First time out of the vault
I know i'll be asking for a beating but the link to that article is broken:

I'd really need the help. Got the game sitting here for 2 nights just staring at me.....

Thanks in advance.

---edit---

I got win2k fully patched up (forgot the actual service pack, should be 5, 6?!), dx9b on an amd2400+, 512mb.

Hi folks I am new to the board. After I got Fallout 2 for free on a gaming magazine's CD, I rightway installed it and played with addiction. But now I wanted to "play the whole story" and bought Fallout 1, german version. Now I have a PC running Windows 2000 and I do know about the walkthrough. I did everything as suggested there, but it did simply not work. I give my system specs now:

AMD Athlon XP2200+
512 MB RAM
GeForce FX 5600
DirectX 9.0b
Windows 2000 (German)

Now tell me: Is it by any means important wether the .dat files (which were descibed in 'properties' as DAT files but did not have this extension viewable to their name), are written in capital letters or not? I mean, after copying them they appeared in capitals, but I wrote, following the walkthrough, the content of the .cfg document not in capitals. Then i realized the game not working and wrote the name of the .dat files in small letters. Nothing. I wrote instead the name of them in capitals again and put capital letters in the .cfg, but all the way the same: if I, having copied master.dat and critter.dat and the contents of the data folder to my HD, decided to do humonguous installation and wrote the recommended lines. Neither clicking on the FALLOUW.exe created by me nor linking it with the Fallout symbol in the autorun folder ( i.e. I told the PC to open this symbol with FALLOUTW.exe) did any good; it just won't start. Instead, i got told i needed 20 MB HD space. After the copying of master.dat and critter.dat there are still 19.1 GB free. What can be wrong? Unfortunately, the link to the utility created by Odin which is described as making the .cfg procedure unnecessary is no longer working. So I do need advise on how to get this thingy to run. I would be real glad to get some help.

caps shouldn't play in here, but the 20 MB stuff has to do with the cfg file.. Sure you set everything correct ?

here's my config file; maybe you can tell me which line is wrong:

[system]
language=german
master_dat=c:\programme\fallout\master.dat
critter_dat=:\programme\fallout\critter.dat
[sound]
music_path2=c:programme\fallout\data\sound\music
free_space=0

critter_dat=:\programme\fallout\critter.dat

Assuming that's not a typo, you left out the hard drive letter

[sound]
music_path2=c:programme\fallout\data\sound\music

music_path2 should point to your CD drive.

Hi, with the following .cfg it still doesn't work. I do admit I re-named the master and critter file several times when I thought that caps might be the issue. They, as well as the falloutw file came to my HD written in caps, but you told me it doesn't matter, so let's look again at the config

[system]
language=german
master_dat=C:\Program Files\Fallout\master.dat
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\Fallout\critter.dat
[sound]
music_path2=D:\data\sound\music
free_space=0

I thought since Fallout 2 was auto- installed to this directory, maybe Fallout 1 also had to be in program files instead of programs (this is the 'Programme' folder in German Win2k)

But nevertheless, here is the other non-working config:

[system]
language=german
master_dat=c:\programme\fallout\master.dat
critter_dat=c:\programme\fallout\critter.dat
[sound]
music_path2=d:\data\sound\music
free_space=0

I have copied the files mentioned in the walkthrough to both my programs and program files folder and tried with the above shown configs to get the game started from either location, of course again with caps and non-caps letters in both cases used alternating, but no way, it didn't :cry:

I found a programm in the web with which it's creator claims to have 'fooled the fallout installer to think it's running on win 98'

I could give you the link and if there is nothing offensive or illegal with the application, it might - together with an explanation how it is to be used on Fallout, what I didn't manage to do since the readme was no great help - be put here as replacement for the file you, Odin, had once in the downloads section of NMA. I will, in case you dont like to get the link to this application seen in a publicily viewable forum thread, wait until you tell me if I should send you an email or if I should give the link to you per PN. Please, if I violated some unwritten rule by even mentioning such a file, don't ban me, I just would like to hear the opinion of someone more competent in the issue if this program might help me!

Replace free_space=0 with free_space=20480
That should do the trick. For some weird reason your config file is telling the game that there are 0 MBs of space free, I think.

Hmm, actually the article about installing Fallout on Win2k gives the free_space=0 line.

It works for me.

PS: I think I encountered this error as well.. and solved it by clearing up space. Fallout recognizes free space wrong, if it somehow recognized enough free space it should work.

Hi all, hi Claw,

I did defragmentation of my HD today and gained 1GB space by deleting some unnecessary files, but the game still won't start except it now shows me a grey loading screen like picture with an native american chief on it... Maybe if I gain an additional GB of free space, it will really work! :wink:
