Help me make a copypasta

The Suave Gambler

First time out of the vault
I come from a forum where the discussion (mostly by non-Americans) of a Fallout set in another country "would be cool" while the intelligent people keep telling them why that stupid.

I already know that there was no Vaults built outside of the US because Vault Tec is a US Government contracted agency and all, but I need a few sources to cite whenever this discussion happens again so it can be ended quickly so we can move on.

Maybe a few pages in the Fallout Bible the specifically talk about the status of the European Commonwealths and Australia and why there is nothing interesting there.

The problem here, to me, is that Fallout is by nature a throwback to Cold War fears and that era's style of futurism/science-fiction. It would be rather bizarre to transplant that to another country, since that tone and setting is so distinctly American.

So basically, to effectively change the setting to another part of the world, it would need to do away with a lot of that, which doesn't make much sense because so much about the Fallout setting is tied into that American Cold War futurism. So... I would say it's possible to make a game similar to Fallout that takes place in another country or culture, but not one in the same fictional universe or with the same tone or style.

Check out European Commonwealth, a total conversion for Fallout 2 made by some of my fellow countrymen. (You should find more informations in french at fallout-3.com )

Fallout makes non sense in Europe etc. because they had a long war before Great War.

European Commonwealths and Australia and why there is nothing interesting there.
Yep, there is clearly nothing, everything was destroyed. No power armors, no great technology, no super mutants, no vaults, then no Fallout. ; )

God forbid there be no super mutants and BoS in a fallout game. Bethesda would have a heart attack at the thought!

I agree with every single word you've typed there. I have typed the same thing more than once in different places and it's nice to see there are other people that think about it the same way.

Also, the simple logistics and physics come into play, regarding the possibility of a Fallout setting outside of North America. The Lore never explicitly stated, but heavily, directly implied, that the only countries that were ATTACKED by nukes were China and the United States. They were therefore the only places geographically LEVELED to the ground. The rest of the planet's population was killed off by the roving fallout (hence the name) particles that are highly mobile, and highly toxic to human beings. This was basically a recount of what happened after the Chernobyl Meltdown; the radiation exposure was limited to the area around the meltdown, but the radioactive fallout was carried into the air and swept ALL OVER Europe, causing birth defects, death, and long-term cancer, etc. Many different sources corroborated that this was the case, in the Fallout Universe, be they Skynet, the Fallout Bible, or New Vegas.

In short, the only places with DESTROYED cities (and thus, an "appropriate" post-apocalyptic setting) were just China and the US. Not just the Cold War themes, but the desolate, dangerous, destroyed locations were all vital backdrops to Fallout, and you would find NONE of these, in other locations.

Not true.
"October 23: The Great War begins and ends lasting only a scant 2 hours. Most of Earth is reduced to cinders in that time."
Most of Earth, not most of USA and China.

This could be interesting to set in a place like Egypt who played both sides to get more foreign aid

Egypt? Why Egypt? seems like the most Random location ever for Fallout.

A harsh division between COMINTERN and Western influence could make for interesting shaping in Fallout. Kind of like those Chinese Remnants in FO3 on steroids

"Like" those Chinese Remnants from FO3 in that they were absurd, out of place, and basically another generic enemy with no point or purpose but another skin to make them look unique?

Na, we've got plenty of those. The less random crap thrown into the Fallout world for the sake of "Why not?" which has nothing to do with Fallout besides the name being slapped on, the better.

No.

I want to fight post apocalyptic Communists.

Your argument is invalid.

Well, it's got a desert, for one.

And if you retconned Aswan Dam out of existence, it would actually be fun after a fashion to see a bombed-into-the-past Egypt, where the Nile is no longer the life-giver, but rather a harbinger of fallout and radioactive mud flushed from the heart of the continent.

Not that it would make for a "genuine Fallout" setting, but certainly an interesting tie-in.

I don't know why so many hardcore FO fans are against FO in another country.

Depending on the country, you could still get a 'cold war' feel--make it take place in Russia, or one of the US allies, or Russian allies--all of whom I am sure were just as nervouse about a nuclear war breaking out between the US and Russia as we Americans were!

And so what if there aren't any leveled buildings (though I think there is evidence to the contrary in statements made by various FO characters); it could be very interesting to walk through a city that isn't destroyed but completely desolate; talk about a 'ghosty' atmosphere....

I'd be for it, IF it were done right. I do agree about not throwing stuff in just for the sake of doing it, but if it can make a real contribution to the FO series, give more insight into the story, and be done in a meaningful way, then I say have at it.

To up the ante on Cold War, I think about something like this-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_holdout

These guys have no idea whether or not the COMINTERN was destroyed in the apocalypse. While preserving the few remaining copies of the Communist Manifesto and preaching Stakhonovism, they continue to radio Moscow and Beijing in hopes of building Socialism from the wastes.

It could make a great set of characters and storylines
