Interplay: Fallout 6 could be ours

How's that for an attention-grabbing headline? Eurogamer exclusively interviews Eric Caen.<blockquote>"But in that case, the IP will come back to us, and of course, we will complete our work and release Fallout MMO."

Caen's Fallout 5 refers to the next Fallout game from Bethesda, with last year's Fallout: New Vegas considered the fourth game in the hugely successful series.

"The original licensing deal was for three games and their DLC," Caen continued. "So they already did Fallout 3, then Fallout: New Vegas, and they can only do one more Fallout, 5, if the sale of the IP is cancelled by the court.

(...)

Interplay has so far refrained from showing much from Fallout Online because "anything we show will help Bethesda in their fight".

Caen refused to comment on his commitment to launch the game during the second half of 2012, but insisted the game was well into development.

"Since early 2009, we have a virtual Fallout world that exists and grows every day. We don't want to release too many elements because of the litigation. We don't know yet when we will reveal more. Sorry!

"Our team, led by Chris Taylor and Mark O'Green [two of the creators of the original Fallout], loves Fallout and what we are putting together. We all hope we will be able to show you soon more of our work, and that you will like it."</blockquote>So basically, nothing new there.

Of course it's most likely bullshit, just a loud statement on IP's part. But what if they are right, I mean, they seem to have good lawyers on the case and if they are even considering this idea, might there actually be some small possibility of that happening?

Can't see it a good thing though. Say they get to do Fallout 6. Would they go back and do it Van Buren style, when the 'open-world fps" formula is selling so well? Doubt it. And I doubt even more that they would be able to make a game so huge at all. Bethesda wouldn't license them the skyrim engine after that either. :)

Skyrim engine sucks anyway, so who cares? Btw, anyone better than bethesda, even an independent developer studio from Uganda, to do the next Fallouts.

FO:NV is considered as a sequel?

From a contractual viewpoint, it is a full game developed under the Fallout name, so it could be argued to be one of the games Bethesda was entitled to make by that contract.

Couldn't they swing the whole "Oh, Fallout: New Vegas isn't specifically Fallout 4... cause it doesn't say Fallout 4 on the box, dig?"

Doesn't really matter unless the contract specifically states that they're allowed to make Fallouts 3, 4 and 5, in which case they'd be in breach of contract anyway?

Fallout by Interplay or Bethesda :S ... urgh what bright future is in front of us.

Cant they just kill each other in curt just like in ancient times or like in Mad Max 3 ... with the Thunderdome, 2 enter no one leaves or something ...

The Exclusive Licensing Agreement only calls the games "Fallout 3", "Fallout 4" and "Fallout 5" "tentatively" and later defines what is considered a full fledged sequel. New Vegas is definitely "Fallout 4" under that definition.

There is no such thing as definitely in corporate law. And certainly not in a case involving chaps like beth and interplay. I see another chapter unfold in the neverending story of this farce. The lawyers on both sides certainly struck gold with that one.

If Interplay wins the whole case, tagging every Fallout 3 and New Vegas article at The Vault as "non canon" will be quite tedious.

I will do all the Fallout 3 articles in one night session.

A bot will take care of FO3-specific articles, but not with FO3-derived lore in general articles.

Just roll back the articles to beginning of october 2008. :drummer:

New Vegas definitely counts as Fallout 4, otherwise they'd never use the numbers for the future games and they could do an infinite amount of Fallout games.

I haven't been able to find the value but how much did Bethesda pay for the IP usage for 3 titles?
