Little things you would add to New Vegas

:::SILUS:::

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
As the title says. tell me about little things you would add (not just change, ADD) to New Vegas to enhance/change the overall experience.

Here are some of mine:

-LEGION NEEDS CROSSBOWS. IT ABSOLUTELY 100% NEEDS CROSSBOWS. Crossbow is something that would fit so well in the Legion setting. Not too techologically advanced and easy to make in large quantities out of scratch in order to equip a huge army.

-Every settlement needs some kind of defense, be it a simple wall made out of concrete debris and some barbed wire, a moat with some stakes in it or an impenetrable underground facility ala Vault or some bunker. It's ridicilous to see towns like Goodsprings or Novac striving while completely exposed to absolutely everything. FFS, even Big Town had a couple of rovs of plank fence and a moat.

If the Legion can mint coins, they should not wear sports equipment. I'd have the Legion properly armoured.

Wasteland needs about 5x more empty space.

All stimpacks, food and water should be cut by 90%.

Ammo and weapons should be cut by 90%.

This. Somehow it's easier for them to find enough sporting equipment to armour a vast horde then to make their own armour. It was ok with Khans and their car tires, but c'mon, an entire nation's army clad in football gear?

I don't get why they all have machete's either. Surley if they're the ones forging them; they'd make a traditional Roman shortsword. (Gladius?)

Presumably because they found them in piles in the homes of manchildren and nerds and survival stores. And machetes are pretty awesome for hacking it through nature. And presumably there wasn't a huge influx of Kukris like we have today.

In no particular order, I would add or modify the following:

Lack of Dynamic Events

This is the big one. While NV does have a few situations that change based on the player's actions (Legion taking over Helios One), many of these reactions are just for show. I would've liked to see consequences that opened up additional quests.

Ammo Crafting

While it's possible to create crazy powerful forms of ammunition, it's a bit ridiculous that AP and HP ammo have to be purchased.

Lockpicking and Hacking

Should not be available while in combat. Despite the fact that I killed off their leadership and set their bunker to blow, the BoS was courteous enough to let me pick open the front door. I would allow it during a [CAUTION] phase, however.

Explosives

Way better than in FO3, but still not all that great. The biggest caveat with Explosive weapons is the inability to create ammo for the grenade rifles. While placed explosives can be crafted, they are either very weak (Demolition Charges) or require components that aren't easily available (Bottlecap Mine); a happy medium would have been great.

Lockpick

As it stands, this is the most boring skill in NV because, unlike Science, it only provides a single function and is only useful in certain increments. I would change Lockpick to Mechanisms, which would offer the following:

* The ability to salvage, construct and place various traps, such as caltrops, shrapnel caches, bear traps, etc. In addition, other skills could complement the trap-making process. For example, a modest investment in Energy Weapons or Science could create a minor tesla coil that shocks nearby foes before its battery is depleted; skill in Survival could produce a poisoned spike trap. Unlike placed explosives, more advanced traps would stop working after a certain time (based on the point investment in Mechanisms) or could be linked together via wires and/or set on a delay to trigger lots of effects at once.

* The ability to create real lockpicks for lockpicking. In my opinion, Morrowind had the right idea by utilizing varying "grades" of lockpicks, which made the process more robust. In NV, a locked object's difficulty would be checked versus the Courier's Lockpick skill level and the quality of tool s/he is using. Bobby pins would work fine on doors and locks constructed from minor materials, but military level doors would require advanced tools, such as electronic picks. Obviously, higher grade lockpicks would have enhanced durability.

tl;dr: Make events more dynamic, allow us to craft HP and AP ammo, no lockpicking/hacking while in combat, grant better Explosives recipes, enhance Lockpick so it's on par with Science.

-More Legion, preferably explaining things about their civilian lives, if there is such a thing. Deepen the faction. Introduce some relatable characters to them beyond Silus. Basically make it so I am not possessed by the obsessive desire to shoot everybody belonging to this obnoxious faction.

-More empty spaces, yet more people on the roads; besides wandering traders The Courier seems to be the only one to travel between settlements. Gamblers going to New Vegas, NCR patrolling the roads, simple travelers, more chance encounter off cities please.

-More passive lifeforms; I know you have to challenge the player, put action into the game, blah blah, but I hate that 90% of the world's animals want nothing more than to kill you, personally. I would have liked more non-agressive creatures (or, like Bighorners, passive unless you get really too close for confort). Radscorpions, bloatflies, Giant Ants, Mantises, basically anything that shouldn't eat human flesh should not attack them on sight.

-More glorious Strip. Seriously, New Vegas is one street with a few neon signs and one fountain. Broken up in three cells. It was a big letdown. Vegas is supposed to WOW you, not make you go ''oh look, some lights and boobies with Xs on them''.

-More Westside and Northside. The communites bordering Vegas itself were really overlooked; Westside in particular would have been nice to know more about. They don't even get their own endings, while Powder Gangers in some out-of-the-way Vault do.

@Ophiuchus That Mechanisms idea sounds nice.

Totally agree with Westside and Northside. Northside especially could've used a merchant or two, since Jules mentions traders often stop through the area. I'd love to spearhead a mod that enhances both areas, but sadly my GECK skills ain't too great.

More settlements that actually can serve a purpose. I really hate that there was only Goodsprings, Primm, Novac, and outer vegas outside of main factions.

After Yes Man's "more assertive" speech, the Courier is instantly taken to the Lucky 38's penthouse. Staring at the monolithic screen in awe, the Courier hears some chilling words:

"Hello, America! This is the voice of your president, John Henry--"

And then I kill myself. I assume the courier does as well.

Some great Ideas here.

Here is my number one:

Someone said they want more open areas. I agree! The 20 minute run from GoodSprings to NoVac will have you pass by at least 4 full blown settlements, killing the feeling of wandering a "wasteland." I say do away with the open sandbox altogether and spread the map across a fast travel map, and bring back random encounters and random encounter maps. The places you travel to could still be exactly the same, perhaps even more fleshed out because of less strain on the system. (Primm lags because of it's detailed sign, and having to draw all the wasteland around it) Also, survival could be used like outdoorsman was, higher skill allows you to place your party before encounters begin, food and water need to be provisioned before long trecks if your in hardcore.

Number 2:
I would like to see something done with companion commands. I'm not a big fan of companions not being able to take chems or drink a beer with me, and auto-healing after combat is lame. In an unmodded game it should be pretty easy to keep enough aid items for one human follower.

-An actual in-game economy, the more of a certain item the merchant carries, the less caps you would get for it, and vice versa. Thus to make real money, you would have to know what certain merchants haven't got, and have got.

-More detailed towns and places in general. Fair enough Goodsprings and that were alright, but places like Trade Post 118, and Grub n' Gulp could've been improved on, things such as beggars and stuff like that would be cool.

-No fast travel, maybe on the caravan travel routes, you could hitch a ride with a caravan for some caps, and it would take a certain amount of time to reach certain destinations. What would be nice, would be if their was alloted times certain caravans would take you. Sort of like an apocalypse bus service.

-To add to the above, maybe you could hire mercs to help you, for caps. They would help for a certain amount of time, before ditching you, or something along those lines.

I would have added about 5x as much music to the radio and put more rat pack/swing into the mix instead of twangy country tunes. I also probably would have switched Wayne Newton out with someone more personable and with a less irritating voice. They should have made Wayne Newton a character not a DJ. The actual DJ'ing itself could have used a lot more dialogue and there should have been more radio stations of variety, rather than a with a dj/without a dj selection.

I forgot one huge thing that's missing, VEHICLES.

There are thousands of nuclear powered cars, bikes, trucks laying all around the Mojave yet a sophisticated, close-to-modern-day equipped army apparently travels on foot or rides the freakin brahmin or whatever.

Khans MUST ride bikes. A nomadic tribe made after another ancient nomadic tribe that was mostly famous for it's riders MUST ride bikes. Imagine a post-apo Golden Horde, clad in brahmin leather armor, riding their metal stallions across the wastes. It would fit so perfectly in the Khan lore/mythos. I can't understand why it wasn't implemented til now. The Great Khans=dusty, rusting choppers accessorized with the heads of their enemies.

Legion needs the chariot vehicles that were supposed to be in Van Buren.

In short, you want another Three Dawg.

Oh god, I can imagine now:

Me: Oh, Good Guy Radio News, that's new. *Turns on Radio*

Radio: Hey, it's me, Three Dooooog, and i'm here for you

Me: *Pulls out gun*

Radio: More new about that boy from the vault, I love him so much, all I do when I see him is compliment, nothing else!

Me: *Cocks gun*

Radio: After all, we fight the good fight...[INT 7] with our voices and mind.

Gun: *BLAM*

Me: *THUMP*

Easy Pete: Oh my...

RDR had a good fast travel system, where you could pay and take stagecoaches from town to town and and if you set a a way point off the main roads they stop where your paths diverged and let you off. You could skip the travel time or just ride along in real time. Of course you never did this because riding a horse was satisfying and while most of the random encounters got old before long they could be safely ignored or used as a quick source of ammo and cash.

It also had a wonderful, desolate world with towns scattered far apart. With some serious tweaks and edits the version of Euphoria could make a pretty awesome world for fallout, though the only thing it really doesn't have built in is RPG mechanics, but I don't imagine it would be too hard to add.

I want a DJ that doesn't sound like he has a rock tumbler stuck in his throat. I also want one that actively talks about what you're doing in the wastes, rather than a few tidbits here and there. And someone who talks to you, rather than at you.

I'd also love another radio drama along the lines of Herbert Daring Dashwood.
