I killed my cat (I think)

Any networky/electricians out here?
I'm having intermittent internet loss every couple of minutes. The connection seems to just freeze for like 30 seconds and then resumes just fine.
Possible theorys:
1: I moved back to my summer house and something got messed up with the changing DNS somethingorother.
2: I killed the 30' CAT5 ethernet cable. Someone (me) like an asshole did not carefully roll it up while packing and it got a few tight bends in it. No hairpins or 90s but maybe some twisting on itself and some slightly greater than 1" radius bends.
Anyway I was just wondering if anyone experienced knew if a dead/injured cat5 cable could cause intermittent connection issues like I discribed. I really hope my cable isn't dead because then I would have to move my rig upstairs into the light it burnsss!

the more twisted and tightly wound network cable gets, the higher the chance of one of the wires inside getting broken.

its cheap too. just buy a new one...

cat5e or cat6.

it must have been the lasers

Usually it's perfectly fine if you don't have any kinks in it. Cables are pretty damn robust, and I've seen Cat 5 cable that was all but severed and still worked fine. If the cable is not being moved around when it loses connection, I kinda doubt that the cable is the cause(not to say it's not possible).
So.. Do you notice any weird conditions when your internet goes out? Peak hours? Raining? Lightning storm? What type of connection is it(DSL? cable?)? Cables are pretty damn cheap; it's a easy thing to get out of the way in the process of elimination, but be prepared to move on to other possibilities.

Here's Google's public DNS addresses you can set to be static:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
Automatically acquired DNS/IP addresses should work in almost any residential setup, though. Depending on the type of internet connection you have, you can see if you still get a dial tone when the service goes out. Might be the building, might be the ISP, might be the computer software, might be the computer hardware, might be the cable. Have fun.

Thanks for the replys guys. However the same night I posted this the gods struck my house with a lightning bolt, and it blew my onboard ethernet adapter on my PC. Thankfully that was the only thing that blew. 60 dollars later I am the proud owner of a new Netgear USB Wireless Dongle, which itself is already outperforming my old wired connection.

I killed my cat too.... But that's a story for another day.

If your wireless connection is outperforming your wired connection, something was definitely wrong with your wired connection.
