How Power Armour Should've Worked

M-26-7

Still Mildly Glowing
Now I understand that Bethesda was trying to stop the "power Armour Rush", which could've been done in many ways, but they chose not to let you use it till a certain point in your game. They also sort of nerfed Power Armour in general by making it have agility penalties. This pisses me off because I have power armour for a long time now, but I've never gotten around to heading over to Vault 112. I really don't give a shit about Liam James Neeson and I'd rather just wander around.

Instead power armour training should have been more of a bonus than anything else. Remember in the old games how you coul use any weapon regardless of your skill? For instance you might not have enough strength to use a gun effectively, but you could still use albeit with certain penalties applied. The same should've been applied to armour. You can put it on, but maybe you get that Agi. penalty and a fw other things. Or you don't get as much of a strength bonus. Then when you get the training you learn how to use the full power armour capablities and how to move in the hulking thing and the penalties vanish and you get the full perks of wearing the suit.

Actually, I have been meaning to tell people about this.

This will involve a spoiler but will show you that you can finish the game in around 3-4 hours with power armor training etc.

[spoiler:04b872ca9e]I haven't properly checked all the possibility's, but as soon as you leave vault 101, if you know the location where the vault which has your father stuck in tranquility lane, you can run right too it and continue the story from there.

I'll test this out a bit more, or if you could try for me. [/spoiler:04b872ca9e]

I think the Power Armor Training perk is a fine idea. The fact that you can only get it at a set point in the main questline is bullshit.

The problem is not with how the perk works and I don't think making power armor training just an upgrade is the best solution. Instead, there should be a variety of options to get it so you could get it in more ways than just from the BoS in the main questline. For example, trading one suit to the Outcasts for training on how to use it, or finding instructions on a holodisc in the National Guard Depot (or Fort Constantine, or wherever)

I agree with Brother None.

But frankly, armor progression in Fallout 3 is kinda of screwed up. Here's how I did:

Vault Suit
That one vault suit the security forces use
Armored Vault Suit Moira gives me for free for no reason
Talon Company Combat Armor
Ranger Combat Armor (still using it)

The Armored Vault Suit can take so much punishment that, by the time you HAVE to switch it, you probrably killed enough Talon Company mercenaries to switch to their armor. Well, I tagged repair. I think armor progression would be slightly better for those without repair tagged, but still... those repairmen are so useless and unskilled it's just better to repair stuff yourself.

EDIT: Power Armor sucks. Enclave soldiers were taken down by Combat Shotgun shots. Ridiculous.

I didn't tag repair and my armour progression was basically the same. Vault stuff, Talon armour (I met three of them very early in the game) and then combat armour.

Yeah, that sucks. A shotgun, combat or otherwise, wouldn't even scratch a power-armoured guy in Fallout 1+2. No chance in hell.

I thought that the powerarmor is pretty much useless. By the time I got it ingame I almost finished the game.

Also, why do helmets keep constantly breaking down? I keeped repairing the damn helmet only to have them go kaputt again after the next fight? Bugged?

Yeah I didn't like how you don't fell like tank a anymore.

In the old ones you only had to worry about was a crit rocket to the eyes. Other then that Bullets would ping right off you.

Though in this, the T-51b makes you fell like a juggernaut for bit.(Even more so since I had all the +DR perks) After a while it starts breaking down and you can never get it back to tip top shape.

Enclave power armor @100% DR 40
ranger combat armor @100% DR 40 +stuff

but Encalve`s seem to be more durable. and looks cooler

BoS power armor is pos and I didnt find enough of them to repair to 100%

Anyway power armor is so weak - another example of Beth failure to balance the game properly

Slaughter is right - no proper progression. and pretty much the same with guns.

I'd like a mod that eliminates the ability to pick up armor off every single enemy you kill, as well as reducing the damage different armors take depending on the TYPE of armor. Eg, Power Armor only needing repair once every 4000 rounds.. etc.

Except that power armor is the very idea of video game lack of balance.
Getting rid of it altogether would have "helped balance" the game.

The problem is that you get Power Armor pretty damn early in the main quest after the battle in the Galaxy News Radio Station. That is the true reason for the Power Armor Training special perk. What I think is ABSOLUTELY BIZARRE, is the fact that you can loot the bodies of BOS soldiers and nobody will care. Or bat a eyelid. Or tell you to go the fuck away from their dead comrades, you fifthy scavenger. Or shoot at you for merely LOOKING at their sacred Power Armor. Fifthy wastelander scavenger motherfucker.

When I was walking with Lyons and her buddies on the way to GNR, we found that dead BOS guy. He had Power Armor and a helmet nearby. I stole anything he had without any comment by the nearby BOS members. I am not kidding. Power Armor is the best armor (ot it should be) the best armor in the wasteland, and yet, I can steal it in their faces. I can't simply imagine this happening in the old Fallouts. The brotherhood I know would give me a stern warning to get the hell away from their precious holy armor. It only gets even more ridiculous after the battle in Galaxy News Radio Station, where there are four dead brotherhood paladins and I looted their Power Armors while a bunch of BOS soldiers were nearby and looking at my direction at the same time. Do they get blind with those helmets or something? I wanted to scream "HEY YOUR FUCKERS I AM STEALING POWER ARMOR, RARE POWER ARMOR IN YOUR FACES! COME YELL AT ME OR SOMETHING, AREN'T YOU GUYS THE BROTHERHOOD?!!!1111"

As for not feeling like a walking man-tank, yeah, that's the problem with Power Armor in Fallout 3. You feel like you just added more protection and there, that's it. Really. The problem is that damage resistant is only determined by DR. That's it. No Damage Thresholds, no DIFERENT damage kinds (really, bullets = lasers = plasma = explosion = flame. At least for armor matters, it is all the same shit). And there is nothing like different bullet types IE JHP and AP bullets. Dumbing down at it's best, folks.

This only proves how armor progress is fucked up in the game. And how Beth does not pay atention to certain obvious details.

you sir, are so right :D
but I suppose that some modding will be able to fix this right?
On death (of a BOS char), looting the corpse = stealing:
result => BOS hate you ^^
and seeming you won't survive an assault by them...
oh well, I like Beth more than EA though

Im not sure there was anything preventing you from looting someones` dead comrades in Fo1/2. Cant recall a single case.
I guess Beth could make it equal to "stealing" in the presence of other BoS guys. Makes sense and not that hard to implement, but then you`d still be able to sneak and take all you want when no one`s looking. And at GNR you are supposed to fight on BoS` side (there is even a daft message - go take FatMan from a dead body - kinda cheap)

As for man-tank... do you really need to be a mantank when lategame enemies posess no threat? Its the overall balance issue. You absoluely need powerfull weapons and good armor to fight late game enemies in Fo2. In Fo3 you can one-shot killl enclave soldiers with a mid-game weapon like magnum and their plasma rifles wont burn you in 1 shot even if you wear some riders` junk armor :?

edit: there is 2-piece tesla armor which gives 40+42 dr for an ultimate protection

Only problem I had with the perk is that everyone can wear the armour except you. Your companions can and you also come across raiders wearing looted armour from an Enclave outpost.
I feel really put upon being the only person in the wasteland who can't wear it. (so I cheated :P )

Yes, I agree. But if I am wearing Power Armor and, by extension, being a man-tank, they should also be Man-Tanks, too. This was how it worked in Fallout 2: By the end game, you have a group of people in Power Armor. Your enemies also have Power Armor. And everyone is armed with furutist ray guns or gauss rifles or the like. And all those weapons were created to deal with man-tanks. And combats play out like a battle between two groups of man-tanks with futuristic zap guns should play out. And all is right in the world.

In Fallout 3, nobody feels like a man-tank in Power Armor. The Enclave soldiers surely aren't man tanks, what with dying with Combat Shotgun shots. And they are single shots. You aren't a man-tank. Combats don't play out like a firefight between man-tanks with advanced weaponry, it plays out like a firefight between a guy with weak weapon killing guys who have paper mache power and weak plasma rifles that won't melt your stupid combat armor wearing ass in one shot.

I remember in FOT that it was possible to die from Pancor Jackhammer bursts even in Power Armor, but only if the shooter used slugs (which are made for penetration of armor). FOT's automatic shotguns were bugged, I think, because not only you had the spread effect from shotgun shots, but you also had the spread effect from the burst stacking, which meant that it became the ultimate weapon for dealing with close groups in multiplayer.

I`m now a "proud" owner of a BoS armor that i can`t use. What`s also strange is that the head part is kinda only worth 88 caps or something and the body 188(?). I met some BoS outcast soldiers in the wasteland who fought between some raiders. That`s one of the things i like about Fallout 3, factions fight each others and you can simply enjoy the show. Once i saw a protectron fighting the mobile enclave radio bot and the protectron won. <3 However i looted the BoS armor from the raider fight.

but I suppose that some modding will be able to fix this right?

Yeah, modding will fix it.
Mods will make it right.
Please fix it! Moddings will do the trick...right?
Modding, modding, modding...

...but Beth will get the credit for making the game. And they are getting fucking 9/10 for it!
The same shit was with Oblivion.

For the Power Armour, using it I don't feel so powerful like I was before (in FO1&2). It feels more like just another armour, only fat looking (especially without a helmet)
I don't know who told them to change both power armours. They look dump.

The Enclave was in FO2, but I don't know why BoS didn't try to upgrade their technology since then? And now they're complaining about how their thechnology looks old to their's.

Player: So...you said you destroyed them some 30 years ago...then why you didn't get some of their technology?

*music and all conversations stopped like a vinyl record*

BoS Scribe: Well...we haven't had actually thought about that...

Player: Ohh...

And for the Training thing, when I think about it deeper, it's a good idea, but they put it in the wrong way. The training sounded from the start of the guy's conversation, like he was explaining it to a totall retard how to put on my pants. Also, Brother None said it right, there should be some other way to get this training (or maybe there is but I don't know about it...enlighten me please),

I am level 5 or 6 in my game, and I just stumbled on the outcasts. I had a scoped .44 magnum and I came pretty close to slaughtering all of the soldiers outside. Pathetic. How hard would it be to mod in damage threshold and damage types. It sounds like it would be a lot of work but it would make the game seem so much more realistic.

On a related note, in my current Fallout 2 game (with restoration project) I just got ambushed by the vertibird assault squad outside Gecko, I tried many times to kill all of them, but my measly combat shotgun and hunting rifle bounced off of their armor. I eventually had to solve it diplomatically, the enclave were just too powerful.

The only time I saw APA being taken out by weak guns in FO2 happened when I ambushed the secret meeting. There were two enclave soldiers there, both packing Pancor Jackhammers. And there also some Salvatores. I had Magnus' Weapons Mod, which meant that the Salvatores came close to killing Marcus the whole time. And meanwhile, took me a lot of shits to off those two weak enclave soldiers. I don't remember my exact guns, I think I used a Laser Rifle and a Pancor Jackhammer. Or a .233 pistol, can't remember right.
