GRA Challenge: "Talk About Owned"

So I've been replaying the game again for a little while. This following an involuntary break from the game because of computer issues, and I wanted to play it again to "completion" one more time before I modded the utter-living-fuck out of it. I also wanted to get the Achievements I still had lying around out of the way, which brought me to the GRA Challenges.

I'm not yet at the point where I'm dedicating myself to completing the various GRA Challenges; I work on those that I can, if and when opportunities present themselves, as I go. One I had my eye on was "Talk About Owned" (killing Benny with Maria, his own handgun), at which this I've made a couple leisurely attempts- since I'm siding with NCR this time around, I'm under no obligation, and thus in no rush, to reclaim the Platinum Chip, and/or do a damn thing about Benny. Most of my attempts ended in complete and utter failure, and a few went less-than-promisingly. So I was curious, how did others beat this challenge?

Taking a Sneaky approach without having said anything to any NPC, I'm able to attempt a pickpocket of Maria off of Benny, but out of the scores of tries I've made, none of them have worked. I had 60 Sneak that I boosted to 80 with a Magazine, and I even used a Stealth Boy on at least one attempt. I still failed every time. My most successful, if least graceful, attempt involved getting Benny set up for his fall with the help of Swank, and then when I confronted him, I just shit the shit out of his weapon in VATS in the hopes that it would drop and break at the same time, then pick it up and repair it before finishing him off. But it was such a waste of the weapon's perfect condition at which you'd normally acquire it, so I was hoping there would be a better way to get it. I was going to try using Boxing Gloves and seeing if I could pry it off of Benny with a potential knock-out, but I've never used skills/items with KO properties, so I don't even know how that'll affect my attempts. While it would be a very easy out, I'm not going to use console commands to make my very own Maria for this.

So yeah, what'd those of you who beat this challenge do to get the job done?
 
I think pickpocketing is fairly chancey regardless of your skill level. Try taking it off of him while he's sleeping? Could always just accomplish it with the console.
 
I'm guessing you didn't read my post. Like I already said: not gonna cheat with console. (That defeats the purpose of the Challenge.)

It's also incredibly difficult to steal it when he's sleeping, considering this is Benny; he DOESN'T sleep. He's programmed to just be in one of four places: The Tops floor where you can confront him, the Presidential Suite if you can talk him into joining you there, his room if you get Swank to help you assassinate him, and The Fort if you scare him away at any of the previous three.

I already said I COULD get it, I just didn't like the method. I'm not asking for "help", per se, as much as I'm curious how OTHERS accomplished it, themselves. I appreciate that you're trying to be helpful, but it sounds like you're just theorycrafting and that you hadn't gotten it yourself. =/

NCR isn't going to Ceasar's camp.

I don't really care about achievements but I would keep trying along the lines of your second theory. To knock him out and steal it that way. I think there are poison darts or something like that you can craft to do the job. Or maybe that was part of a modded game.
 
There are plenty of chances to go to the Fort, and is even required in one of the NCR missions iirc. Only sided with them my first playthrough though so I'm not 100% sure if the whole thing with benny still works out the same or not, hence the phrasing it as a question
 
I just shot it out of his hand on the casino floor, picked it up, repaired it a bit and kept it.

He ran off and I saw him again at Caesars camp.

I was able to sneak pistols past the guards, so I was able to shoot benny with maria while he was all tied up.
 
Have sex with him then steal it while he is sleeping. Bet your not a female though huh? I do believe you can't steal off him while he is knocked out though. Off anybody actually.
 
Yeah, after repeated blows to the face (when i tried using the "knock out method") Benny FINALLY went down- the jaw on that fucker! -and I couldn't loot him. But I could shoot Maria, and after a couple bullets, it fell to the ground, useable but heavily damaged. It wasn't much better than my previous attempts, although needless to say I at least ACCOMPLISHED the challenge whereas every time I'd fail a pickpocket that was the end of that attempt.
 
From what I understand, pickpocket only derives its score from your native stealth skill - the boost from stealthboy is only for detection. I believe it took me more than a hundred reloads to pickpocket maria off of him, but I was successful eventually, with 100 stealth after reading a magazine.

Congrats on completing the challenge, though. Shooting it out of his hand is innovative.
