Need Help with Character

First time out of the vault
i've just recently started playing fallout 2 and god damn if i could i would kick myself in the nuts for missing this gem of an RPG. Anyway im having trouble with my character my character is level 19 i have marcus and cassidy with me but i find that in this stage of the game my character seems very very weak.
i've got my ass kicked by ONE enclave trooper, i cant get past the second level of the military base and all those robots in the sierra depot are damn annoying. I can only ever do no more that 20 Damage but i mostly end up doing 6,7 damage thats if i don't miss for the 239030802938 time but i get up to 50+ critical damage if i aim at the eyes at very close range. It makes me feel like i wimp when i have rely on marcus and his minigun to save my life.
My stats so far are
ST:8
PE:7
EN:6
CH:6
IN:6
AG:10
LK:8
And i have the finesse and gifted traits an have 125% in small guns
What am i doing wrong how can i improve my character. Thanks.

Well, for one it depends on the kind of weapon you are using. If you are still packing Assault rifles or hunting rifles, etc. etc. I'd suggets getting different gear.

THE equipment to have when facing Enclave troopers would be the Gauss rifle. You can usually buy one of those in San Fransisco. It uses the Small Guns Trade.

Alternatively, if you have also invested in Energy Weapons, get the EMP pulse rifle. This can also be obtained in San Fran, but via a quest. I won't tell more, because that would spoil it for you :p

Better guns? Armour? Some stimpacks handy.
What guns and armours are you using? and at what difficulty is the game?
And how many points have you put on say small guns/big guns skill?

Armour: Enclave Combat Armour AC is 45
Weapon: Is now a Pancor Jackhammer was SMG before
10 Super Stims, 25 Stims.
Difficulty is Normal
125% and i dont think i have put any points into energy weapons or big guns i think they arel at 10%.
Ive got the Guass Rifle for cassidy and as ive heard he wiped the floor with any he came into contact with but where can i find the ammo for it ive searched everywhere.

The ammo for the Gauss weapons is one of the rarest in the game, the only place that stock it are the two stores in San Fran, and the midget in NCR.
The only enemies that have it are the Enclave troopers, but they only have a gauss pistol (as one of the weapon choices, there are 3 or 4 other weapons that they can have) which has a low ammo capacity (less than 10) and they never carry any reloads (which is rather stupid).

My advice would be:
A - Put more Skill points into SG, 125 is pitiful, and use aimed shots to the eyes
B - Don't use a burst weapon on them, the only burst weapons worth using on armoured foes are the Big Guns (Bozar, Mini-Guns, Etc), and even then it's fairly pointless.
C - Get the Extra Tag perk, ad put some skill points into EW.

As for Cassidy, if you've no 2mm EC for the gauss rifle, give him a sniper rifle. Marcus works quite well with a Pulse rifle, which is much more effective against the Enclave and has the added bonus that he won't burst fire you in the back.

Thanks for the tips but i need a way to gain decent amounts of XP i get my ass kicked around San Fran and Navarro and the XP else is pitiful. Oh and what is the level cap for Fallout 2?.

finally found some guass rifle ammo and using your tips i have taken out half of navarro. After taking out Level 1 of navarro i cant run anymore i double click and the character jerks a bit then starts walking. How can i fix this?

Ah yes... But how much ammo?

And: try to use 'always run' in the preferences menu.

You also may be coming down off of some sort of drugs. Did you use some buffout to help win the fight? This also happens with jet I think.

Nevermind i reloaded an old saved game and have now finished the game at level 26 lost both marcus and cassidy to that damn horrigan!, well at least now i can start the original Fallout. By the way are the level caps for both games?.

There are none.

So in Fallout 1 reaching level 21 makes your character almost unbeatable?

[Edit] argh! where can i find some Rad-X no one seems to sell them!

Nope, just means you can't get any better. You may well be pretty unbeatable by then anyway, assuming you've built your character even remotely well.

Well i finished Fallout 1 in just 2 days? Is there something wrong here? I wondered about the towns doing as many quests as i could find, i beat the master using the holodisk and finished the game at level 16 with Power Armour. Did i miss anything?

Nah, Fallout is much shorter than Fallout 2. It would have been longer if you played FO first, because you would have to get used to the game, first. Good job
