How did you discover Fallout ?

i was 8 or 9, we had moved to california to help take care of my grandpa who had a stroke. i don't remember why but my dad and i returned a year or so later to where we used to live. i visited one of my best friends for a few days and he showed me fallout, which a neighbor kid showed him. he and i used to play a lot of single player games 'together', where we'd take turns and watch. in doom one of us would control the shooting and opening of doors and the other would move around. good times.

first memory i really have of it is just, 'you can shoot them anywhere? you can shoot them in the groin?!' and shooting the guy who was holding the girl hostage in the hotel in junktown with a shotgun. i remember the load times being god awful. i remember him excitedly telling his mom he found the water chip.

after reading this, i realized this was the last experiences he and i had hanging out as best friends. i visited him again years later, but we had grown so far apart that the interaction was awkward, we were different people and the shock was massive.

soon as i got back home to california i convinced my parents to buy it for me. i played it over and over, i really loved that game. when i heard about fallout 2 i lurked the forums all day every day and would post idiotic 10 year old kid ideas to add to fallout 2, and the devs always being polite in turning down my brilliance. one was a gun which would shoot bullets that were filled with space air, so it'd turn the person inside out when you shot them. yeah, even as a 10 year old i was pretty dumb.

i was living in a place i hated, and fallout was my main escape. it was rough going from having some of the best friends you could imagine and a beautiful island full of adventures to a hot, hostile place full of assholes. i wasn't used to the meanness, so i made few friends and kept mostly to my computer. i loved many games before fallout, but i believe fallout was my 'gateway game' in terms of using games to escape reality on a regular basis.

just about as true to the word love can be, i really loved the two fallout games. playing them really developed my abilities in reading, since the description were always so mesmerizing. it wasn't a game that just fed you images, it left the scenes to be created in your own mind. i think this is more powerful than any advanced graphics, sometimes it's completely awe inspiring when you see some giant world in front of you, but after a while it gets boring just being spoon fed this imaginary land.

fallout never got boring, and i still get lost dreaming of the wasteland.

I wouldn't be surprised if something like that appears in some shooter, to be honest...



Also, nice story. I can relate to some parts of it, in a way.
 
I haven't posted here in a while. Its been years.

My friend gave me a copy of Fallout 2, it was a copy of a copy.

I played it a lot. I loved it. Its like video game crack. Seriously.

I consider it the best game ever made. If I was the type who considered games to be art. Fallout 1 and 2 are pure art in video game form.

I also just started playing New Vegas. I am not real impressed.

Its what made me come back. I need the patched because I might be playing Fallout 1 and 2 again. :)

In my opinion Fallout 1 and 2 do a lot more than FO3 or Ne Vegas. I mean like you said you need to use your imagination. Like you do with books. Fallout 1 and 2 had way more than graphics. Though I do like the way Fallout 1 and 2 look graphically. It reminds me of an old comic book. It has its own style. Also you can play it on any computer. NV and FO3? Not so much. They have high demands.
 
I was staying at my friend's house for a while, and he was playing this post-apocalypse game where you run around and get into battles, then die, then reload, then get in more battles and die again. It looked boring, but there were a couple of funny jokes in it(I remember he showed me how he was using healing items on someone he referred to as "the president" to kill him) and I could appreciate some of the humour at least. Fallout 3 came out not long after, and I liked the wacky wasteland thing it had going. I also met my wife online around this time, and we bonded over our mutual love of the game. A while later New Vegas came out, and it was set in a brown desert, and didn't seem to be as goofy, and I dressed in an NCR uniform and got in a fight with some Roman Legionaries or some shit which I was too low level to win. I turned the game off, disappointed.
Fast forward to March 2012, and the hilarious turd which was Mass Effect 3's ending. In the vitriolic online discussions of it I kept seeing a game come up, over and over again: Alpha Protocol. The impression I got was that it was like Mass Effect, with better "choice/consequence" stuff, made by Obsidian. I knew them already from KOTOR2, which I absolutely adored, but I'd never checked out any of their other games. Tried Alpha Protocol and had a blast. I remembered New Vegas, and figured that it had earned another chance based on the two other games I'd played by that developer. Something clicked that hadn't before, and I grabbed the dLC and started over as soon as the credits rolled. Reasoning that maybe now I was in the right frame of mind to enjoy the originals, I nabbed Fallout 1 while it was being given away for free at gog.com, and bought Fallout 2 while I was there. Sadly, the computer I had couldn't play them without overheating (it couldn't run fucking Microsoft Word without overheating, the piece of shit). In February this year I finally got a new computer, and the first thing I did was to install and play Fallout 1. All of a sudden, Fallout 3 metamorphosed from one of my favourite games into some puerile and idiotic fanfiction which no more grasped the universe it was trying to insert itself into than a Hans Von Hozel story. I have the Game Of The Year edition with all the dLC I've only seen parts of, but I don't know if I'll ever feel motivated enough to play it. This is kind of a shame, but thankfully my opinion of New Vegas was unaffected by playing the originals, so I'll just play that instead. :D
 
I first found out about Fallout from a friend - I played Fallout 2 first, then eventually got to the first game. Never liked the newer games, though with upgraded visuals and a wonderful soundtrack, I put up with it :)
 
My first Fallout was Fallout 3 but I didn't care for the story so I sold it to Gamestop just a few days after my purchase. When I heard about New Vegas I thought I'd give the series another try and I absolutely adore it now.

Did you end up feeling prompted to seek out the originals and either obtain physical copies or download them to experience them, thus appreciate the series more fully? Or do you just adore the series because of New Vegas? =)
 
I was no older than 6, when my father purchased some magazine, where they actually included full version of original Fallout (I'm pretty sure I still have the CD somewhere). I didn't know English back then, and I could barely read anything, so I had no freaking clue what I was doing. Still though, I had a great time. I think. Few years later, I found said CD when I was looking for some old RPGs, and I decided to install it. I adore the series ever since...
 
I got a fallout 2 demo from some computer magazine when I was a kid. It was many years later when I bought Fallout 1 & 2.
 
It was in September of 2001 when I ventured beyond the safety of my Vault in the search of a new game to play. I encountered a F1+2 bundle at a merchant tradepost, and remembered reading some good reviews about it a few years back when F1 came out. I decided it was time for further investigation.

I started with F2, and loved it once I got past that temple of trials, it was the day of the terrorist attack on the twin towers a.k.a. 9/11.
My next stop was the den, where I could spend aunt Morlis' savings on jet and loosing my virginity - jolly good times!

Since back then it's among my favouties, and I enjoy replaying every now and then, especially due to this immortal fan community still creating patches and great content mods!
 
I first played Fallout (1) when my uncle loaded it up & I asked to play; even though I was about 6 way-back then, he let me.

Man, that was a LONG time ago come to think of it.

Got both games from PC Gamer here in Sweden. Still got at leat the number with F1 around here somewhere.
 
When I was 12, my older a brother had a burned CD with 20 games or so, packed on one CD, all english and highly compressed.

Fallout 2 was one of it. As a young lad with with just rudimentary english knowledge I started playing this game and loved it. I only made it to modoc or so and didnt really get the story :mrgreen:

Also the game missed all the video files, so no vault suit cutscene - means no vault suit for the player.
Wasnt that bad, except there are missing certain shooting animation for the tribal skin, and so the game regularly crashed when equipping certain weapons.
A few years later I bought a full version of the game with the gold games bundle, downloaded a giant blood patch via 56k and eventually ordered an UK version :crazy:
Have played it soo many times since then :nuclear:

Fallout 1 came a bit later, and wasteland I just played thru with the kickstarter of part2
 
When I was young, I went over to my friends house and he had Fallout on his computer, we played it for a while and had a great time. We didn't really know what to do because we were just kids, so we ended up just killing people and doing a few quests. I ended up buying 1 and 2 and playing the hell outta' them, been a fan ever since.
 
Back in 2001 I got my first more-or-less modern PC so I went with my friend to buy some games for it. He suggested me buying FO1 and/or FO2, so I bought both of them. I think those CDs were pirated, but since then I've bought both games on Steam. Eventually, I played FOT and later FO3 and FNV. I even played FOBOS about a year ago when I borrowed PS2 from my co-worker. :)
 
Many years of Fallout.

Have been Playing Fallout For a Very long time now. Started with Fallout 1, and still continuing to play it.
