Modding the steam version.

MorbidMind

First time out of the vault
I grabbed the steam version for this, and noticed that my data folder is largely comprised of .bsa files instead of the normal folder extensions. Did I get fucked over if I want to mod my game? Or is there a way to do it still?

Good news! There are supposed to be a bunch of .BSAs and one .esm. From the sound of it, the Steam version may be compatible with mods produced by owners of the regular version.

i don't see how it wouldn't be, steam isn't like other crappy digital delivery systems *cough* D2D *cough* and as such doesn't have it's own specific exe or some such.

I think I may have introduced my concern improperly. What I mean is, inside the data folder for instance, instead of separate folders for each category (Mesh's for instance) It has a mesh.bsa thats about 70 megs. I don't know how to open up this .bsa into their individual folders, so I can't edit things within it.

Sounds to me like the same structure of the normal off the shelf structure.

Post a screenshot of the data directory.

The standard folder layout has three folders inside of data, and the .bsa files contain most of the game data such as sound, meshes, and textures. You should try to apply a mod that alters a texture so that you can visualize how to make mods of the files in these archives. Also, there is a tool that allows you to view and selectively extract from the .bsa format, it is hosted at fallout 3 nexus.

Do not worry, it is the normal structure, and mods should work in Steam as in retail. (at least any mods that we can make now, when scripts are made possible it may become a problem)
