So what do you think will happen?
Indians getting special rights from the US government?
US government sending in the troops (US cavalry) to put down Indian revolt?
US ignoring this completely?
Do you think Iran would be the first to recognize the the new country of Lakota Indians?

I think <s>Minbari warships</s> Canadian riding police will bail them out and later they'll move on <s>Earth</s> Washington.

This should be... interesting...

It's going to make great news in the next few weeks:

US CRUSHES FLEDGLING COUNTRY ON CHRISTMAS!

that'll be a riot with the international presses!

Their situation is not about seceding from anything. They are renouncing their treaties with the US. There's a difference.

I'm moving to Lakota Country.

The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free -- provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Means said.

And how are they going to pay for all this? Definitely not with taxes *major sarcasm*

You know, we should just let them do it. There really isn't a while hell of a lot there and within 5 years things will be so bad they'll vote to rejoin the union.

Really, I've seen half the native american "countries" this side of the rockies. Only one of them was in good shape and that one didn't continually fight the government. I doubt the east side is any better.

It isn't technically a secession, as theyu are currently not part of the Union. They are part of us by a treaty which they have the legal right to object to (its part of the treaty).

The FBI was involved with putting down indians in the Dakotas back in the 1970s I think. Maybe this means more of the same?

What can the government do against it if it is done peacefully, though? Are they going to arrest all of the people in the territory? They can't do that. They can't attack them if they don't start a riot or violent rebellion, either. So if ALL of them stop obeying the laws of the US on the exact same day, what can we do?

No they don't.

It is illegal to secede from the Union. It has been since the Civil War, and it doesn't matter if you're officially part of the union or not, secession is illegal.

You can't unilaterally cancel a treaty, either.

Ignoring and stop supporting them in any way, they'll be starved out within a year.
