Lets Build a new computer for Fallout 4

First time out of the vault
Well now that the Fallout 4 hardware specs are out i expect more than a few or us are
concerned about the possible need to upgrade our game playing computer.

in my case this in my TV room (where I prefer to play from the comfort of my couch...
and as I like to play all the wonderful mods that this community creates the PS4 and
Microsoft 1 options are not for me
my concern is the non upgradable motherboard graphics on my TV room computer
the minimum and recommend graphics of Fallout 4 are

  • Video: NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2GB / AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or equivalent
  • Video: NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB / AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent
the is my TV room computer: and as you can see it has IRIS MoBo graphics...
it plays Wasteland 2 DC just fine on high settings but I do have a now retired
full size computer case I could build a new computer in for TV room games.

I expect that as they do the development work with Nvida the selection of a
NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB or better graphics card is the starting point:
With a Intel Core i7 4790 3.6GHz or better Processor.
I am looking for MOBO recommendations And I hope to do this with
just buying a new mobo with upto date WiFi,
graphics card, 16 gb ram,and a 1 tera SSD and power supply

so Shopping lists for the above gratefully received its been about 10 years
since my last home assembled computer so I am not up to date.

Well that was quick I just had a Private Msg
but to open this up for discussion I will repost here:
(I guess some forks are shy about public posting)
suggesting that in addition to reusing my Case
keyboard & mouse and display I buy:

a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H Motherboard (about $160)
Intel i7-4790 (and good chip cooler ???) (about $350 and ??? $150 for a cooler)
Asus STRX GTX 980 for the graphics card (about $550)
750W Power supply (about $100)
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB SATA III SSD (about $350)[/FONT]
16 GB of DDR3 ram (about $90)

so it looks like this would cost about $ 1,750 reusing my old tower case
with its DVD Burner and some old Had rd drives for extra storage
If I wanted a new mid tower case it would add another $70 to $100...
Prices from a quick look at NewEgg and rounding up

And other suggestions? $1,500 to $2,000 is the range I am comfortable with.
 
Good Point on the 980. There is an Asus 970 open box on New egg right now for $300 saving $250 right there.

A 27 to 32 inch monitor is not really in the budget right now as well, so sticking with the 24 makes sense and even after 8 years it still looks great.
my plan is to install and try it on this Iris graphics machine on Tuesday but I don't have a lot of faith in motherboard graphics solutions that share ram i expect the iris has about 256meg of its own VRam at best.

I would advise you to go to the http://forums.anandtech.com/ forum before you start burning money. Ask around there, cpu and overclocking section has some really experienced people.

Ok, thanks, I will do that I am not going to shoo the moths off of my wallet until we have a bunch of real world reports here to go by.
with luck the ISIS graphics will let me see a bit of the start of the game
for me the way things look is a bit more important than frame rate so since i don't do twitch games any more ( getting slow in my old age i guess) that factor is no longer most important.

ISIS? You mean intel iris? If so, which one do you have? If you have the intel iris pro 5200, it should run it:



And seeing as you can actually play the witcher 3 on a iris pro 6200 (a slightly more powerful igpu) on minimum with 30 fps~, i'd say yours should be able to crack F4... unless bethesda really pooped on optimization.

EDIT:

It seems the only desktop cpu (they put it mostly into mobile procesors) that has iris pro, is the i7-5775C, the HD graphics on the other ones are at least twice as slow.

If you've got the money to spend, What about a case from Mountain Mods? They're awesome! They're modular and can be customized for the build you want.

Xeon E3 comes with one of those too.
I'm toying with idea of PC upgrade for a couple of years, with Xeon being hot candidate since my PC is running 24/7 nonstop. The bad thing is that there's not any game appealing enough to me so far. Well, next year perhaps! :smile:

"Yes, a Xeon or Opteron are much better than their desktop brothers. The reason is simple: they can use ECC RAM. According to Google research, 8% of the DIMMs in a server sees one correctable error per year. That is not a real issue in a desktop: you probably don't use your desktop 24 hours a day. And most of the time, your applications only use 30-50% of your RAM. In a virtualized server however you are probably using 80-90% of your RAM. And your server is probably running 24 hours a day, 7 days in a week. On top of that, a typical desktop has 3 DIMMs nowadays, while a servers has probably at least twice or more DIMMs.

So it is easy to see that soft errors pose a much higher risk to a virtualized server than to a typical desktop. Therefore, ECC RAM is a must. And a single socket Xeon or Opteron does not cost much more than a Core i7 or Phenom II CPU. Both can be bought for a few hundred dollars"

That's true, no need of ECC for gaming. I don't have STEAM account, so I don't play that much, ignoring modern action games completely. Right now The Age of Decadence is the most hardware demanding game I'm running for about half an hour per day. :smile:

I was thinking more of the price and stability. As I see it, the main advantage of i7 over Xeon is that it comes with unlocked multiplier, which makes it better choice if you're aiming at overclocking. I'll stick with default frequency though. As for the price, Xeon looks a little cheaper to me - for instance, E3 1230 v5 (without integrated graphics) comes with Skylake architecture, has 4 cores/8 threads, while being less power demanding in comparison with i7. (We'll see how next model coming out in Q4/2016 will look like, not going to upgrade this year.)

Crap, now i want to build a desktop too... I gave up my old one, because i'm more of a minimalist now, meaning laptops for me. Also, the lower the tdp, the better, so i'm patiently waiting for the skylake iris 540/550 ones. It seems they get close to a dedicated gf 940m (which is good enough for me) and have open source drivers in linux (unlike greedy nividia, with their binary blobs).

Now that i think about it, the Iris Pro Graphics 580 seems like a beast of a igpu, i wish there was more information on it....
