We have previously posted on iPlans for an iFallout on the iPhone. Kotaku now interviews John Carmack on the subject of iQuake and such. Fallout gets mentioned at the end, although in massively inconclusive terms.<blockquote>In particular Carmack is interesting in getting parent company Bethesda interested in bringing some of their games over to the iPhone.

"I spent a bit of time talking to Todd Howard about the iPhone," he said. "We want to make something happen for those products as well."

An obvious choice would be Fallout, something that Carmack says has already had internal proof of concepts made. But nothing has yet officially happened with the game.

Carmack says that Howard, a big fan of the iPhone, is very supportive of the idea and that anything made based on Bethesda's games would likely be created as a joint project between id and Bethesda.</blockquote>Spotted through a site that made me wait to follow a hyperlink, so maybe I'll wait to credit them.

man it would be cool to play fallout 1 and 2 on something like a gameboy! I would play the games way more often and in soo many places it would be great! no more boring trips to boring spokane! Although it would probably mean no modding, unless it was on... a psp?

im all for it! the originals would be great on a handheld, and with a post fallout 3 fallout game made for a handheld, i imagine it wouldnt be as bad as Fallout 3 was *as far as fallout games go

Carmack says that Howard, a big fan of the iPhone...

Is "iPhone" a codeword for "money" now? Because I can't imagine anyone who takes themselves seriously as a game developer claiming to be a fan of re-working their high end products in such a way that they can run on a damn cell phone. Come up, Bethesda! The mad rush to support game consoles was bad enough, but we're moving solidly in to the realm of absurdity now. Bethesda, If you really wanna make games that run on iPhone, try Asteroids? I think the rights are available!

Reminds me of that.

The only Fallout I could imagine on a PDA or so would be a Fallout in the original style... just like that one fan made Fallout for mobiles.

John Carmack understands Fallout even less than Bethesda. He's the least suitable person to make Fallout-anything.

D'oh, ignore my news submission about this. For some reason, the front page didn't refresh for me this morning :E

Well, the mobile version of Doom looks like an old Doom game, so maybe the iPhone version of Fallout will also look... like an old Doom game.

The put every game and kitchen sink syndrome on the Iphone is rooted in visual brainwashing via a "They Live!" like paper asset.

Some people were overtaken by the brainwashing.

I believe that they took too long to take"In God We Trust" off the dollar. Some humans are without hope, having fallen prey to associating the dollar with a deity status and worshiped it as their Mammon of choice.

These people will turn their own mother into an iphone product if they think it can rake in that which they worship to provide them the commodity to monetize into relief of their penetration angst.

I'm partial to the Joker's monetary units bonfire. What you burn, the FED can print brand new.

As in They Live, I strongly suspect that Mr. Howard is actually a reptile hiding inside a human hologram.

Y'know, I think this will just be some Fallout 3 mini-port to the iPhone with an even worse storyline. There's no point of anyone getting their hopes up about this because it won't be Fallout 1 or 2 style, it will be Fallout 3 FPS style, and the fact that Bethesda is behind it should be enough to tell everyone that.

On the other hand, Fallout 1 and 2 on the Nintendo DS/iPhone could work because the PC Mouse would be easier to convert to the Touch Screen than to a PSP's control scheme.

supposedly there is way to mod pocket fallout for windows mobile to run the files for fo and fo2 but, think all the scripts have to be converted.

also i tough there was dos install for fallout 1 and since dosbox has port for psp...

the DS idea is freaking sweet

If we're talking Fallout 1&2 then no problem. If we're talking a Fallout 3 style game then I hardly see how that would work well. The big question about doom on the iPhone is does it play well? Point and click seems perfect for the iPhone while anything that requires a gamepad or the like seems like a bad fit.

Games developed for phones or other small hand-held devices are by design casual games, meaning that the storyline and plot, should there be one, would be irrelevant to the gameplay. That's because those games aren't used as an end by themselves, or actually meant to be used that way. Pick up and play, pretty much.

The more advanced phone games actually have savegames and persistent levels with more than just the score and mechanics, but a sort of non-linear progression to save too. Then again playing an RPG on a cellphone - my C702 and reading all the text wouldn't be just a bad design choice, it would be malevolence.

Then again, not being a spoiled rich kid or businessman I don't have an iPhone, so it might just be different on it.

Which, by the way, always struck me as stupid. Creating whole games and applications for one single model of a phone? Come on! That makes no sense!

well said. How can anyone get the idea it could be anything similar to Fallout 1/2 or even the old Fallout games on a phone.

Some missed all thefuss around the issues at the moment with the old Fallout games IPlay has released with a Fallout Trylogie? Bethesda sure will not release any old games of Fallout or even try anything that just looks anything similar to it. That for sure.

Though interesting is, if they do a Fallout 3 port well chance might be it could be "tourn based" even  I mean Doom on the cellphone and elder scrolls was tourn based no? Never played those things.

Don't know about Elder Scrolls but I bought Doom RPG on my mobile phone and yes, it was Turn-Based (also provided more of a story than Doom 1 or 2 on PC  ). We can only hope it will be the same with this iPhone Fallout. :)

Carmack did an "Doom RPG" for mobile phones yet.

i'm curious if he will make a "Fallout FPS" next on iphones too...
