IGN's Top 100 RPG list is Pretty Stupid

IGN has presented a list of top 100 RPGs, as is usually the case for such a list, there's no way of doing it right, especially if you're going to include the likes of Pokemon and Paper Mario.

Wasteland isn't listed at all, while Fallout 3 at #10 outranks both Fallout (#34) and Fallout 2 (#28). In the non-post-apoc realm, it also fails to list the likes of Darklands, Rogue, Realms of Arkania, and any of the three seminal cRPGs Troika created, while of course it can't skip on great works like Fable II, Mass Effect 2, Neverwinter Nights 1/2 and Icewind Dale 2. Haha. Just. Hahaha.
Fallout 3 marked a shift in the industry, a move that saw the western RPG begin to surpass its Japanese counterparts. Fallout 3 is a massive game set in an equally massive open world where you can go in any direction you like and do anything you want to do... as long as you can survive long enough to do so, that is. Set in a post-apocalyptic American wasteland rife with memorable characters, Fallout 3 is the epitome of the deep, modern RPG and the archetype that many developers will mimic moving forward.
Hahaha.

Specially if it's from IGN.

Also, why si Pokemon BW in that list? even as a Pokefag, that game is garbage the worst of a series that isn't even that good.

Looks like this list is more about popularity than anything else. Of course, it all could be just a huge troll attempt as well, especially when one considers the Fallout 3 description.

I think lists like these are always an exercise in futility.

JRPGs are not for me, but I'm not exactly opposed to them in principle. I don't think it's a good idea to muddle a top list by conflating the jRPG and wRPG genre and then list the likes of Pokemon in there.

Also ignorance of history more than 2 console generations ago is...typical. There's no way to justify listing Ultima VII that low, or missing Darklands.

These lists are designed to generate controversy and fandom wars. Controversy = more clicks, more clicks = more $ for the profesionnal bottom kissers over at IGN.

Only thing that surprised me is that Final Fantasy VI, not VII or Skyrim or FO3, made it to the top. It's the only FF I played, and it was really good to be honest. Not my top RPG by far, but they could have done worse for numero uno.

List is still shit however, if for no other reason than it puts JRPGs, WRPGs and games like Diablo on the same list.

Haha, such a bad list.

Also, the picture for F2 is of the Primitive Tribe from my Restoration Project. It's from 1.2 of the RP (damn, I wish sites stopped hosting it) but definitely from my mod. Yay the RP is gold standard. 8-)

Three Dog, Stupid Russian Guy, Ashley from RE4 in Power Armour aaaand ... um ... Moira.

Yup real memorable and not in a positive way.

If Fallout 3 surpasses JRPGs then how comes there are 3 in the top 10 and one of those is Final Fantasy IV which while not bad doesn't exactly bring anything to the table except the first half decent story in a Final Fantasy game.

Some sites used screens from my mod as well when talking about Fallout 1/2. It's funny, because it shows that they just ninja-google whatever image they find on the web and use it.

It seems they got a lot of the console RPG's down, but hardly any of the awesome pc titles. Oblivion before Morrowind. Pffttt. Fallout 3 before Fallout 1 and 2. Garbage. Skyrim in the top 10. Give me a fucking break. Worst of all, no Arcanum or Wasteland? Hell I would put SotN in before Pokemon Black! IGN is ruining everything. This is the gaming site that tons of people put their faith in? The comments are even more hilarious to boot. It boils down to people arguing over which game should or shouldn't be on the list, lot's of people debating the definition of a RPG, and dudes spouting out death wish's. I also believe they intentionally make stupid lists to get more hits.

I also got that impression.

Why don't we make a top 100 RPG list?

Tbh though, I'd take FO3 over any JRPG any day.

Good thing WL2 is on the way and Obsidians little project seems to be going well. Yay western RPG comeback!

(Where is the cover for Obsidians Kickstarter effort btw?)

Such nonsense...the fact i have to click through each individual game sucks donkeys balls. Fallout is the greatest RPG of all time, right gentlemen... :P

Some good picks and a lot of dumb picks.

I can understand leaving out some games, even classics, but if there is one game that should have been in there SOMEWHERE it is Arcanum. The fact that didn't make the list is a downright travesty.

X-Play (a video game review show on G4, a US network) is equally as bad. I remember a few years ago they awarded Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story with RPG of the year. It was the same year the first Dragon Age game came out. Ok, Dragon Age may not rank with the all time greats but it is vastly superior to some Mario game.

I doubt most reviewers really get RPGs. I think they fundamentally see it as an FPS or action game with a story, rather than a story in game form with action elements.

Reminds me of my middle school talent show . . .

The popular kids won.

You and I may have to duke this out outside, sir.

Hardly surprizing that IGN would go for blatantly obvious marketing, sales numbers over quality and obviously for whatever causes them to get most clicks.
