How Gearbox ruined Homeworld.

Its late 1999, and gaming is still developing (Regressing).

RTS is dominated in games such as Command and Conquer, and Starcraft.

Both feature relatively simplistic unit models/sprites, have mostly 'histcan' weaponry, and overall are simple, abeit fun, games.

Notably, neither have a 3d world, or advanced tactics other than kiting and 'eco'.

Then enter Homeworld...

Featuring 3d ships, in a 3d world, with almost all the weapons being physical projectile shooting guns, with tactics as far as the eye can see.

From basic flanking, to hyperspacing in a frigate wall behind enemies, to using probes as kamikaze drones, there are simply too many ways to fight than I can list.

Its like comparing some mediocre IOS game to an AAA masterpiece. (Starcraft 1 was a fucking awesome game though...For its time)

Some time passes, and its expansion, Cataclysm was released.

Cataclysm, what is basically a 'horror' RTS (amazingly it succeeds at this in many missions), was met with some mixed reviews.

Some didn't like the story, some didn't like the new mechanics, but the big fans of the original game, mostly rated it a 9/10, or just under the original's score.

I personally loved the game, it added a literal entire fleet of unique new units, a new antagonist which seems feesible in a sci-fi world (Before sci fi virus monsters were bland), and LOVELY voice acting.

No seriously, you have to watch this...

...Ahem...

Now, some time passes, and there is no sequel.

Fans await, and finally its announced! Homeworld 2!

It releases...And...Its not pretty...

It looks lovely.

The fleets and ships look nice. (A bit too...Generic though...The originals had this nice gritty simplistic look to them, at least for the Kushan fleet)

But...That's all of the good parts.

The story? Garbage.

The mechanics? Everything is decided by RNG. Your ships cannot hit a non-moving fighter because the dice tells them they can't...

Even balance went from 'minor asymetric forces' to 'both fleets are radically different', which resulted in serious imbalance and metas forming.

I won't get too much into homeworld 2, its a mediocre game at best, and a shitty one at worst.

Its not unplayable...

Actually, it nearly is.

The enemy force scaling, which was in Homeworld 1 to a minor degree (VERY MINOR), has been inflated to a stupid degree.

Expect enemies to have several times your unit cap in their biggest ships, which turns 5 minute missions into 40 minutes of spamming ships in hope they don't blow your mother ship to pieces before you can stop them.

Then there is silence again...And fans await someone to actually put effort into the franchise...

I won't get into the "Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak" game, that was basically a homeworld themed game shoehorned into homeworld because Gearbox said they could.

Finally Gearbox, who bought the IP, speaks up!

Homeworld "Remastered", the games made to run on modern OS's! (nevermind that the originals work on modern OS's with some tinkering...Jeese)

With modern graphics! Oh yes it'd look lovely! (Ironically, I find the remastered Homeworld 1 ships to be fugly...The original models, as simple as they were, didn't look like they were warped creations in pain...)

We wait, and it is released!

And its dogshit, just the type of thing modern gamers (Drones) love to consume.

LAN has been ripped from the original homeworld, so now its internet connection and or get the fuck out.

The remastered versions? You'd think that an already created game, simply given a new coat of paint, would run better, right? More polish and spit?

Someone accidentally mixed 'new paintjob' with 'put some glitter on the game, then smear shit on it'.

There are more bugs than the originals! Which were a little buggy to begin with!

In the original (1st game), there was no RNG, and there was formations and tactics.

I'll post this video which will explain a lot.

Admittedly, the game has been patched a lot since then, and while I appreciate that they actually are putting effort into the game, their blatant laziness and disregard of the franchise is obvious, they released a steaming pile of shit, took the money and went 'trust us, we'll fix it'.

With remastered, Gearbox has gotten a lot of hate, and even more praise.

Who on earth trusts the company which made both Aliens Colonial Marines, AND Duke Nukem forever? Its obvious they only care about their own franchises, which they are now making shittier by the number (jesus the preorders are getting more and more cancerous).

I am a fanatic with Homeworld, and while I don't mind people not liking the game, anyone who threatens its future might as well be burned at the stake for all I care.

I might as well post some more shit which remastered messed up...

-Broken corvette AI literally coped from Homeworld 2's corvettes
-Kadesh swarmers being harmless, instead of the super-fighters they were
-Kadesh needle ships no longer firing Ion beams, or ramming ships
-Frigates being armoured with paper (Also copied directly from HW2)
-Weird rebalances which makes no sense, considering HW1 was perfectly fine
-Cap on salvage corvettes (They were admittedly OP in the original, but it was up to the player to use them, nor did they always work, sometimes the AI shot them down like flies, but hey, lets remove player freedom, because fuck the players, right?)
-Countless script issues because they again just copied shit with the HW2 engine
-Making HW1 races fight HW2 races...Why?...There's 120 years of tech advancement between the two...And 1's ships were fucking way more huge (HW 1's mothership was 20km tall, HW2's was more like 2-4, IIRC)

I'm a pretty big C&C fan, well used to be back in the day. I should really get back to playing them.

Been playing Red Alert 1-2 recently, very simple games, but very fun, and significantly nicer voice acting/audio than say, Starcraft 1-2.

Shame EA buttfucked that series into a grave.

C&C Generals: Zero Hour is still one of the games I keep coming back to, have been playing it for years. Same with Age of Empires 3.

I adore Generals, it's probably my favourite C&C game.

As for Age of Empires... I really need to play them.

I share that sentiment :-(.

The worst part?

EA is ENTIRELY to blame from that.

They purposely made C&C4 a piece of shit, just so they could sack the developers, and go "Whoops, they did a bad job, tee hee hee, sorry we can't make Generals 2, but hey, here's a free to play C&C instead, you love those, right?"

Pretty much this is what I think happened (and a few sites seem to indicate this was the case).

I wonder if smaller game dev studios nowadays actually dread receiving an offer from EA. Like when the offer arrives, they may think; "We do need the money and capital to develop more but... we may have to suffer a lot and if they don't care for us, they'll hang us to dry."

What makes it overrated?

"Hitscan" weapons (Marines don't actually have machineguns...They just sound and look like them, contrast to say, Dawn Of War's bolters which are per bullet), pretty mediocre graphics (sorry, they really are kinda bad...At release they weren't bad though, but look at World in Conflict), pretty bad sound/death/animation/etc effects.

Its not a bad game.

But people treat it like the god of RTS, when it is mediocre in many many ways.

oh, understandable. I consider SC2 as a...stepping stone to more hardcore RTS (Fucking Dawn of War series, man), though not the very beginning stepping stone, that would belong to..fucking Halo Wars and we all know how shit and unbalanced that game was (fucking rush hogs ftw amirite?)
