How to rip classic Fallout sprites?

SMBComix

It Wandered In From the Wastes
As mentioned in another thread (that was about backgrounds), I'm working on a Fallout sprite comic series but first I'll need assets. While I've got a FOnline 2238 mapper up and running and I'm quickly learning how to use that, I'm hoping to be given directions (or a tutorial) on what programs to use to rip sprites from Fallout 1, 2, and possibly Tactics. I know I mentioned the Spriters Resource had seemingly full catalogs of sprite sheets from F1 and F2 in a long-ago thread, but I'd like to keep my credits list as short as possible... no disrespect intended, I just wanna save some room for the content I create. <3

If anyone's willing to lend me a hand or toss me a lead, that'd be great.

EDIT: I just realized I'd posted this in the wrong section. Could a mod please correct that? Sorry for my derp-ness.

Extract master.dat and critter.dat. All of the art/*/*.{FRM,FR[0-9]} files are images. You can convert them to BMP with frm2bmp (see the Tools section somewhere.)

There's probably a better tool for this nowadays (I hope!), check the downloads section.

Winrar works? What about 7zip?

EDIT: Just tried 7zip, and that didn't work...

Have you checked Dat/Undat Utils section in Downloads?
Dat Explorer is pretty easy to use.

I have, but almost none of them seem to work for me, and nearly all of them are segregated by F1 or F2. I'm on Windows 7, if that makes any difference in recommendation.

DAT Explorer doesn't support the Master.dat and Critters.dat of Fallout 1, but does support Fallout 2... isn't it supposed to support Fallout 1 as well?

DAT Explorer doesn't support the Master.dat and Critters.dat of Fallout 1.

"F1 Dat Explorer : F1 DAT-files unpacker with GUI. (161.9 KB)"
"KA Dat Extractor : File Packer and Database (DAT) File Extractor - Klingon Academy uses the same DAT format that was used in Fallout 1. So now we have orininal FO1 DAT packer. At last (18.9 KB)"
"Fallout 1 DAT-file extractor (FO1) : Extracts contents of Fallout 1 DAT-files. Also works with Fallout2 setup.dat. (24.7 KB)"
"DatExplorer : This will unpack all those DAT files that Fallout 1 and 2 uses, it works on both Fallout 1 & 2. (308.6 KB)"

You've tried all of these?

I have. F1 Dat Explorer and DatExplorer are the only ones that came close to working as I'd hoped they would. I haven't tried to extract anything with these two yet.

Ok, decided to use those... which FRM viewer/converter would you recommend? I can't find "frm2bmp" anywhere.

FRM <-> BMP converter (DOS) : This program will convert FRM pictures to BMP and back, this one is MS-Dos based. (36.3 KB)
Fo2 FRM converter : Converts FRM files from Fallout 2 to BMP or JPG, PNG, TGA, TIF, PBM, PGM and PPM. And now also convert BMP, TIF, PNG to FRM! (377.1 KB)

Not sure if the latter works with FO1 as well, but it's worth a try.

Titanium FRM browser is a great tool for *.frm files viewing, with built-in function for conversion to *.gif:

That's the one I'm using. Oh. My. God. It's fantastic. :D

It's giving me bmp's though, which are even better than .gif!

It's gonna be a LONG process, and sadly it doesn't export transparencies (or does it? If it does, I'm gonna be pissed lol, that'd save me a lot of time) so I'm using MS Paint to assemble the sprite sheets, and using the sheets off of the Spriters Resource as references.

EDIT: Ok, so it DOES export transparencies with .gif. That makes life a whole lot easier. Thanks a ton, guys, you've been immensely helpful. :D

Try setting the path to your frm file by manually:

1. run the program
2. right-click on its form (be it error message or the main window)
3. select the upper line from context menu (a string of bold question marks)
4. navigate to your frm file
