Is there even anyone still modding/honestly playing FOT?

Darkgale

First time out of the vault
I see alot of these posts are months and some even a year old. I know alot of people never played FOT to being with, and those that did was along while ago. I know that storyline was horrible, and the engine was horrible in places, but is there anyone out there besides me who wants to bring this game to some form of glory? Im talking about a well thought out well planned out Total Conversion.

I see that Fallout 3 is on its way though not anytime soon by the sound of it, and the thing that bugs me is that it will be 3D, espiecially in any form of TES engine. I own and have played all the way through Oblivion and it STINKS! Its very linear. Yes if you look at it F2 was linear as well but atleast you didn't feel like it was. You could finish a 'quest' any number of ways on some quests and only one way on others, but in oblivion there was no real choices... you went on a quest to this place to kill these guys to get that etc etc, no real 'choices' you made changed much of anything.

I really dont want to see F3 taking this same route, and 2d Isometric is part of what makes it so unique. It works extremly well for these kind of games, as F2 is proof there off, and in this day in age you would think that you could have a very streamlined 2D isometric engine, that was easily moddable, because all our games these days are designed around thee most up-to-date physics and lighting. When useing all this brute force for just simple high-resoultion pre-rendered images, it would be seamless and beautiful. I feel that FOT has a great set of quality images and would have been a great game if not for the engine itself, as well as the storyline.

I find myself playing FOT and F2 over and over again day in day out for years now, with a few months of MMORPGs and other games thrown in there, but i do keep coming back to F2 and FOT. The only thing I regret is that i missed the golden age of modding on F2, and was there when the golden age of FOT was going on but hadnt the knowledge to mod. I tried mapping and scripting in the FOT editor but just couldn't understand it at the time. I have since grown atleast semi-knowledgable as to its workings as I have also since mapped for other games.

Anyway, I don't really have a idea for what this TC could be which is part of the reason why im asking for anyone else who is interested, so that if i did have this amazing plot and ideas they wouldnt be wasted, if noone else was interested. I've posted to join a few other mods with no replys back.

FOT modding has seemed to die. I dont even know if a true TC mod for FOT could be well worked out as I've seen a few people state that true RPing in the FOT engine is hard, unlike the F2 engine, only reason i dont want to use it is because of the dated graphics.

Any feed back to this post or current mods going on that i could join and do any work for including (web design/master, artwork, maping, and a bit of scripting) let me know. I really am looking for any kind of mod to join or to start a serious mod up myself, just wanted to make sure people were still interested.

My next stop if FOT fails would be F2, but as stated before dated graphics is a turn off for me. Maybe I should make a image conversion mod and make everything in F2 Higher resolution...

Like you, I rather enjoy FOT and you are right about F2 graphics being a turn off. A high-res conversion, if possible for F2 would be great! I am a utility writer and sound fx designer when it comes to mods and at the moment I am investigating the entities file formats and hoping to make some weapon sound changes. You can count me in if/when you decide to try for a TC for FOT...

Sounds good. Since FOT modding is very obviously on the decline I'm going to treat this mod as a long term project. Starting from something basic such as a single map and adding on from there. I read in another post (here) that using the FOT engine to make a true RPG doesnt work well.

So it really just depends on what kind of TC we are looking to make. I wish that FOT was much more the RPG engine but its not. With this in mind I'm now more interested in making either A: Just a mod for F2 because FOT (as stated above) isnt a very good RPG engine, or B: Making a tactical campaign, like SWAT or something. (which actually doesn't sound half bad)

You can contact me in a plethora of ways:

And PMs on here I check everyday.

In the mean time I'll be looking at tutorials in more detail.

FOT isn't an RPG engine full stop. Oh you can make and RPG standalone map, but the campaign set up doesn't really support it.

The trigger system is flexible, but limited. A lot more could be done than was included in the default campaign but to make a respectable RPG experience would require double, if not tripple the amount of scripting than to do the same thing with say the FO2 mapper.

The biggest hurdles you'll face are the lack of a speech tree, skill and stat checks, followers and the transfer of items. Well there are work arounds, but work arounds by default require more work than normal. It's complex enough to keep track of all the conversation options and their consequences, but then with FOT you've got to script the actual mechanics of having the conversation.

One of the main problems is that tagnames assigned to characters can get stripped by traveling to the world map and by reloading. This makes scripting for individual characters difficult and virtually impossible beyond the first map, where you encounter them.

The best option is to play to FOT's abilities, to follow somewhat the default campaign setup a series of connected tactical situations. But unlike the default campaign add more options to complete the situation (beyond just going in from the left or right, sniping or a full frontal assault etc) including the option to fail and continue the game. With more of the outcome of the previous maps affecting what you find in the upcomming missions and plenty of optional side missions. Forgetting about character based choices, as you would find in an RPG.

Right on, Darkgale! I'm a long term Chosen One, only recently discovering FOT. However, I've heaps of XP modding NWN(1), and Very keen to do a wild-west flavored FOT campaign- the player bein like Clint E. or Yojimbo, eh. Player(s), if not too hard to script. But as someone said, conversation tree, stat + skill checks, plus sex check, karma check, companion check, race check, many others, are E-sential. Someone above said there's a workaround; so, if some petty local genius would write a "wizard" typa-thang that repeatedly did yer "workaround" for ya, we'd all be cookin with serious gas. Such minor helper bits o software were bein constantly pumped out by the NWN community, why don't some upstanding Vaulter stand up? Relatively dumb or summat? I'm not capable of such myself, but am lookin into the process involved in such workarounds, to see just how long it could all take.
But Time is no issue fer me; I'm GMing some kinda Fallout game, or bust! Any keen modders out there got some advice? Anyone actually *done* a finished FOT adventure, anywhere?

well i haven't finished a mod, however requiem, and i are putting the final touches on a speech tree system that may well change the roleplayability of fot. our lengthy discussion can be found under the tagnames being stripped thread if your'e interested.

Opus, yer a Gawd. Exactly what's needed, get yer FedEx quests goin, some opportunities fer Good/Evil/Ugly moral choices, etc etc

Weeell, that and Claymore Shinguards on Power Armour.

Someone, the post is right above you, is your NWN addled mind so dumb it can't remember someone's username for more than a second?

If you can't do, THEN SHUT THE FUCK UP!

FOT wasn't set up to be modded, the tools were released later and the full toolset still hasn't been released.

Now I'm beginning to think you are trolling.

I was going to say you were a bit harsh requiem_for_a_starfury, but now I realise your absolutely right. I too wish FOT had more missions and RPG aspects, but I don't know how to make them so I don't have a right to complain about others not making them. NMA FTW!!!!!

Btw, I'm a long time viewer, recently registered. The best thing I ever found on this site was the fallout jokes (You're a
Fallout Junkie If...)
Who ever wrote those are gods! Those seriously made me laugh in my chair, and when I showed me dad he didn't even understand. But, hey!!I understood so what the fuck ever!!!

You'd need to read all of kingmarco66's posts to really understand the harsh reply. Even on games based on the same engine or scripting language modding lessons learned on one game don't always apply to another. But to come into a community and start throwing you weight around because you've modded a totally unrelated game is the height of rudeness as far as I'm concerned.

Aye, I'm still playing fallout 1, 2 and more recently tactics (which I've never beaten due to the disk 3 corruption problems I ran into every time I played it, but now I've finally found the solutions to.)

Given the sheer fun factor of FOT (I was a big fan of final fantasy tactics and the front mission series to a much lesser extent) I couldn't resist playing with the editor after running into a dead end wall of disk 3 errors. Once I successfully bypassed them I decided to play through again from the beginning, (I was stuck for months without a fix for the errors) and made some note worthy changes to my campaign to add to the fun.

Short List follows

-Added in a barret .50 cal sniper rifle since the basic sniper rifles are worthless by the time you start facing off against super mutants and robots

-Modified 90% of the assault rifles in the game to allow for single shot, 3 round burst, and full auto. (I know not every rifle or smg in real life has these options, but meh, it's more for fun that realistic accuracy)

-Over hauled the shops to provide a more realistic array of goods (namely 30.06 ammo and .303 ammo and applicable weapons in early game when m-16's arrive on scene and the rifles using these calibers are still useful, and the 50cal rifles I created for sale later on,) As well as trying to work on a way of purging inventory from the shop keepers over time (once you've sold him rocks, stinky meat platters and pistols it's highly unlikely you'll ever need to buy them back)

-Added in some inventory to the vehicles (a hummer now comes with 3 M-16's 2 leather II armors and a few hundred rounds of ammo, a scout buggy with a desert eagle and ammo, a apc with a couple gren launchers, 2 envrio armors, ammo and 2 m60's, the tank with 25 rounds of tank ammo, a couple power armor suits, and a browning 50 cal with ammo.

-added in the tank as a vehicle parked at bunker epsilon.

-Threw in a lot more shops in the towns with a wide variety of equipment (and a useful place to spend all those caps you've been collecting and to pawn off stuff mid mission)

-Created a few more npc's to add to the recruit roster

-Added in Shauri's brother Tidduk as an available recruit after you reach bunker Epilson and finish a couple missions. (made him profiecent with melee weapons, throwing, and small guns)

-Added in the female Reaver ambassador that falls in love with you as recruit option after the ambassador rescue mission. (not sure if she falls in love with your char if you play a male as I've only ever played a female and gotten the "your so beautiful I love you speech which was a nice touch) I kept her default skill selections you saw when she was a temporary party member.

-That hero Hanz (I think the name is) from the city you free from bandits and save the ghouls in alas the name escapes me at the moment) If you save him he's available for recruitment back at the bunker.

-Dumped Mother death claws domesticated perk in favor of slayer and life giver (a bit unbalancing I admit, but when she takes on mutants and robots with heavy guns it's a serious necessity unless you want to dope her up on psycho/voodoo/afterburner.

Scripted in a few more random encounters with some other people, namely

-Stacy, a caravan guard that found herself unemployed when raiders blew away her employer, most of the caravan, and left her for dead. (you need to use doctor skill to heal her as she's unconscious among the bodies. Once she's been healed she offers to join your group as a way of saying thanks. (a damn good sniper and comes with a .50 cal sniper rifle, although she only has 18 rounds of ammo left)

-Blood Asp a non functioning robot you come across, that you can repair and reprogram if you have a high enough repair/science skill, and will then fight loyally on your side. Doesn't come with any gear, but has the targeting computer perk, bonus movement, and emp shielded, and is a real killer with big guns, energy weapons, and Hand to hand.

I guess you could call the mod a finished beta version as I'm still play testing for holes/bugs/fuirther improvements needed, but it's pretty much a small enhancement mod I'm tenatively calling Lady Silvers Wasteland Expansion. (in honor of my first Fallout #1 char Lady Silver.)

I;ve given serious and deep considerastion to making a real fall out 2 mod (as opposed to my mess of random un organized tweaks I've done to it over the years) but still enjoy the improvements over play control offered in FOT, even if the rpg quality of FO 2 vanished to a large extent.

I too am still playing FO:T and quite interested in modding for it, though I admit I have a whooole lot to learn before I can contribute anything solid.

After searching through a few different forums including this one, it seems that no one was able to figure out a way to edit sprites for characters and vehicles (and therefore unable to make TCs for the game). Can anyone tell me (I'm sure starfury would know, you seem very knowledgeable in the area of FO:T modding), is there still no utility available to help with this?

Without the ability to edit character and vehicles sprites, I may unfortunately have to scrap a project idea I was thinking I could build with FO:T. I'm also pretty bummed by a post from a while back that said that modding FO:T characters would be illegal. If thats the case, that really sucks.

It is however good to see others still playing this great game, and thanks to any help anyone can give me.

Well I've never really got into the whole adding sprites are (yet!) so I can't comment on that one. But as far as modding FOT chars being illegal?

If you can mod guns, buildings, diolague script etc... And that's fine then why would modding a char (essentially just another sprite and line of code) be something illegal? (and even if it is as long as you don't go spamming the net with your mod who's going to know?)

In my My mod I altered the stats for mother death claw, and a few other npc's and plan to keep them in when I release it for public download.

There are two Sprite editors now available that are capable of editing characters and vehicles, check the files section or search the forum. Dak's version of redviewer and you'll have to search the news forum for the name of the other one.

DemonOfDonuts link to the post? Probably they were talking about using Tactics graphics in other games not changing the graphics in FOT.

Thanks x1000 requiem! I shall indeed search for those editors.

Also, here's a link and quote to that thread/post so you guys don't think I'm crazy :D : http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30148

I have to be honest here and ben you are a complete newbie to the modding world. I'm a professional 3D Artist, Programmer, Mapper, Sound Artist and 2D Artist.

Do you even understand what a Total Conversion is?

Here's a list of why you can't create a TC.

1) FO:T is not open source
2) The devs don't support animation editing
3) It would be illegal to modify the game anims and release publically
4) It requires PROFESSIONAL artists. What the hell do you think you are going to do? I mean comeon you need a large team. Infact, FA:T will be much harder then creating a TC for games like Q3A.
5) It just can't be done.
6) Partial Conversions are only supported.

There are many other reasons that I can't think of right now.

Also when you say "ME" it makes you look stupid. I am currently working on a complete campaign that will be ready for for release about 2 weeks or a month after the release of the Editors. It has 25 missions and 5 special encounters. Also I have already finished some speech files (Using my team of Voice Actors who work on HL and UT Projects) which will be all complete within first month of release. If anyone is going to be the first to do something closest to a TC it will be me and my team (9 members total) who aren't exactly in it for fun just to be the first ones that do it.

All I can say is you are a complete newb who doesn't know anything about the FO:T engine or editablity.

Pick an original story too. I will have a site up soon of the PC (Partial Conversion) Campaign that should give you an idea of orignal storys.

Basically the story is about a bunch of raiders for hire (Mecenaries) who end up getting involed in something much more worst then they'd expected. Thing of it as you're working for Raiders instead of BOS, and the BOS are the enemys.

That's just the basic idea of the story. Anyway, good luck on your so called.....TC

Guess I'm also a "complete newb who doesn't know anything about the FO:T engine or editablity" :|

That was a post from 2001, from before the release of the editors if I read it right.

MicroForte were willing to release official sprite editors but were blocked by Interplay IIRC.

The MF ELUA does allow you to create new materials including artwork and animations, but it grants MF the copyright to those new materials.

Ahh I see, thanks for the info. But does not the Redviewer version you mentioned offer a way around the MicroForte copyright thing?

I'm not a lawyer so I can't help you there but why would you want to anyway? You can't make any profit from a mod for FOT, and given it's age it's unlikely that MF will want to do anything with your work.

How many of you still like Fallout Tactics ?

Hello to all

I have a question :How many people here still like fallout tactics ?

And want to make mods for this game ?
For those who will say that fallout tactics isnt a good game ,
i have to say that dont look it like rpg game but like action game with rpg characters.

Fallout tactics is not fallout 1 or fallout 2 it is a different game .
In compat is better than previous
fallout games , has better graphics and also keeps the dialoges
from the npc in pipboy menu.

Has better tools to create similar mission to original fallout tactics maps.
I dont see it very difficult to create a mod like the original game.
But i dont see a lot of people working to make a new mod.
The only completed mod is awaken from 2003.There is no activity last three years modding fallout tactics.
