Silly little topic but I really could do with something light hearted.
To all of you science fiction and/or fantasy fans, if the possibility was given to you to immigrate to one of the universes you have seen in movies or video games, or have read about in comic books or books and take up residence there, which universe would you like to live in and possibly what kind of job or career would you like to pursue there if possible.

I have put up a couple of universes from sci fi shows, movies, and games that I like as well as some of the fantasy universes I know off (I have included various version of the same universe but at a different moment of its history).
You are of course free to add/mention one I have not added as I probably only know the surface of all the imagined universes in various media.

I would probably go for the Wing Commander universe. I know there is a war going on between humanity and the Kilrathi but it is not everywhere at same time and there are places to move to and various opportunities for any man or woman ready and willing to take on the chance to become a self made person.
I would love to be a Privateer but I would be happy if I could serve on board a commercial transport and see various distant star systems, nebulas and the unique celestial bodies and phenomenon of the universe.
(and there is fortunately no time travel or dimensional travel that could screw up the timeline or reality)

Second choice would be the Star Trek universe (original) which also offers many opportunities for a regular person such as me to visit distant star systems and behold the wonders of the universe, and with a replicator at your side you don't have to worry about the basics and the essentials, allowing a person to focus more on trying to reach what they want to accomplish (or just loose yourself on the holodeck)
Of course there are a lot more unpleasant and downright hostile species in this universe that could screw up your day; Klingons and Romulans amongst others in the period of the Classic Series, and later on Cardassians, the Dominion, and of course the dreaded Borg Collective which does not kill you but rather makes you an extension of itself.
And then there are of course pesky God like aliens who want to put humanity on trial, time travel, and dimensional travel that could turn a relative pleasant place into a hellhole in which we are all slaves in just one change.

Known Space might also be nice as it also has interstellar travel including faster-than-light as well as such great discoveries such as boosterspice which can extend your life indefinitely.
There are aggressive aliens but outside the Kzinti (and perhaps the Pak Protectors) most are more strange than truly evil and most of the conflicts happening between humanity and aliens simply being the result of misunderstanding as both are such different species in physiology and thinking.
However I don't like the idea of an all powerful UN that tries to control and manipulate humanity through psychology and drugs and stunts scientific research and development just because of the possible risk that it might lead to new kinds of weapons. (the UN in the Known Space universe tries to turn humanity into pacified race devoid of aggression and ambition, and making us forget that there ever was such a thing as war. This nearly meant the end of humanity when the Kzinti showed up, teaching humanity that not every species also becomes a bunch of pacifists once they develop interstellar travel and set up colonies on other planets)
Fortunately no time travel or dimensional travel, even Artificial Intelligence do not pose a real threat as they tend to have a rather limited life span.

Star Trek. Seriously. No, stop laughing! I am NOT a fucking nerd, shut up you sickos! I don't want to marry a klingon :V

But imagine what kind of setting it is? For a normal schmock like us. No real need for money. An incredible advanced level of technology, replicators for fucks sake! Beaming! Star Ships. Most health issues are eliminated. Want to do something? Go to the fucking Holodeck! Want to learn some music? replicate your self some viola, done!

One of the best settings to live in.

Tough choice because I'm hard pressed to remember a science fiction setting that I like and that is also not at least partially dystopic... So I have to choose between either being sent somewhere dumb or to a hell hole.

I guess the Civillization Beyond Earth world would be the best alternative, being on a ultra futuristic and space traveling society which is establishing humanity's last hope at stellar colonization is not too shitty, but still cool. hehe

Star Trek (Everything between ENT and TNG, really). Sorry, but if I get to decide, why the hell would I not take the only functional utopia? Niven's Known Space would also be ok, but give me Star Trek over anything else.

Can I choose discworld?

^ Same.

Although it would depend if you get to choose what place you occupy in said world. If you start at the very bottom of the social ladder, Discworld wouldn't be particularly enjoyable (not would you last long).

None? They're all distopias and your place in the world dictates how good you'll have it?

I guess for your average civilian, Star Trek is best? And I really dislike most Star Trek tbh.

Of course, I was bound to forget a few science fiction or fantasy settings when I made this thing up.

There are a few crapsack ones (because some people would enjoy those more) but not all of them are really terrible you know, even some that are an extension of the 20th/21st century offer plenty of opportunity to make something of yourself and pursue happiness and fulfilment.
It is probably unlikely you might become a galactic hero or a bad ass space warrior (I go with the idea that some some of our reality would apply in those universes as well like for example no plot armor, thus Luke Skywalker and James T Kirk really do have to be careful when facing storm troopers or Klingon Warriors) but you can still can have a very good and memorable life.

Heh heh, yeah, when I made this topic and poll up I realized some places are obviously 'hell on Earth' for most common people. And even if they are nice places in the beginning there is always something that will eventually show up to tear it down and bring in death on a mega scale or slavery. (Reapers, the Borg Collective or the Dominion)
Face in, in general Utopian settings don't sell well unless there is some threat out there that wants to undo it, and Dystopian settings are popular because we usually follow or play the hero/heroes that are out to defeat the ones who made it such a terrible place or keep making sure it stays terrible.
But we are forgetting often that most of the people living in it are civilians that on their own can do little against the oppression and that they are the ones that often suffer the most and have the most casualties.

Exactly! I'd choose fictional world from Russian sci-fi Alisa's Travel, written by Kir Bulychev in 1974. (Приключения Алисы, Кир Булычёв)
It's basically a space-opera for kids, where human society evolved into some form of flawless communist utopia. Money doesn't exist here anymore, neither any economy system as we know it today; goods and services are available to anyone and assigned in accordance with the needs. Personal political opinions and beliefs aside, this is one of my favourite child books.

Why would anyone like to live on the world of Fallout? Don't like having working internet and toilets?

Between those I would probably choose Deus Ex, give me my augmentations.

I just threw it in, there is bound to be someone here who thinks he or she would be better at home in that world.
Same goes for the Warhammer settings and the AD&D settings I threw in, I think they are pretty crapsack to a regular person like myself, but hey someone else might find it the land of opportunity.

Outside some of those mentioned hostile species the Star Trek universe and Known Space (and Wing Commander and Foundation to a degree) are pretty much Utopian or way better than society of today is, and if you don't like it you can always choose to leave and live on another planet or moon. That is a freedom we don't have today. (I can't even immigrate to New Zealand as I lack any skill or knowledge that could ensure me employment there in advance)

If I choose Star Wars would I be immediately assigned as middle management on some planet destroying weapon only to die hours later when a plucky group of teenagers destroys it? You know what Forgotten Realms here I come.

Pokeymans, seems like a pretty cozy world where you only have to worry about betting money on cockfighting.

Hmm, I should have considered adding that one, but even the Pokemon world has its 'world-coming-to-an-end' threats as there has been at least one criminal not to mention one of those legendary godlike Pokemon that wanted to end the world. (always happens in Japanese stuff, how cosy and friendly the universe starts out as)

This.
Deus Ex. I mean come on. Hey, yeah, would you like to live in a cyberpunk dystopia where wealth disparity is a critical issue, Big Brother controls all telecommunications and there is an engineered plague going around explicitly to make you poor and frightened?

Fallout. The world has ended. What are the chances you'll have a good time of it?

WH40k. Yeah this setting gets called grimdark for a reason. If you're a human, chances are not good that yours will be a happy lot in life.

Out of those choices I would say star trek as well, life as a whole is pretty good there.

Mass Effect? Giant reaper invasion? Eff that.

Star Wars? You'll probably end up a solder in someone's army, eff that. And even if you were a Jedi the whole light vs dark side gets pretty old after a while.

Warhammer? Where everyone is a roided up male going on about how righteous they are? I'll pass.

Deus ex is like the bladerunner universe, pretty bleak with big corporations running the show. Pollution and surveillance everywhere.

You could pick something with a fantasy setting like baldur's gate or LoTR after mordor was defeated, but then you realize it's still pretty much the medieval times and tooth ache sucks. So modern health care and a modern setting it is.
