Inside the Vault: Scott Lawlor

The interviewer asks him how involved he is in the music and he gives a rather elaborate answer, hence my question.

That's his job, he's the sound director, the composer discusses what's needed with him, and they discuss the atmosphere they're trying to accomplish. Sometimes the sound director also tweaks the music or composes his own bits (like Charles Deenen for Planescape: Torment)

There is a library of sounds, but the sounds aren't unique, as they have been used to death. How many times have you heard a creaky door open and thought "Haven't I heard that before?" Oh, my most hated sound in the generic crowd "Gasp!" that is used in every freakin' movie trailer, television show, everything! Enough! No more generic "Gasp!" please! Having unique sounds is a good thing, and it's not like any company just goes into a project without first setting a budget. Ha.

of course, that's why I said "trivial things". no one's gonna care if you use the same footsteps that have been used before. hell, they can even tweak them a bit and they won't be the same anymore.

but I guess you're right, he has a budget and he's free to spend it however he wants. but if the gunfire sounds are crap, I'll be majorly pissed off and blame the footsteps :D

aenemic, as said, most producers mix bought sounds and their own sounds. You can't recycle fully, it's a simple fact.

Except for the Wilhelm Scream

I always thought the plasma melt death sound effect was pretty good in the originals.

My favorite voice clip is Sulik's "Whatcha be needin?" It's nothing special, but after years and years I can still hear it in my head, right on cue, even with the volume turned off.

haha, the "Watcha need, youngster?" with the elongated e in "need" is the one that stayed with me. I still miss that old tree-head.

As for death sounds screw the burst sound! The COOL one is when you land a critical single shot and blow the half torso + arm. It's like this mix of "spleeoosh" and "uuuuaaah" scream...

ah so many good memories

I have the same thing with the "Certainly, what do you wish to know?" from Aradesh. I guess it's the melody in his voice.

Sounds like an interesting job.

I can't pick any particular great sounds to rank them above others, because FO & FO2 are just full of them. Only shame is they didn't recycle the demo's button clicking sounds. For someone who installed some random demo from a disk in 1997 or 1998, and when not even getting to play it yet, the menu screen and those button sounds alone gave feeling I wasn't going to play another average game.

These things are what separates legendary games from good games for me. Not gameplay or design or balance or whatever.

My favourite sound is the thud of a body hitting the ground after the ribcage explosion critical hit. It's something that the new game is missing; for all the visceral flying chunks launching everywhere, the soft, wet thud of a body hitting the ground is noticably absent.

Mine :

-Exploded rat squeezing ( eek )
-Minigun ( sounds really badass )
-Ribcage explosion scream ( very satisfying )

Then again, Fallout 1 features my all time favourite soundtrack and sound effects.

Fallout 3 had decent sound effects ( some of the guns really sound in your face and powerful ) but a rather lame soundtrack. Never understood why they'd prefer a generic soundtrack over one that really does wonders for the atmosphere...

The sound plays in Fallout 1/2 when you enter combat and the metal panels in front of the "END/TURN COMBAT" slide open. They did reuse that sound for VATS, he's correct there.
Didn't even realise they used the same sounds. Then again, I haven't played Fallout 3 for ages. :)

Didn't know about the Wilhelm scream. Thanks.

I semi-raged at the VATS comment, then realized he was using "VATS" as a generic catch-all term for combat. I love that sound, incidentally.

Most of my favorite Fallout sound effects are from combat, from the gunfire to the critical hit splatters and squishes.

Hey, it's Bethesda, they rather have one BIG name and two unknown voices that do the rest of the NPCs...

If they chose Mark Morgan for the soundtrack I'm sure it would blow our minds.

I always wondered why the death screams of female PCs in FO1/2 were much more quiet then the male ones. Has anyone else noticed this? I also liked the voices of the PCs in general, when they stand up after knocked down, or the "ugh" sound when they get knocked down etc...

So it's not just me?

It seems so. :)
It's a pity, because this death scream is well recorded etc. It would be easily to "mod" it right, though.
