At the end of the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary in Tokyo, Hideo Kojima and Konami demonstrated the capabilities of their new Fox Engine… With a twenty minute gameplay demonstration from Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, the next title in the critically acclaimed series. The demonstration was done on a current-gen PC, impressing attendees. As the game has also been stated to run on Xbox 360 and PS3, this can be the first title since Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty to appear on PCs.

The demonstration showed how the proprietary engine can handle weather effects like rain, clothing textures and lighting, while simultaneously giving a glimpse at the planned gameplay. Apart from sneaking, which has long become a staple of the series, it is also going to include vehicle driving and ability to call in reinforcements. The entire idea behind the game was summarized as a “Game without Game Over,” indicating that being discovered will not mean Big Boss’ end is at hand.

Why Big Boss? Around the time Ground Zeroes was demonstrated at the 25th Anniversary, Konami updated the Anniversary site with a link to a subpage, with a horizontally flipped teaser image depicting him in a new sneaking suit, with a silenced assault rifle and night vision goggles. His identity is obvious upon aligning the render correctly, as upon closer inspection, one can notice the unique Militares Sans Frontieres insignia on his arm, as well as the eyepatch over his right eye under the goggles. Flipping the image also makes the FOX insignia in the upper left corner and the tag line From FOX, two phantoms were born readable, most likely hinting at the plot of Ground Zeroes.

I used to be indifferent about the MGS series, but after playing MGS4... Damn, I'm actually looking forward to this. I also need to save up to get me a PSP and Peace Walker.

For me it's the opposite. I used to love MGS but after MGS4 I'm not interested anymore. :|

I have followed the series up to Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker on the PSP. I have Metal Gear Solid 4 but I am terrified of playing it after I saw how godawful and ridiculous some of the writing was.

Also, half a cutscene of half an hour? As if its not annoying enough to have a cutscene each few scenes during the game.
Its basically become an absurd war movie that tries to be dramatic, psychological and 'deep' interrupted by segments of gameplay.

I still shudder when I think about Rose and the 'empty room' codex conversations in Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty.
It kept going on and on and on and at some point I was ready to scream "What's the fucking deal with the empty room and what day it is you dumb bitch! I am on a rig on the Hudson river with terrorists who are holding people hostage and threaten to contaminate the river with toxins."

I later played some of the older Metal Gear games and discovered I enjoyed games like Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake and Metal Gear Ghost Babel much more.
They have entertaining stories but don't fill half the game with these, allowing you to actually play the game.

So I guess we get more of Big Boss' fall from grace' in this game.
Should have expected that one, Portable Ops and Peace Walker wasn't just enough.

The people with a boner for Big Boss will rejoice.

Same here. It was the first one that bored me but it still had some great segments.

Didn't they release it on PS3?

If you liked the story of the first three games don't play MGS4. It's a mess of terrible retcons and poor explanations for all the mysteries of the saga, with a plot that even on its own is really nothing to write home about. :|

The trailer looks insane. I wonder how it will look on an actual PS3

I think we discussed this before, but I still disagree. MGS4 did have incredibly long cutscenes, but to me the gameplay was worth it, and I didn't really have any huge issues with the story - I liked it better than MGS 2. You can always skip the cutscenes if need be, right? It did feel.... monotonous at times, there is no denying that. I bought a PS3 just for MGS4 Dutch, if that means anything at all. I recommend giving it another shot at least. I do hope they remedy the cutscene issue this time around. The K-man needs to make movies if he wants to bombard us with all kinds of shit.

Honestly MGS4 is probably my second favorite in the series, so it hurts a little when I hear it talked about so poorly. :P

As the final chapter in the Metal Gear series it falls short, but that really isn't the case anymore is it? I also enjoyed the supplementary material that it offered, which I hardly even scratched the surface of with countless hours of play time. To me MGS has always had a convoluted plot line that doesn't totally make sense but seems to jive alright when viewed as a whole. All the questions aren't answered at the very end, but it leaves room for future sequels to address. Anything to shed more light on Big Boss is welcomed in my eyes, because I could care less about Raiden's action spin off.

My advice: Give it another shot, just to be sure. The writing wasn't any worse to me - It actually felt similar to the others in that respect. I urge you to try to at least finish it Dutch. Then judge for yourself.

As for MGS: Ground Zeroes...

:aiee: :obsessed: :D

I don't like how MGS3 has mostly linear level design. MGS4 starts off the same way, but gets more interesting after the first act and actually has quite varied gameplay. MGS2 and MG2 SS are the best for me (I prefer the feeling of being in an actual place, rather than being pushed along a corridor).

I really enjoyed the mgs series (i've only played MGS solid snake, Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater, and Guns of the Patriots--all the main ones). I think 4 was the best of them all; it had a very cinematic feel to it.

it was criticized by many for all the cgi scenes, people saying there were too many, but I thought it added emotion to the game, and really helped one get emotionally attached to the characters and the story.

I love Raidens story too, though Solid Snakes is most gripping, next to that of Big Boss; I cried at the end of MGS3 when he's standing there, saluting the grave of The Boss...just typing about it sends chills down my spine. IMO the people that wrote the MGS story did a superb job, and those that brought it to life in the game should be given a medal!!!

Question for everyone that's played MGS3 and 4

[spoiler:506abc4d1a]Is the guy with the distorted face Zero?[/spoiler:506abc4d1a]

[spoiler:506abc4d1a]Can't be, at the end of MGS 4, Zero has no damage to his face.[/spoiler:506abc4d1a]

It has to be something related to either Portable Ops or Peace Walker, seeing as how this is set just prior to the establishment of Outer Heaven.

My problem isn't with the cutscene lenght (that come with the territory with MGS :P ) or the gameplay (even though after the second act there's less pure stealth...) but with the content of the story. MGS always had convoluted plots and ridicolous/quirky parts but at least it was mostly consistent. MGS4 wasn't, and for the final chapter that's inexcusable (see Ultima 9, even though things aren't that tragic in this case). :|

MGS4 is still the last story of Solid Snake at the moment, chronogically. There's Metal Gear Rising that takes place ten years later but I don't know how much connected it will be.

Huh? I was pretty sure that Rising was showing the events of Raiden getting his techno-ninja body and how he aided in rescuing Sunny and all that?

Also Tag, you don't need a PSP anymore, Peace Walker is in the HD collection for PS3/360 now.

That was the original plan, but I guess people wanted some sort of sequel, so it's going to be post-MGS4. I assume it will cover his transformation as well.

Can't wait. Been a huge MGS fan since MGS1 and I've loved every entry into the series.

Can't wait!

Plans changed when Kojima's B Team couldn't make a proper design for a stealth game with the "slice everything" mechanic in mind. When Kojima asked Platinum Games to take over (changing the game into straight action) they decided to place the game after MGS4 to give them more freedom.

Yea, it wasn't the length of the cutscenes in MGS4; more like the content. Up to MGS3, the series ran with its' over-the-topness (:|) and kept things fun. MGS4 got a lot more serious and "mature" and that put the ridiculousness in an entirely new light, making it stand out like a hardon in tights.

For example, I used to think that Kojima's tendency to randomly unload a shit ton of random information was funny and part of the charm but in the somber MGS4, it just seemed like he sucked at storytelling. There were also very few fun enemies and stealth took a backseat way too often.

I started to find MGS annoying with MGS3. Too long cutscenes, not enough gameplay. If 80% of the whole gaming time is watching cutscenes, then something is very wrong, imo. Don't get me wrong, MGS1 and MGS2 had long cutscenes too, but at this point I didn't really noticed this yet. Nowadays I can't play these games anymore without skipping at least all codex talks... it is just too much and too boring, full with pseudo-philosophy and soldier romantic and stuff like that. Ehw...
