I liked Crichton's books, so it's sad to see him go.

Personally, I was never really into his heavier sci-fi books. I liked The Rising Sun, Disclosure, and probably Sphere.

Crichton's books are not consider a sci-fi work, rather, more like sci-fi thriller.
I was shocked after reading Jurassic Park and its sequel The Lost World. IMO, the books are better than the movies and I hate how Steven Spielberg 'romanticize' the movie.
