Heroes of Might and Magic

God of Blood and War
So, I'm thinking of getting into the whole Heroes of Might and Magic thing after seeing a review for Might and Magic Heroes VII, but obviously, since it's such an unfinished mess I think I'd be better off starting with one of the other instalments of the series. I'm sort of tied between going with Heroes V or VI, but I'm not sure which is actually best. I might go back in time even further, but I'm not so much into retro gaming unless it's for nostalgic reasons. Gameplay mechanics seemed so much more clunky back in the 90's, and I don't know if I would want to go back to that sort of thing.

I'm guessing some people in this place are familiar with the franchise and could probably help me decide which game I should start with, and which ones I should avoid.

I have no experience whatsoever with the series, so if I'm getting into it, there'd better be a tutorial in the game, or at least some pointers (which was something VII seemed to completely lack, even TotalBiscuit, someone who's played all of the instalments of the series couldn't figure certain things out).

So, please, help me out, I think I could really enjoy this series. :D

I played the shit out of HoMM 3 in my youth. Hot seat with a friend or two was the shit. Also played a helluva lot of IV. 3 seems to be the universally most liked in the series. It might look old, but the gameplay hasn't exactly changed much over the years. I'd say try it out if you're curious. I really liked IV as well, but that's the "black sheep" of the series I guess. Most fans don't seem to like it. I enjoyed that it was a bit of a change from 3, and it had a cool class system for your heroes. I also played V a lot and I really liked that one. It felt like playing 3 but with pretty good graphics. Didn't play any of the latter, but from what I gather VI is pretty decent.

I think I'll be playing IV and V then. I'm not too worried about IV being the black sheep of the series. From what I've heard the fanbase is pretty conservative and don't like change. I'm not one of those people. :)

I've played the HoMM series since the first game, but mostly always for the hotseat matches and never really for the campaigns. I suppose a good starting point for the series would be 2 or 3 (3 being the best of the series still) and moving onwards from there and witnessing how the series evolves game by game.

Start with HoMM3. It's the most "HoMM" game of the series where (almost) everything is really well balanced. Don't go with the new HD Enhanced Edition or some shit, better get the one from GoG.

Basically first 5 games are okay (I haven't played the rest), but this one is the best. II is also great.
V was made by a different team altogether (akin to Bethesda making Fallout), but they mostly pulled it off. Still, NWC HoMM games are the way to go.

yeah I concur, play 3 and use WoG it improves a lot of elements in the game :)

I think 4 is too much of a different experience to be a good introduction to the series.
If you really don't wanna play 3 for some reason, then start with 5 as it is more standard. I haven't played the ones after 5 either, so don't know about them.
But seriously, just get 3 off of GoG. It's pretty much the pinnacle of HoMM like Atomkilla said.

I think that HoMM2 is highly underrated! HoMM3 is fun, multi-player sessions especially, single player campaign suck though.

I started with HoMM 2 and i loved it, but the 3d one is better in a lot of ways TBH.
I never got into the first game. Only did a few matches with my friends.
The 4th one had the problem of taking so much time for each map. Even on the biggest maps in HoMM 3 we would not spend the next 2-3 days playing at my friends house as we did in HoMM 4.
Only tried one of the newer ones but can't remember wich.

You guys are making me feel like dusting off my HoMM 3 CDs and install it. I haven't played it for many years (to be honest I love the game but I suck at playing it).

Now I wonder if the game will run on this machine (it should, but this machine is malfunctioning and shuts off from time to time). I also wonder if I broght the CDs with me when I moved to Australia... Will have to check my Computer games shelves...
