various infamous bugs in FO2 (or before I started using unofficial patches to fix it), I would see the symptoms of the dreaded "too many items" bug, but kept on playing, overwriting the same save going deeper and deeper into the game, essentially dooming that save. I remember I reached San Francisco, and as soon as I entered the town, the bug was triggered. My game would crash the moment I'd try to change the map. So once I moved to the docks to get some errands done, game crashed. Tried again, game crashed. After a couple more failures, I tried to leave the city, game crashed. Once I realized my game would crash NO MATTER where I went, and that I'd saved once I entered the town, I was devastated, realizing this entire save was no good anymore. I can't recall how much progress I lost, but that memory sticks out in my mind for very good reason. So it was probably a LOT, and I was probably depressed over it for a couple days... T_T

In my most recent playthrough I forgot entirely that I'd lowered the timer for the supermutant attacks in Fallout Fixt to half. I wasted too much time after getting the water chip and the muties ended up overrunning all of the settlements and then Vault 13 whilst I was trying to walk toward Mariposa.

I was doing so well, too.

Yep. He walked into the bathroom-type area of the Vault, and when I tried to find him he had glitched out of the game. Strange, since I've never seen anyone else have that bug. Oh the horror when I realized that I overwrote the save I made at the start of the fight...

In a sense, that part was my mistake.

I can't think of something specific right now -but I sssuck at saving. It's such a LAME thing to suck at... I keep telling myself, I will even chant it to myself, I'll be all "save, save, save! save, save, save! save-save-save-save, save-save-save-save, save, save, saaave!" too busy chanting, forgets to save, rants at myself "Refuses to save! That's it! It's a refusal to save game! Asshole!"

I'll demonstratively save every 3 seconds, untill I get tired of being demonstrative towards myself, so I chill it, forget to save, reload an ancient save, and then chant at myself "save, save, save - save, save, save!"

this happens to me all the time. usually after doing a fuckton of fetch missions and other meaningless tasks (running back and forth in town, talking and trading to get ready to go out) and my previous save is before i even got into the town. it's super frustrating
