I'd like some opinions on Morrowind

First time out of the vault
So, back in the far off year of 2002 I bought Morrowind.

I recall I kind enjoyed the game, but due to lack of time (and the fact that my computer at the time went the way of the dodo while I was playing) I never managed to finish the game.

I just found the disk recently and I'm wondering if I should play it.

I'd just like to get some opinions on the game, just to make up my mind.

Oh, I should mention that I loathe Oblivion. Not because it's fantasy, not because of the gameplay (well, most of the gameplay) but because it's too bland, has a sucky story in general and your actions don't seem to matter all that much.

Give it a try, you don't even need mods to make it playable as it's fine to play Vanilla unlike Oblivion. Then again some of the visual mods make it look really good.
While it may be a bit clunky it is still a very good game, solid writing, a decent story and the world is so much more interesting than Oblivions.

Thanks.

I do think that even visually Morrowind is way better than Oblivion. The design is just awesome :)

I guess I'll give it a try, then.

Morrowind has better atmosphere and more diverse locations than Oblivion. Also menus and items look more serious. But at the heart it is the same level scaled lifeless world, and the only reason to play is to enjoy the beautiful graphics, which in morrowind look like crap now.
I did play the game alot back then, but it is so unfulfilling, you always want there to be more, but it is just empty.
You can spend days with chosing and installing mods in the hope of making the game good, but in the end you realise it is still bad.

I suggest to use the MGE mod (from Timeslip) along with Morrowind. Also, this texturepack is amazing:

Already got that one yesterday ;)

That's my biggest fear, to be honest.

You got Tribunal and Bloodmoon? Both are pretty much story-oriented and long expansions. If you're tired of "emptiness" (Still, I like Morrowind emptiness much more than Oblivion one) you should definitely check these two.
And you can start them right away, without finishing the main quest.

Ah, true that. It's a Beth's speciality to create a tourist-simulator with combat system boring as hell. *sigh*
Still there is music from Jeremy Soule, which is a masterpiece.

Hmm... But will the story make sense without playing the main quest?

Aye. These expansions are totally independent. Tribunal main quest will start when you rest somewhere in the wilderness while Bloodmoon one starts after you travel to that snowy island(Can't remember the name) via boat. Pretty long stories if you'll ask me, especially when compared to modern game "expansions".

Still haven't started playing :P

The pimping out of Morrowind is taking waaaay too long (especially because I'm studying for some college exams).

Install the graphic extension mods and the game will look and feel quite a bit nicer. Other than that, great open world RPG.

I had fun playing MW+ expansions. The only problem I had was that I had more than 300+ mods on it and my warp stopped working. There were some great companion mods that came with their own bg stories, houses and quests. In fact, most of the mods were so much fun to play with that I ignored most of the main story for quite a while and just did guild quests for convenience.

Fun tip that I remember: before you walk out the door of the citizenship registration office, you technically don't exist, so you can commit crimes with impunity. I usually kill the captain of the guard for fun and a full set of armor.

Funny. I've only played Daggerfall, and this is my biggest fear of Morrowind as well. I just know that is going to be my reaction.

How did you kill the guard at level one?

One problem I had with Morrowind was even if you became the head of the church by completing all the related quests...steal just a single coin in front of one of the guards in the temple and the fuckers will attack you - the head of the church, their boss. Their behavior to you should reflect your position and title, typical Bethesda sloppiness, create an AI and apply it equally to all...

But don't be put off by that, the game still has plenty to offer, sort of.
