Movies that don't suck

Karel

Still Mildly Glowing
I have a simple, yet challenging question - have you seen any good films recently?

I must spend relatively long amounts of time riding (?) an exercise bike (knee surgery :( ), which is mind numbing, unless you have something else to do. Unfortunately, there seem to be only a very limited amount of good (or at least interesting) films and searching for new ones is very, very hard. Just read imdb.com toplists - they mix good stuff (like e.g. Apocalypse now, 2001: Space Odyssey, etc.) with Gladiator, LOTR movies and other, ehm, Fallout 3 - like movies (in a good and bad meaning, I'm sure they are safe an investment).

Iron-fucking-man, dude.

Also, what genres in particular are of interest to you?

Anything bearable (although movies about drug addicts / war movies seem to work the best  ) and new (last two years, I guess I've seen most older things).

War movies aren't exactly my forté, but I can recommend A Scanner Darkly as a good movie about drug addicts.

And Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas of course.

"Trainspotting" is the best movie if you want to see what a piece of shit looks like.

a short-list of some all-time favorites:

8 1/2
The 7 Samurai
Brazil
Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
The Seventh Seal
Blue Velvet
2001: Space Odyssey
Vertigo
Stalker (the Tarkovsky film)

newer films (that are NOT No Country
T.W.B.B. assuming everybody has seen them):

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
King of Kong
Eastern Promises
Zodiac
Hot Fuzz
The Orphanage
Persepolis
Teeth

This film still creeps me the fuck out.

Anyway, you request is way too general, Karel. There's all sorts of good films with more or less popularity.

I mean, Army in the Shadows (L'Armée des ombres) is a really great films, but I wouldn't know if you like WW II bleak resistance films. The Long Good Friday is a fantastic film but I don't know if you like gangster films with incomprehensibly chattering Brits (and not the Guy Ritchie shit, Long Good Friday is king).

So narrow it down a bit, willya

Brazil
Blue Velvet
2001: Space Odyssey
Hot Fuzz

Can recommend those as well, especially Hot Fuzz if you're looking for pure entertainment. :D

2001, Blue Velvet and Brazil if you're in the mood for something heavier.

Dunno anything new and good (not anything you wouldn't probably see yourself yet), so imma drop a few oldies if you don't mind.

War movies:

Apocalypse Now!
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
The Thin Red Line
Stalag 17

All classics and well known, but perhaps you missed at least one? :/

Dunno any drug-related movies, to be honest, gonna go ahead and list some randoms:

City of God (actually, this is drug related, i suppose :O)
Body Double
Impostor
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Bad Lieutenant (drug related as well :d)
True Romance
Road to Perdition
Hard Eight
Small Time (another drug related move, huh)
The Shining
Jacob's Ladder
The Devil's Advocate

Top 5:

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (full frontal nudity)
Babel (full frontal)
Lost in Translation (a little nudity)
Pans Labyrinth (no nudity)
Look both ways (may be a little nudity)

The Orphanage

I watched it lately and frankly, I mostly laughed my ass off (people in the cinema hated me, popcorns were thrown). It is sooooo boring and uninnovative that I barely understand why someone bothered to make it.

We have the standard heroine mother with fake boobs, driven by her maternal instinct to save her child (you'll never guess! he got ABDUCTED. By ghost children no less), we have creepy kids wearing freaky masks and an old house with a terrible secret. Oh, and of course the housband and the police absolutly don't believe in nothing supernatural that's hapening in the house, so the superhero mother must resolve everything herself.

Honestly, if you want a good spanish horror watch Espinalo del Diablo (or something like that, translates to Devil's Spine). It's also about a haunted orphanage, but much better IMO.

Indy Jones 4 S-U-C-K-E-D.

Sunshine was the best movie I've seen in theaters for a while now (sci-fi flick)

I also recommend Lost in Translation...one of my favorites.

it's called "The Devil's Backbone" and it's a film by Guillermo Del Toro.

as for the rest of your post, let's just say when somebody says "it's so ______" (insert pretentious armchair critique here) instead of "i thought it was so ______" i immediately stop listening. especially when somebody is so "uninnovative" to use a word that doesn't exist instead of coming up with a fitting antonym for "innovative".

Movies I've (re)watched recently that were good that are new...

Iron Man
Green Street Hooligans
Lord of War
Cemetary Man

Well Twinkie, trying to be mean with that uninnovative? Is it reeealy so relevant to my post? I admit I didn't check the dictionary for that word, but hell, I won't do it every goddamn time with every goddamn word. And you know what? I don't have to. People do make mistakes from time to time and clinging to such *meaningless* stuff only proves that you solely intend to troll.

And THe Orphanage *does* suck, it just ripps off from other movies like The Ring, The Devil's Backbone (happy?) and couple of others horrors\thrillers. Although the ending was pretty surprising, it doesn't make sense, because you would have to explain how the kid teleported through a sealed door without a handle.

And above all, the main actress had fake boobs IMO.

do you understand what "trolling" is? trolling is coming into a thread with utter off-topic bullshit like the quoted statement and your previous post. you highlighted a movie i recommended and decided that for whatever juvenile reason you landed on, that your personal take on the movie is what determines it's worth. i'd ask you, for the sake of the thread, to GTFO and stay out if you cannot intelligently or intelligibly contribute to the original point of this thread. the OP asked for suggestions, not what "ravager69" thinks about a movie TwinkieGorilla suggested.

and aside from all that, i'd have to put my faith in at least a few of the people who made up this figure: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/orfanato/ before allowing "ravager69" (the kid who "ttlly gets lesbians) tell me what is good and *does* suck. sorry, kid.
